Thanks for this video. I will try some of these suggestions, as my 5 month old puppy can get very bitey on the lead when overstimulated; I've tried the long line sniff walks but they actually make her much worse, maybe that's because she's still a puppy? I already tire her out through play in the garden before a walk and that definitely seems to help. I'm going to order one of those flirt poles though, I think she'd love that. When I drop the lead she still goes crazy on it, so I'll try taking a tug toy out next time to redirect her...fingers crossed :)
Is this in Portland? These trails look familiar! I moved from there in January. This is a great video, but how do you recommend getting your dog the exercise he needs while just taking him on the shorter walks to prevent the overstimulation. My doggo doesn’t have a reliable recall, so I cant do much off leash, and he doesn’t love fetch outside. And he has ALL THE ENERGY!
I recommend renting out fenced in sniffspots! Also, purchasing a flirt pole and tiring them out with them before attempting a walk can be helpful. Nosework inside before walking can also lower their arousal and energy. Sometimes, simply by taking them on short walks (but walking more frequently) you can still meet their exercise needs but without the frustration and overstimulation. I also recommend purchasing a long line and walking in quiet nature areas with room to roam on the long line!
Such a great video, thank you!
Huh?
