  • Celebrating 50 years since its first mainline railtour on the 27th April 1974, Merchant Navy No.35028 'Clan Line' would retrace its steps of that tour.
Starting out from London Victoria, it would work its way to Wimbledon, where it join the LSWR mainline and run on the fast lines to Worting Junction.
We pick up the tour at Farnborough, as the Clan Line charges through on the reverse curves.
Next we catch the trip on the Salisbury - Westbury line at Bapton, as 28 speeds towards Warminster and Bath.
What happened next will become the stuff of legends, as we set up for the return at Upton Scudamore.
With 2½ miles of 1in70/75 we looking forward to Clan Line digging into the climb. We we didn't expect was the locomotive to throw off any notion of being a show pony, as we witnessed a Merchant Navy in full cry.
With over 500tons of train on the hook, Clan Line topped the bank at over 40mph, with the valves feathering. A true testament to the hard work, put in over the last few months to get the locomotive ready for the trip.
For one last shot, we headed to Andover.
With the area being heavily overgrown, I decided to go for a little snap shot of 28 roaring through, to the delight of many.
A very good day out for many and a welcome return to the mainline for 35028 Clan Line.

The Farnbourough shot is one of the best ever of a preserved steam engine. Outstanding. Congratulations.

Just like B.I.L clan line always seems to constantly threaten the 75mph limit they allowed to run at glad to see she back and well done on last shot superb

They both have pushed that limit, very difficult to hold them back 😂

@@04clemea I remember B.I.L doing it on a remembrance tour and at one point according to the description later acheive 83 mph at one point

35005 used to regularly push that limit too when she was on the mainline. MNs should be upgraded to 90MPH they’re more than capable.

You can't beat a bloody good steam engine clan line still doing the job she was built to do.

Was she stopped in Westbury Station before her ascent of the bank? When ever I was on support crew with 34016, 35005 or 73096 we were always stopped in platform 3 at Westbury, although no stop was scheduled. Once Bodmin topped the bank at 33mph from a standing start with, I think, 12 on.

It got a clear run through Westbury, topping the bank around 40mph

I think that's the loudest I've ever heard from a rebuilt Bulleid. - The boiler work seems to have done a pretty good job

@@04clemea It was a cold day and because of that the sound is more noticeable, if it was a warm summers day it would have sounded a lot quieter. Due to the cold day, it also gave wonderful atmospheric shots of the hot exhaust hitting the cold air for people behind their camera's of a steam locomotive in full cry. Clan Line was pulling about 520 tons at the draw bar. I was fortunate to be on that tour, very enjoyable. Good video.

I think that's the longest Class 158/159 combo I've ever seen at the beginning there - 10 coaches! 😁

All the negative comments re diesel "helpers" supposedly necessary....how come then that Clan Line seldom seems to need one. Even with a full load like this one.
Sooner those responsible admit it is almost always just insurance cover and little more.
    Heating, shunting, reversing needs?????

    • @04clemea
      @04clemea  7 днів тому

It's operational reasons. If they don't need a diesel, they won't use one.
This tour was a circular trip and had a generator coach, so a diesel wasn't needed.
A diesel was used on its last trip because of the fire risk and if its next tour to Weymouth runs, there will be a diesel on that tour. Used for part of the trip and help shunt at Weymouth.
Nobody needs to admin anything. If people were just more understanding of why they are used, there wouldn't be any comments about them.
