An introduction to using paint in your embroidery projects

- What are fabric paints? How do you use them? What are they like to stitch through? In this introduction I answer these questions and more; I demonstrate the paint, show you what you can use it for and then what it's like to embroider on!

Adding a commercially available fabric medium to acrylic paint turns them into fabric paints! And for a tint of color, using crayons (heat set) works great!
Sparkles make EVERYTHING more fun! 😂 If you ever need a very small brush, check out manicurist brushes (the ones they use for nail art) They are very inexpensive and very easy to use. Thank you for fueling our creative brains with so many fabulous ideas❣️

Thanks for showing us how you use these fabric paints. I've painted fabric with dyes, but not with textile paints, so it was great to learn how to use them together with embroidery. The bird design is really sweet, and I adore the sparkles! 🤩💖
For those who have a large supply of acrylic paints & cannot afford fabric paints;
Just invest in some textile medium it will tell you the ratio to use & it works well if you want to make up your own colours & not rely on a proprietary brand palette. 💯

I use inktense blocks with fabric medium to add to finished project like cloud, grass, hair, or light tinting etc..

Ooh I really enjoyed that thank you, and for the lovely bird design as well, what a brilliant way of taking some of the 'heavy lifting' out of working a design by painting it instead, and then you can just enjoy adding the embroidered bits over the top, can't wait to give it a go, and sorry Jonathan, but I can't help it with the glitter either, ever since Sarah got us using spangles that was me hooked too!!.

Watered-down acrylic works quite well and there are some additives you can add to acrylic paints to make them suitable for textile work.
You can add GAC but it still doesn’t have the same hand. If you use water you run the risk of it bleeding out. The water will seep beyond the area you want coloured and stain. You will have a halo when it dries.

I brought some fabric pens to try, like felt pens but for fabric and find them to be ok for the basics. I have wanted to try fabric paint and this video is really useful thank you so much ❤😊

This looks like a fun project and I absolutely love your sparkles; paint, beads, sequins and all! I am looking forward to the extra patterns and goodies on your Patreon feed. I did actually stitch onto an acrylic painting once, but it was a bit tricky. My plan was to paint a couple of donuts onto a paint canvas and stitch the sprinkles on with cotton embroidery floss. I had to pre-punch the stitch holes from the front with a needle to keep the damage to a minimum, but it came out ok. I will send you a photo, so you can check it out. I have also coloured on fabric with Derwent Inktense Pencils using Golden fabric medium. You can acheive a lovely watercolor or more intense look with these, which is also permanent after ironing, but the fabric paints look like they are easier to work with.

Thanks for another great video. And you really can't have enough sparkle and bling 😄 Have you ever tried the Dynaflow paints? I believe they're acrylics but perhaps thinner so they work much like dye on fabric without having to mix setting and other chemicals. You can paint with them in the same way as with watercolours, like doing wet on wet or on dry fabric too, much like you showed in the video. I bought some a while ago to try on linen for cross stitch, but haven't had a chance to try them. Take care, Arleen

I'll be getting myself some fabric paints as well, this clearly a level up for my embroidery projects.
You mentioned block printing. I carve linoleum stamps and use a brayer (roller) to ink them for prints. I've been looking for a way to print a strip of fabric with a repeating pattern to start stitching my own brodery anglaise. I need a non permanent ink that will fully wash out after embroidering, same as the pre-printed tablecloths you can buy in stores. They all have blue printing on it and it'll wash out. I'd hate to hand draw a couple meters of fabric with my patterns.
Does anyone know what I could use for ink/paint for this?

I’m trying to stitch on tee shirts. How can you stabilize the fabric to put it in a hoop without stretching. I tried a press on- wash away stabilizer but it’s hard to stitch through. A show about stitching on stretchy fabric would be wonderful
Sarah, this looks like fun! What do you do with the needle after you've stitched through the fabric AND the paint? My guess is that you throw it away...correct?
See my video all about needles, change them regularly anyway or if they are blunt, bent etc.
what color brand do you use? the gold and the blue color are just stunning 😊 so much patterns running through my head when i see those two colors 😅

I believe that you can. I’ve painted on fabrics for years.

Use watercolor paints too
Jacquard jar, Dylon jar- - type of paint
Brushes stiff paint brushes
Wet the fabric before you use the paint, dry and then hot iron
