You wanna tighten the wheel nuts in a criss cross or diagonal pattern so there is an even distribution of weight force on the wheel. Also give less chance of stripping threads

Putting the car into gear will lock the front or the rear depending on if its RWD, FWD or AWD. But I still always use handbrake and a gear:)
Please why do you have to put the car on gear when changing the tyre?
So the car won't roll when it has no tire on - it's just an extra safety precaution so the car won't fall off the jack and get damaged.
I would do the same. It's the best way
