Holy shit, The Dagger of Amon Ra, I remember watching this game be played when I was a kid. I could never find it again, many google searches of 'Egyptian point and clicks' but I couldn't find it, but here it is - I remember that scene with the dead dude in the sarcophagus very vividly for some reason. Thanks for helping me remember that one!
Something cool to notice about BLOOD's cover: Look at the blood at the very bottom of the hand trickling down, now look at the ShareWare cover. The ShareWare blood is the blood trickling down the hand of the actual game. It kind of supports that symbolism, pretty cool!
The artwork for Transarctica was originally painted for the NWOBHM band Diamond Head for their compilation album "Am I Evil" Hence the title "Heavy Metal Hero".
As an aspiring game concept artist / illustrator I found this video incredibly interesting, inspiring, and cool. If you find any more in your collection I'd love to see this turn into a series. :)

Great selection. Those covers for Monkey Island and Another World are absolutely beautiful. That cover for Terrorpods reminds me of the artwork used on Fatal Rewind. I think it's the same robot used on both covers. Never played it, but I saw an ad for it in a Game Pro magazine back in 1991. To this day, it stands out as another one of my personal favorites.
The cartridge cover for Asteroids made me think the game looked like that. I was a LITTLE letdown and surprised when my Dad's old VCS became operational and I saw it in action. Anyway, that cover is awesome, and I would love to play an Asteroids game that looked like that.
You know, I'm 31 and I only ever played Doom and Doom 2 for the first time in my life last week? I expected to not have a good time, as I have very little experience with FPS's that old -- but it was quite the opposite. It was one of the best experiences, gaming wise, of my life. They just flat out don't make them like that anymore I guess! It really, really, really holds up! It really blew my mind. It has puzzles and not everything is corridors and shooting! Goes to show how things can be way more than they may seem. Next up that I haven't played: Duke Nukem 3D
If you enjoyed Doom and Doom 2 so much, apart form the previous recommendations above I think you'll dig Heretic. It uses the same engine as Doom, but is based on a fantasy setting and has a simple item system, not to mention looking up and down! But aiming is just the same as Doom and Doom 2 so looking up and down is purely optional.

I miss the boxes :( They look so much better and unboxing them always felt special. The dvd cases of today are just boring. Even walking trough a game store isn't special anymore. All looks pretty much the same. Way to plastic as well. But I'm probably just old. As kid i could stand for hours at the game section in the toystore. Just looking at boxes. With the lack of internet and not having a subscription to a game magazine i bought games mostly based on the box art. It's what drawn me in. Loved the one from Tribes. Had this huge box with awesome art. Sadly we had no internet at home at that time so i bought a game i wasn't able to play, but my god what a awesome box that was!
Yeah going to a computer / software store used to be magical. The people who worked there were actually normal humans even. Now wherever you go it's like walmart and nobody who works there even speaks English let alone knows anything about anything.
I agree with you that the old boxes looked better, but to be honest, I would not want to go back to the big boxes. As someone who don't have a very large apartment, I had to throw out plenty of big boxes due lack of space :( I've only been able to save the best and/or most valuable game boxes.
It Is not just you,I am 14 years old and I love Big boxes and walking through a videogamestore is just not as special as it used to be and even good games of today got the most boring Covers I have ever seen and I Miss handdrawn coverart,and I miss Games without Microtransactions.
Ever since I was able to buy my own games I've been a sucker for the box art. That was one of the reasons of BUYING it: just admiring the big box and the artwork on it, on the manual, sometimes designers even had eye for the inside of the box. When they moved away from big boxes in the early 2000s it felt .. 'meh'. I'm still a bit of a sucker for box art and other fancy artsie stuff that goes in it, but it has by far not the wow-factor as the old letter-sized boxes had.

You have an outstanding collection of games. I thought this was a great idea for a video and the idea of "Worst Box Art" could be pretty funny too. The Ultima and Myth games have some pretty cool box art and as a kid i used both to decorate the walls of my bedroom. In retrospect that was a bad idea because I wish i still had all those boxes but hindsight is 20/20 and it gives me something to hunt for these days.
Shoutout to Kings Quest 4, I loved looking at that box art when I was a kid. Doubly appreciate now how it presents Rosella as both a princess way out of her depth and a badass action girl without going too far in either direction.

Good call on the Out of This World box. That was an awesome piece. I remember the alternate art the most, simply because I seem to remember it being what was used for the SNES release.
Ultima VI features a holy warrior bathed in light, dressed head to toe in white armor, his foot pressed into the chest of a fallen demon who's screaming in rage. That’s great by itself, but it gets even better when you learn the context.
Don't know if anyone noticed this... But towards the end of the video, the song playing in the background comes from the OST of "Neotokyo" (Ed Harrison - Mechanism). I was very surprised to hear something like that in a video from this channel... That only made things more cool to watch! :D Awesome job like always!
My personal fave is the painting for the cover of STARFLIGHT 2. Back in the day my local computer store was selling posters of that cover art. Best $5.95 I spent that year (1989). I still have that poster on my wall today. The large format really allows you to see distant details not really visible on the box. Like in the middle background are some figures looking around with a flashlight or scanner. In the distant background there are some large vehicles, maybe construction or excavation machines. And perhaps best of all, up on the top hull of the ship itself, standing next to an obvious impact crater in the metal, some little figures checking and/or maybe repairing the damage. The number of 1 - 2 minute looks I've given that poster have to add up to a dozen hours over the years. Still fun games too. Thanks for all you do! Cheers!
Awesome Burgertime shirt. Huh, I always thought the Wasteland cover depicted 5 Rangers facing off against some random mutant or something. I never owned that many big boxes, sadly, but I always loved the cover art of most of Sierra's games. In particular King's Quest IV which we still have the big box for and has some beautifully painted and cinematic artwork.

I love box art for Grim Fandango. Really captures that film noir style, incorporates all of the really memorable characters from the game, and that Mexican architecture immediately solidifies the thematic elements of the game.
If I had to pick up a favorite, that would definitely be Ultima V's cover by Denis Loubet. The art is great, and it tells such a story that you feel like you're into the game already: the situation is desperate, three shadowy figures with red eyes are moving toward the hero, and behind him is a wounded comrade so he obviously can't flee. Just fantastic.
Fade to Black has a pretty neat box. I like the way the hero and the enemy are trying to ambush each other around the corner of the box! I still have my copy from 1995 :)
Riven, man, Riven was a great piece of art. I know you probably don't have the highest opinion on Myst itself, but I'd be absolutely enamoured if you talked about its incredible sequel, man that is a piece of art right there, perfection in graphics and atmosphere
My favorite PC box art is the one from DSI's stunts, I'm probably going to get my box and its contents framed when I find someone who can do that! Its simplistic, modern, and full of mystery. And the back of the box basically is outstanding because it has a note written to you, the driver from the company you are testing for
I think my favorite box art of all time was the original Everquest box art. Amazing panorama that had all the original races depicted in various action stances. My other favorites from my childhood that I used to just stare at for hours were the Atari 2600 game covers for Defender, Space Invaders, Berzerk and Missile Command.
I'm glad you at least mentioned DOOM 2, that art was done by Brom, who has done the art for several video game boxes, novel covers, and some Magic: The Gathering cards. I love his art. Overall, I'd say you locked in on a good collection, I enjoy all of the boxes you chose. And yes, heh heh, the alternate Another World box art is truly horrible.
One of my favorites that LGR didn't mention is the original Myst box art. The simple title, the strange looking island and colors just immediately got the message across to me that this involves exploring a beautiful myst-erious island and I begged my parents to get a new computer for years just so I could play it.
Nice selection! One of the best covers I recently discovered, which I'm definitely going to pick up a copy of the game solely for, is the Japanese version of "X-COM: UFO Defense" for the Playstation 1. Looks like a cross between HR Giger and late 80s Guyver. Speaking of which, I always quite liked the cover of "Darkseed" too!
I collect PS2 games and might want to start putting the games with the really cool box art in certain places. I am easy to please, though, so even the generic cover the first Yakluza had will please me. Now ICO's European cover that thankfully was used for the PS3 version is right beside me right now. Love Planescape Torment's cover simply because of the mood it uses. Planescape Torment is in the same pile. I always love how there's a demon essentially looking at the viewer in the Doom boxart. Almost like it's saying, "We're screwed up and you know you want this game!" My favorite game boxart has to be SMT Nocturne's along with the Greatest Hits version of the Sly Cooper 1 cover. The original for that game was great, but the Greatest Hits art had more going on and represented the game far better. I also am a huge fan of the series, so there's that. Sly 2's cover is where things got a bit generic and then they went back to Sly jumping around in the lesser game's box art, which would be Sly 3(I rate it lower for the lack of clue bottles). Sly Thieves in Time uses the Sly jumping thing and it still doesn't look as good as it does for the Greatest Hits version of Sly 1. Maybe I just was mad at myself for having the black label Sly Cooper 1 box I've had since childhood. Who knows? Kingdom Hearts always has great box art, but the first one had the best. It let you know this game had a serious tone, but also had Disney characters. It let you know what the mood was and that this game had giant keys being used as weapons. It was a great cover. The box art for Kingdom Hearts 2 is so-so. I so feel the second game itself was not as good to begin with, so that might be why I have a neutral opinion on the art. The PS1 Doom's box art is amazing and just as goofy looking. I keep the game for the art.

I really like the art for the original civilization box. It really communicates the message of building a civilization which exists in both the ancient and modern era.
King's Quest III for me -- that cover art and game story is a perfect metaphor for life. Also, anything Roger Dean or Rodney Mathews is great just because it's beautiful.
As a Laura Bow fan, I'm always drawn to the box art of "The Dagger of Amon Ra" when it comes to choosing an avatar, even though "The Colonel's Bequest" is my favorite game in the series. I think it's the giant bust of Amon Ra in the background that draws me in. It's gold/yellow, big, and bright.
Great choices. I would have added the box art for Monkey Island 2, also by Steve Purcell and looking just as awesome. By the way, I guess the other space marine on the Doom cover is there because of the whole multiplayer thing (which was kind of huge at the time) and he's the same color, I'm guessing because at the time when it was drawn, there was only one space marine sprite, as opposed to the 4 different variations you got in later versions. Nice video, by the way.
I think the European boxart for Daggerfall is even better. The American one is super neat, but without the holographic effect, you really get to see the details and lighting on the guys face...badass.
My two personal favorite cover arts are Gran Turismo 4 and The Bouncer. Not retro in terms of age, but they're still incredible...at least to me. Especially GT4. That was a work of art, even in it's remarkable simplicity.
I think Psygnosis are pretty much the king's of making just epic game box artwork (Amiga, ST and PC atleast). Gunship 2000 had a pretty neat artwork but I think you have coverd the reall nice ones pretty nice.
Best big box game art -- Sacrifice. Best packaging -- Baldurs Gate. Best manual -- Civilization II. Amiga honourable mention -- Populus 2. I don't miss the size of the boxes but I do kinda think that it's a lost medium. The bigger boxes give a bigger canvas that DVD/Blu-ray boxes simply lack.

I've always been a fan of the original Unreal Tournament box art. THAT TROPHY and the LOGO are just "Epic"
Shivers is one of my favorites, the art and the game were amazing to me at the time.
My personal fave is the painting for the cover of STARFLIGHT 2. Back in the day my local computer store was selling posters of that cover art. Best $5.95 I spent that year (1989). I still have that poster on my wall today. The large format really allows you to see distant details not really visible on the box. Like in the middle background are some figures looking around with a flashlight or scanner. In the distant background there are some large vehicles, maybe construction or excavation machines. And perhaps best of all, up on the top hull of the ship itself, standing next to an obvious impact crater in the metal, some little figures checking and/or maybe repairing the damage. The number of 1 - 2 minute looks I've given that poster have to add up to a dozen hours over the years. Still fun games too. Thanks for all you do! Cheers!

I never owned that many big boxes, sadly, but I always loved the cover art of most of Sierra's games. In particular King's Quest IV which we still have the big box for and has some beautifully painted and cinematic artwork.

Mega Man 1... haha. I actually bought that game as a kid despite the box art, just from the screenshots and I would say it was one of my best purchases to this day.

I love box art for Grim Fandango. Really captures that film noir style, incorporates all of the really memorable characters from the game, and that Mexican architecture immediately solidifies the thematic elements of the game.
Great video! My own favorites include Ultima V, The Bard's Tale, and Leather Goddesses of Phobos.

If I had to pick up a favorite, that would definitely be Ultima V's cover by Denis Loubet. The art is great, and it tells such a story that you feel like you're into the game already: the situation is desperate, three shadowy figures with red eyes are moving toward the hero, and behind him is a wounded comrade so he obviously can't flee. Just fantastic.

Fade to Black has a pretty neat box. I like the way the hero and the enemy are trying to ambush each other around the corner of the box! I still have my copy from 1995 :)
Riven, man, Riven was a great piece of art. I know you probably don't have the highest opinion on Myst itself, but I'd be absolutely enamoured if you talked about its incredible sequel, man that is a piece of art right there, perfection in graphics and atmosphere
My favorite PC box art is the one from DSI's stunts, I'm probably going to get my box and its contents framed when I find someone who can do that!
Its simplistic, modern, and full of mystery.
And the back of the box basically is outstanding because it has a note written to you, the driver from the company you are testing for

I think my favorite box art of all time was the original Everquest box art. Amazing panorama that had all the original races depicted in various action stances. My other favorites from my childhood that I used to just stare at for hours were the Atari 2600 game covers for Defender, Space Invaders, Berzerk and Missile Command.
I'm glad you at least mentioned DOOM 2, that art was done by Brom, who has done the art for several video game boxes, novel covers, and some Magic: The Gathering cards. I love his art.
Overall, I'd say you locked in on a good collection, I enjoy all of the boxes you chose. And yes, heh heh, the alternate Another World box art is truly horrible.
One of my favorites that LGR didn't mention is the original Myst box art. The simple title, the strange looking island and colors just immediately got the message across to me that this involves exploring a beautiful myst-erious island and I begged my parents to get a new computer for years just so I could play it.
Nice selection! One of the best covers I recently discovered, which I'm definitely going to pick up a copy of the game solely for, is the Japanese version of "X-COM: UFO Defense" for the Playstation 1. Looks like a cross between HR Giger and late 80s Guyver. Speaking of which, I always quite liked the cover of "Darkseed" too!
I collect PS2 games and might want to start putting the games with the really cool box art in certain places. I am easy to please, though, so even the generic cover the first Yakluza had will please me. Now ICO's European cover that thankfully was used for the PS3 version is right beside me right now. Love Planescape Torment's cover simply because of the mood it uses. Planescape Torment is in the same pile.
I always love how there's a demon essentially looking at the viewer in the Doom boxart. Almost like it's saying, "We're screwed up and you know you want this game!"
My favorite game boxart has to be SMT Nocturne's along with the Greatest Hits version of the Sly Cooper 1 cover. The original for that game was great, but the Greatest Hits art had more going on and represented the game far better. I also am a huge fan of the series, so there's that. Sly 2's cover is where things got a bit generic and then they went back to Sly jumping around in the lesser game's box art, which would be Sly 3(I rate it lower for the lack of clue bottles). Sly Thieves in Time uses the Sly jumping thing and it still doesn't look as good as it does for the Greatest Hits version of Sly 1. Maybe I just was mad at myself for having the black label Sly Cooper 1 box I've had since childhood. Who knows?
Kingdom Hearts always has great box art, but the first one had the best. It let you know this game had a serious tone, but also had Disney characters. It let you know what the mood was and that this game had giant keys being used as weapons. It was a great cover. The box art for Kingdom Hearts 2 is so-so. I so feel the second game itself was not as good to begin with, so that might be why I have a neutral opinion on the art.
The PS1 Doom's box art is amazing and just as goofy looking. I keep the game for the art.

The Eye of the beholder games have great box art along with the Might and Magic games!
I really like the art for the original civilization box. It really communicates the message of building a civilization which exists in both the ancient and modern era.
King's Quest III for me -- that cover art and game story is a perfect metaphor for life. Also, anything Roger Dean or Rodney Mathews is great just because it's beautiful.

As a Laura Bow fan, I'm always drawn to the box art of "The Dagger of Amon Ra" when it comes to choosing an avatar, even though "The Colonel's Bequest" is my favorite game in the series. I think it's the giant bust of Amon Ra in the background that draws me in. It's gold/yellow, big, and bright.

These are all pretty cool covers, but holy-moly, Daggerfall looks SO AWESOME! It's like a big foil Magic the Gathering card. :D
Great choices. I would have added the box art for Monkey Island 2, also by Steve Purcell and looking just as awesome. By the way, I guess the other space marine on the Doom cover is there because of the whole multiplayer thing (which was kind of huge at the time) and he's the same color, I'm guessing because at the time when it was drawn, there was only one space marine sprite, as opposed to the 4 different variations you got in later versions. Nice video, by the way.
I think the European boxart for Daggerfall is even better. The American one is super neat, but without the holographic effect, you really get to see the details and lighting on the guys face...badass.
My two personal favorite cover arts are Gran Turismo 4 and The Bouncer. Not retro in terms of age, but they're still incredible...at least to me. Especially GT4. That was a work of art, even in it's remarkable simplicity.
I think Psygnosis are pretty much the king's of making just epic game box artwork (Amiga, ST and PC atleast). Gunship 2000 had a pretty neat artwork but I think you have coverd the reall nice ones pretty nice.
Best big box game art -- Sacrifice.
Best packaging -- Baldurs Gate.
Best manual -- Civilization II.
Amiga honourable mention -- Populus 2.
I don't miss the size of the boxes but I do kinda think that it's a lost medium. The bigger boxes give a bigger canvas that DVD/Blu-ray boxes simply lack.
