Cayde Accepted and became an Exo, and started keeping a Journal to remember who he was, where he's been and so on because what he was doing for Clovis Bray was classified and memory wipes on Exo's was common(shady) practice by CB. Cayde also recorded the collapse in his journal, one of the only accounts to survive. And This lore is just the tip, Go watch MyNameIsByf or Myelin games for a better recap of Cayde
That part that makes his death impactful instead of bull I think is because he died due to his own overconfidence not because of some stupid plot device.

Every time I hear this song, it’s like it’s reminding me why I fight and why I should never stop fighting. Cayde was the reason I started playing Destiny. This song reminds me why I keep playing it. It's a story element, Bungie did it because they wanted something that would affect the players on a personal level, to tell the story of revenge look who you side with during the Forsaken campaign, Bungie knew Cayde was favoured and opted him to die so players would feel emotionally invested and immersed in the game And character development

It's a story element, Bungie did it because they wanted something that would affect the players on a personal level, to tell the story of revenge look who you side with during the Forsaken campaign, Bungie knew Cayde was favoured and opted him to die so players would feel emotionally invested and immersed in the game
