Backstory:
Stonepaw, the protagonist in "The Eternal Apprentice", is neglected and cast aside by not only his family, but the entirety of Emberclan. With Stonepaw's grandfather stepping down from his position as Warden of the clan, his kin would no longer be able to claim leadership - much to Lowflare's discontent, as he was supposed to be the next heir in line.
Lowflare desperately focused on regaining the family honor by any means necessary - and hoped to accomplish this by turning Stonepaw's brother into the true Warden successor, thus training him from a young age and leaving little to no room for Stonepaw himself as he posed no use for his family.
When Stonepaw was finally assigned Rockfall as his mentor, he became incredibly attached and savored the attention he was given. However following the events of the story, Stonepaw would constantly fail his warror trials on purpose to prolong his apprenticehood, so that Rockfall could continue to foster him.
But nothing lasts forever, and the clan eventually gave up on Stonepaw's future entirely - stripping him of his name and turning him into a Nameless who never gained the honor of bearing a warrior suffix.
With Rockfall being free, he was given a new apprentice: Flickerpaw, who had previously lost her old mentor in an incident that was involuntarily caused by Stone himself. This upset Stone, and driven by his jealous and fear of abandonment he lured Flickerpaw to a lake in the forest - ultimately ending her life and leaving her to rot among the waves.
The guilt gnawed at Stone, causing him to see the ghostly image of Flickerpaw around the territory - who has seemingly taken the form of a deer, the prey animal who fell victim to the wolves inside Stone's heart.
