I'm liking the video but wonder about a few things ... using want in the 3rd person, isn't 'hoshigatte imasu' used instead? And when the question used 'no desu ka', the response also used 'no desu'???
You can use it either way. Some things you won't learn in class, especially more phrases and vocubalary. But class helps you know the formal and informal speaking as well as business speaking.
Because of Japanese people's tounges, their tounges were difficult to pronounce English words directly. So it's a bit different when we have to say English words in Japanese
Hab vor ca einer Woche mit Japanisch angefangen und glaube dass das hier sehr förmliches Japanisch ist. "Watashi no namae wa John desu" würde kaum einer im normalen Alltag sagen behaupte ich jetzt einfach. "John desu" würde beinahe immer reichen denke ich. -> Vorausgesetzt man befindet sich nicht in einem Einstellungsgespräch z.B. weil dann wäre die sehr höfliche Form schon korrekter.

Why is the last name Smith different in Japanese? I would think John Smith would be John Smith in Japanese, why do they change it?
Because of Japanese people's tounges, their tounges were difficult to pronounce English words directly. So it's a bit different when we have to say English words in Japanese
good
