OKAY! Now that you've made your own style of Kalua Pig, let's take take that Pork and add some Cabbage and Sweet White Onions to make another Hawaii favorite dish, Kalua Pig & Cabbage! Serve that over some steamed White Rice and got yourself some ONO KINE GRINDS! Aloha from a little homesick Island Gal in Arizona
Thanks for the recipe. I've always loved Kalua pork specially when I visit Hawaii. You've made the cooking process straightforward and easy to follow. I'll give it a try!
After watching this, I knew that I had to do this recipe as I was in the mood for Kalua pig. I had to find our pressure cooker first that we haven't used in 3 years. Luckily, I knew where it was at. We also had banana leaves on hand in the freezer. So we made this evening and it was so good. I love the crunch of the pork and broiling makes a difference. I love the fact that it took less than an hour to cook. Mahalo for sharing this with us!
I love liquid smoke, you can find it in any grocery store. It comes in many flavors. I have the hickory and the mesquite, also one with apple and something which is also great with pork. I also like it for salmon. I am going to make this just like all your amazing things you make, thanks so much for this one!
Yes, please!! When I heard Dude crunch the pork, it made up my mind! Simple, straightforward cooking and pork is really affordable! Win! Win! Win! TFS, Sharon🤗
When I started watching your videos, I thought that you were locals from Hawaii. I was born and raised there so was attracted to your dishes. I have had to learn to cook many of the local favorites that I could easily pick up from local eateries. I haven't lived in Hawaii for over 10 years, You learn to love a variety of foods growing up in Hawaii as it truly is the melting pot of the pacific. Thanks to you, I have learned to make so many more dishes that I ever thought I could make, especially the Chinese dishes. I can't find a decent Chinese restaurant around here. I do make the kalua pig in my slow cooker but can't find banana leaves. It really adds a special flavor.
Thank you, I have always wanted to go to Hawaii. At my age, videos will most like be the only way. And I enjoyed the ones you posted. This recipe looks so delicious!
This was the first time to Hawaii. I would say I am not a beach person, I don’t like the heat, I have no desire to swim in the ocean. I left thinking, what have I been waiting for all my life?! It was the best vacation I’ve had in a long time. I tried surfing, I snorkelled, I hung out on the beach and it was wonderful! I hope you will have a chance to go. 😊
In the winter I make faux pulled pork - put unseasoned pork loin in crock pot, cover with water and add 2 capfuls of liquid smoke - cook until tender. Pull and shred. So, so good.
I just re-watched your video. It's amazing how many cultures use banana leaves for cooking. I've never had Hawaiian roasted pig. I have had Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Mexican whole pig in a ground pit. My best friends Cuban style was the best. And I like Eastern North Carolina (ENC) vinegar based roasted pulled pork. It just depends who is doing the roasting for any style. Can't wait to try.
I made this last night, and ultimately decided to dial back the traditional saltiness by adding 1-2 Tbl of brown sugar. For me, it rounded out the flavor of the dish. I recommend this to anyone who, like me, is sensitive to salt.
Aloha Flo. Couple added tips. Ti leaves also work good. Worst case try spinach or cabbage. As for liquid smoke we start the fire in the pit with Kiawe so if you can get liquid mesquite it will be even more authentic. Yum!
Oh, and I meant to say that by wrapping/using the Banana Leaves in this style of Kalua Pig, you add the flavors of a REAL Hawaii-style-in -the-IMU kind of roast Pig. The traditional Kalua Pork in the under ground oven is surrounded with Banana and Ti Leaves, and a boat load of Hawaiian Sea Salt. Can't get Ti Leaves other than in the tropics, so just Banana will do.
You nailed it right on 😀😀😀😀😀😀…,,with the left over you can cook it with cabbage…Hawaii name it as Kailua cabbage…👍👍🤙🤙Dude….glad you enjoyed Hawaii favorite food….come back for more….
I could almost smell and taste that pork , must be delicious , gave me the idea of doing it with “ jerk seasoning “ here in Jamaica (home) , have a great day .
Love the combination of simplicity and taste. (Poor Dude has to taste-test everything. hehe) My youngest sister and I, her roommate, and her bestie, watch House of the Dragons on Sunday evenings. Since it comes on at 9:00pm Eastern Time (we're in Pacific), there's always a dinner nosh associated with our evenings together. When I'm feeling better and the weather is cooler, I'll drive a charcoal grill in the back yard. Last night, Julie decided to fix chicken quesadillas ("easy peasy!"). For most of us that was via a countertop induction stove; for Mom (she's 98!), caretaker Alma fixed dinner in a non-stick frying pan on the main kitchen's electric range with butter sautéing. Cheese melting out and crisping around the edges. Julie's guac was spectacular! To keep the kitchen work down (both Jules and I have back "issues"), she bought pre-cooked shredded chicken white meat. Drenched in guacamole, salsa, and sour creme (if you want), it was an easy and delightful pre-movie-night dinner. Don't forget to provide forks to layer guac (et alia) o'ertop the crisped quesadilla quarters (fingers won't do). I skipped the Crock-pot of Chili Con Queso, just 'cause. A raspberry-creamcycle was the perfect light desert (thanks, Jill).
I just came back from Maui and craving the kalua pork sandwich we had at Aunty Sandy’s. Sure they are known for their famous banana bread on the Road To Hana but their kalua pork sandwich really hit the spot too. Did some Googljng and found your video. Love the convenience and speed of the IP. I also brought back the red Hawaiian salt too. Do you know what’s the difference in flavor between the red and white Hawaiian salt? I also brought back some black lava salt too. Will get some frozen banana leaf from my local 99 Ranch market and liquid smoke today. Thanks for the easy recipe.
Using the broth to moisturize the pork at the end is icing on the cake, but I wonder if the charring is still crispy after that. Maybe you just have to avoid overdoing it.
Guess what I used your recipe and it was delicious I'll use it again because I found the liquid smoke. The grandchildren will love it. Thank you Flo and Dude🇦🇺
This is the easiest way I make kalua pork at home, I’ll get a whole pork butt with a decent amount of fat for the flavor and to keep the pork moist, rub the whole pork butt with liquid hickory or mesquite smoke then rub it with lots of sea salt or the Hawaiian sea salt with alae, black pepper and garlic powder, wrap it in heavy duty foil twice and put it in the slow cooker on low and cook until tender or it’s falling apart, I normally cook it in the slow cooker for about 4-6 hours or overnight.
The Indian people are way ahead of you. So what they do to replicate tandoor cooking is place a lump of charcoal in a small dish, say foil, set the coal alight, blowtorch is the only way, then pour a little fat over it and set the dish in the meat and cover with whatever you can it has to be a tight seal film wraps good.. The smoking usually takes 30-40 minutes and I'm telling you it's x10 better than liquid smoke!!!
You don’t need to buy cut up pork. I use pork butt , Hawaiian salt, liquid smoke rub it all over put in instapot with water half way up the pork butt cook. Shred pork. Another one would cook it with long rice and green onion
LOL I died when you said I'm not about digging a hole to smoke meat. bahahahah. can you tell me where you bought your liquid smoke in Vancouver? I live here too and never seen it before.
Taste is subjective, but perhaps you have not had authentic luau food, made at home in an imu. And I'm not talking about what you get atva tourist luau @Ryan-hw7ow
One of the best things we tasted in Hawaii and it’s so simple to make! Happy Sunday! 💕

Pork is an amazing meat. Even just roastedwith NO seasoning it's delicious! Can't wait to try this.
You can't beat the pig for maximum natural flavour
The banana leaves make a wonderful presentation. Thanks for this idea. Looks delish.
Awesome! We can just imagine the aromas while that is cooking. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Have a wonderful week. (like 856) 👍

I can't wait to try this. Looks like a great winter meal. When winter is just hanging on, turn on a Hawaiian meal!

You can also do this in a slow cooker, and with garlic!
Wouldn't you need much more liquid?
@@wm6549 yes put a little chicken stock, the meat gives off quite a bit of liquid though.
Yes, but don't add liquid. Just salt and liquid smoke. The slow cooker will make enough liquid. Use a slow cooker bag for easy cleanup.
Hawaiian BBQ been doing it down south for years, put it in a crock pot, same great flavor
Made this tonight, together with cabbage and white mushroom as some one suggested in comments - delicious!
Just made it and it turned out great!! So simple and tasty. I didn’t use banana leaves and it seemed to be okay.

To you add some water when you cook it in the crockpot? I have a crockpot but didn’t use it for a long time.
No water Jennifer. Just liquid smoke and Hawian salt

Thanks Flo ❤

Hi Flo, girl you know you made my day. PORK, PORK YES. LOL
If you can't find banana leaves, try some collard greens. It gives it a little bit of that green taste.
"What a difference, eh?"
Welcome back to Candanada from Hawaii! Hope that was a delightful trip, Flo and Dude.
Darn, but that looks tasty.

Soft taco shells with that pork yummy
Carnitas?
Delicious and yummy recipe 😋👍👍❤❤❤stay connected
Yum !!!
have you tried sous vide kalua pork? I don't have a pressure cooker
What brand is the liquid smoke
Could you season the pork and just stir-fry in a wok? Adding some garlic sounds good too.
You can try! But pork butt/shoulder is best slowly cooked for a long time or pressure cooked.
Using the broth to moisturize the pork at the end is icing on the cake, but I wonder if the charring is still crispy after that. Maybe you just have to avoid overdoing it.
Correct… just don’t overdo it. 😊
Sub. cabbage leaves? They go good w/pork.
I just love💘😻💜💛💚🧡sweet Hawaiian flavored fried pork, with a spicy kick! THAT LOOKS MIGHTY DELICIOUS!!!😋
this looks great!! it would be very good, done in a smoker, with the banana leaves too!
Hey Flo..? What are you using under the pork when you put it under the broiler? Looks like paper towels, but I can’t tell for sure 🤷♀️
Crumpled parchment papee😊
So maybe a slow cooker or bake in dutch oven if I don't have a pressure cooker
Don't add any liquid using a slow cooker and use a slow cooker bag. Would cook it in oven covered with foil instead of dutch oven.
@@keithfreitas2983 Thank you
Also great scrambled with eggs......mmmmmmm
Looks delicious. Can I use smokey paprika instead of liquid smoke?
Not sure it’ll give the same type of flavour but I bet it’ll still be good.
Won't give the smoky flavor. Totally different taste.
Guess what I used your recipe and it was delicious I'll use it again because I found the liquid smoke. The grandchildren will love it.

May I ask, where did you stay?
Where can I get liquid smoke?

I bought it from an independent store in town but you should be able to find it with the spices or barbecue sauce in a supermarket.
@@FloLum thank you so much for your reply.
Not knowing where you are from, a large chain super market or Amazon.
@@keithfreitas2983 thanks
How do you guys remain slim? I do it through bad cooking. I am in trouble after finding your channel.
Lol… moderation. We can’t eat this everyday!
What is boiler? Is it oven?
Broiler -very hot searing heat to crisp up pork usually uses top elements on yr oven 😊
What brand is the Liquid Smoke?
“Try Me”
@@FloLum Thank you! I'm going to try this recipe soon! So excited!
That looks amazing! Come on Flo you can send Dude outside to dig that pit in your yard. I want to see you cook a whole pig. 🤣
🤣
I don’t have a pressure cooker but I do have a crockpot. If I cook the pork in a crockpot do I need to add some water?
No water. Cooking in crackpot will make enough liquid.
Thank you Keith
In a slow cooker for how long Flo
8 hours slow. 4 for fast. Use a slow cooker bag and don't add any liquid. Makes enough liquid.
