Dies Irae runs on extremely symbolic storytelling, so without the unspoken asides that pick apart everything you're seeing, you lose almost everything about the story except its aesthetic. The only thing that the manga has over the anime is that it can achieve a slower and more thoughtful pace, so internal monologues are easier to fit in. Nowhere near to the extent of the VN though: in neither the manga nor anime do you ever get a real sense of Reinhard's gravity or Mercurius's wrongness. The substance falls away and all that's left is half of the spectacle where you can't even really comprehend just how fast Ren is. DI fails in any medium other than a VN, just because it can't stop you in your tracks to talk to you about Nietzschian ideals and other pretentious stuff to contextualise itself. It needs this much text to convey the sheer ass-shattering power of its own intellectual masturbation, because it's not DI if it's not breaking its own arm to pat itself on the back for how smart it is. tl;dr: the story doesn't work if it's not denser than a goddamn black hole, so cutting down on text always makes it worse no matter what.
