      Know how you feel pal ,I'm Scottish living in England and I would have been a Jacobite by bonnie prince Charlie's side and getting rid of Hanoverian pretenders to the throne,which should have stayed Stuart's.

    My mother with her seven children ready to board the bus to take her to the airport, going to a new world to meet up with her husband, and her family singing this to her. We were all given big hankies for that night time bus ride. I was confused why my mother, her parents and older siblings were crying. I was six, the eldest, 15. My mother cried in her new country from home sickness. She was well loved by her parents and brothers. This song always has me greetin'.

    We had a king, Sebastian the first of his name and the last on the line of his house. Was a brat that grew with stories of his ancestors prowess and aimed at a very young age to achieve the same glory as them. He was still a teen when he went to north africa, the nobles did not like the idea to move away with no prepared plan, as such that he disapeared amidst the tragic battle of Alcacer Quibir, without his fellows know if he was taken captive or if he died in battle. Yet the people still loved their king and needed him for the kingdom would loose its independence without him. And they hoped for his return amidst the days when the fog is at its thickest. Today people still hope that our king will return when our country is at the brink of extintion

    When the great golfer , Bobby Jones, crippled by syringomyelia and standing only with help and crutches, addressed the Royal and Ancient in St. Andrews in 1958, the gathered people spontaneously broke into this song, knowing he would never be able to return.

      @Arkybark 8 років тому +2

      +Cranston Cederlind Really? I never heard that before and I grew up in a family of Bobby Jones admirers. Probably they would not have picked up on that, though....

    • @jllpmusicman
      @jllpmusicman 6 років тому +4

      Yes, it was shown on a documentary on Bobby Jones . . . very moving. "He said near the end of his talk, 'I could take out of my life everything except my experiences at St. Andrews and I'd still have a rich, full life.' He left the stage and got into his electric golf cart. As he directed it down the center aisle to leave, the whole hall spontaneously burst into the old Scottish song, Will Ye No' Come Back Again? So honestly heartfelt was this reunion for Bobby Jones and the people of St. Andrews (and for everyone) that it was 10 minutes before many who attended were able to speak again with a tranquil voice."

      Not on the battlefield, but he did disguise himself as a lady in waiting to a Scottish noble-woman, as he was trying to rendezvous with a ship to escape. The noblewoman was brought to trial for aiding his escape but was spared by King George. Her name was Flora MacDonald.
