  • After making a dismal error -- as I reported in my Great Loop Blog -- I found myself in Camden, NC (near Elizabeth City) needing to get down into the Virginia Cut to continue my travels north. After waiting four days for wind on Albemarle Sound to clear, I finally made my escape. This video is a conglomerate of clips I recorded during that trip using video from two GoPro cameras. Yes, I know it's a little long; I promise to make them shorter in the future.
    My goal is to make more videos about my Great Loop boating trip and other cool things I do. Support me by subscribing to this channel, liking this (and other videos), and commenting on this video to let me know what you like, don't like, or want to see.

    Thank you for bringing us along. This is one of the best Great Loop trip videos I've seen, mostly because you just show what you're doing and talk to us like we're there. I really felt like I was riding along with you, except I didn't get seasick in the chop.

      Thanks very much! That's the kind of motivation I need to keep making these. I'll see what I can put together from my trip to Chesapeake the following day.

    Just found your channel while looking for some kind of fuel budget for the loop. I'm retired military so my mind makes me research everything until my brain explodes. Looking for my loop boat now. I'll be soloing it like you but have a bit more experience on boats. I had a 40' sailboat for a while. Single-handed that too. I really like how you do your videos with the duel screens and in real time. Your description of events and things you are looking out for is great. Great presentation skills Maria. Will be following your channel for more info. If your boat has a midship cleat you can set it up like a spring line. Makes leaving and arriving much easier.

      Thanks so much. I know I haven't put anything out in a while but I'm on a Desolation Sound Cruise now and will be working on videos and blog posts all winter. Trying to enjoy the cruising now. Good luck finding your loop boat. Might I suggest a Ranger Tug R-29 or R-31? They are EXCELLENT single-handing boats.

    Well done video. We like that you show the actual time between events and not the usual time lapse stuff. We are heading south in our 53' trawler in Sept and like seeing the pace of things.

    Thank you so much! These videos are super helpful. I really appreciate your talking through what you are doing. Not just a pretty view but a narration of what you are doing how you are doing it and why. I found and subscribed to your channel recently and am going back and watching your loop videos from the beginning.

      I'm glad you find the videos helpful. I have so much footage I haven't edited yet; I suspect there will be lots of videos covering the earlier parts of my trip. For now, I'm trying to put out videos of my more recent travels. With the improved audio setup, I think they'll be a lot better.

    We are enjoying your videos, particularly this one. We just arrived home after finishing a Chesapeake loop south through Dismal Swamp, staying at Lambs Marina then over to Coinjock and back to our home dock just off the Chesapeake Bay on our Ranger Tug R-31 Shutter Speed II.

      Thanks very much. I'm working on a way to feed one of my nav displays to my iPad (via Active Captain) and capture it there for inclusion in the video as an inset. I think some viewers might find it interesting. I don't expect to get that up and running until September, though. I'll be cruising in Puget Sound and perhaps Desolation Sound then.

    So glad I found your channel! That boat is my dream! No one really shows the Ranger like you are so thank you for this! My goal is to have an R-29 CB or an R-31 CB within 5yrs. I have a plan and I’m working hard. Now I need to find patience! Thank you and stay safe! 🙏

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  4 місяці тому +1

      Working toward a plan is the best way. You can get some decent deals on used Ranger Tugs. The older models have the side door which would make solo ops easier. The newer ones have other nice features though; you really need to look at a bunch and see what features are best for you. I hope to see you one day out on the water!

      @@MariaLanger Couldn’t agree more! I do love that side door a lot. I’ll definitely be letting someone else eat the depreciation. Your boat is perfect. I LOVE the skylights above the helm area. Wish the R31 had those!

    Maria, As a former pilot (aircraft) I have always enjoyed your cherry drying videos! I've just discovered your Great Loop Videos. They are wonderful! I've always been interested in the Great Loop and the boats people use for it. Ranger Tugs are great. Watched a few videos on them and find them very interesting. It's great to see practical videos like yours. Best of luck and keep up the great work! Safe travels.

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  7 місяців тому +2

      I honestly believe the R29 (which I have) and the R31, which is the next larger model, are the absolute best loop boats for one or two people. Bigger boats are harder to handle, cost more to fuel, can't do the faster speeds when you want to, and can't get into shallow water or tight spaces. I'm hoping to share a lot more videos in the weeks to come. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

    Great fun, thanks for taking us along for the ride!! Mid Atlantic Christian University (aka MACU) docks are so convenient for access to shops & restaurants. Also, they're usually full. A stern in Rosborough just fits into their tiniest slip so I can usually get in and catch a break from weather or too many days on the water. Curtains help with stern-in privacy. [EDIT: PS, sorry about the Dismal lock snafu..]

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  7 місяців тому

      Unfortunately, my boat did not come with rear curtains. I do have two snap-on covers that'll close up the back windows. In a pinch, I could use them. But I do like to look out.

  • @johnjcoxiii9401

    The capacities of the Ranger Tug are probably small. How often do you have to take on Fuel and Water? How often do you have to pump out the black water holding tank?

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  Місяць тому

      Small but not crazy small. I carry 145 gallons of diesel; I can get more than 300 nautical miles on that if I need to. The blackwater tank is 40 gallons and I've never filled it; depending on where I stop for the night and how active I am on shore, I can get 3+ weeks of use before pumping out. (Remember; it's normally just me on board and I make a conscious effort to minimize head use when possible.) Water is 40 gallons (I think) and again, it depends on use. I know how to conserve when I have to. I can make that last about a week, but I also consistently top off the tank every time I'm at a marina. My propane tanks, which are small, last about a month each with regular use.

    I enjoyed your video. I am curious as to why rather than waiting on weather you didn't chose to go through the Dismal swamp Canal ?

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  3 місяці тому +1

      I think I might have covered that in a blog post or maybe the video narrative? The Dismal Swamp was closed for another week and I couldn't wait. Poor planning on my part.

    Annapolis-based R27 here. Thanks for taking us along. No trim tab use? BTW your AGL pennant is up-side-down, or so it looks.

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  6 місяців тому +1

      It was a pleasure! Thanks for taking the time to comment! I need more Trim Tab training or at least experimentation in water with no wind or current. I think that with the proper use I can "fix" my veer to port problem. As for my AGLCA burgee, I'm not a member so I fly it upside down on purpose. And there's a LONG story there.

    • @UrjunkMygold
      @UrjunkMygold 5 місяців тому

      I’ve got an R25 OB and the port side lean is quite noticeable and quite an effect on my little boat. All you need is a little experimenting when your moving in a big open area like that sound. Giving a little starboard bow down will counteract that port lean. Don’t know if your R29 tabs have the LED indicators (my R25 does not) so just go by feel. When you get back into a slow speed area where it doesn’t affect you as much you can pick the trim tab back up to reduce a little bit of drag.
      Just found your channel. Great vids. Great helm view instruction as you’re on your journey. Thanks for posting! 👍🏼😎

    Have you been in good enough weather to vlog from the command bridge?

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  4 місяці тому

      It's funny you should ask. The main problem with recording from the command bridge is the wind sound making my voice difficult to hear. I have a wireless microphone that I hooked up to my GoPro -- I bought it years ago for my helicopter video channel -- and I discovered earlier this week that it sends out a signal that makes my chartplotters unable to get a GPS signal! So I'm still trying to come up with a workaround for that.
      But yes, the weather was great last weekend and earlier this week; I did a lot of driving from the command bridge. Unfortunately, I can't drive from up there while going through locks because I can't reach the lock lines from the command bridge. I'm up in Lake Champlain now and will be dealing with locks as I come back down to the Erie Canal and then more of them in the Erie Canal in the coming weeks.

    Curious if you ever drop anchor in the ICW or the Sounds to spend the night, or do you stay in Marinas only?

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  3 місяці тому +1

      I definitely drop anchor as often as I can. One of these days, I'm going to do a write up or video about some of my favorite anchorages along the way.

    • @dougallen4675
      @dougallen4675 3 місяці тому

      @@MariaLanger Excellent. Thanks for the reply. I think it would be fun to anchor up and be somewhat self sufficient...cook dinner, breakfast, etc. On generator power and leave anchorage on your schedule.

    • @MariaLanger
      @MariaLanger  2 місяці тому +1

      It's great, especially with the perfect anchorage -- and there are plenty out there. But if you do it more than just occasionally, you should consider solar power and conserving electricity so you don't have to listen to (or depend on) a generator. I have no generator on board and only 160 watts of solar power, but my four house batteries can last three nights at anchor. The batteries are recharged in full when I cruise 3+ hours, so it's possible to anchor all the time if I just cruise from one anchorage to another every 2-3 days. Doubling my solar or adding a wind generator would keep me powered longer.
