Glad you liked it. This was the only Kawasaki Liquid Cooled engine i have ever worked on. What a smooth and quiet engine it is. One of the many i wanted to keep, but I can't keep them all The guy that bought it from me was encouraged to buy it by his dad. His dad loved that engine too. I got mine running real good but it sounds like The choke is on. I adjusted everything and it ran perfect. No problems then all the sudden it acted like it was running. Rich in smoking out the The exhaust like the choke is on
A couple thing are common.. . 1.. float level to high. 2.. and most likely... the needle and seat are not holding the fuel and the gas is overflowing into the engine. Check the oil level and make sure it is not over full. These engines do not like being overfull and has may be overfilling the oil level.
The throttle that is bolted to the side of the block on the left side that is bolted to the block that goes to the carb I believe it's the throttle lever. Do them have to be adjusted a certain way mine was off

can a water pump be changed on 285 with out taking the motor out
I have no idea. Sold this one long ago...

If you adjust it so that the choke works as it should, you should be good.
