274. Narrowboat cruising on the Grand Union Canal

- A long-standing viewer of this channel was kind enough to offer me a day trip on her boat as she came along the Grand Union canal from Gayton to Weedon, so of course I jumped at the chance.

It was lovely having you on board! Thanks for coming :)
Thank you for letting us share your pride and joy. Hope you have many happy years cruising the cut.
Congrats on your narrow boat. Happy cruising.
Please consider starting a UA-cam Channel.
Hiya Emma, a lovely boat, thank you for sharing her with us. One point, if I may? Anything shading the panels on the roof will kill most of the power from that one, yes even that tiny bit of line will stop it from producing volts. I'm an ex-electrician.
Stay safe, Steve...
Happy cruising, Emma. Here's hoping you are never going to run out of space to stow just that one more book ;-) I can't think of anything more enjoyable on a cold winter-evening than sitting back in front of a fired stove with a good book in my hands and a cup of tea to go along with it. Well, except maybe for some pleasant company to share that moment with. Have you considered taking on a cat?
Edit: Also, nice choice of name. I knew I had read it somewhere years ago, but it took me a bit of digging until i remembered who he was. Just make sure not to get anyone named Sven aboard - lest history repeat itself ;-)
The young generation full-time narrowboating...love it. Well done, Emma.
People sometimes ask in the comments “where are the young narrowboaters?” so I shall point them to this video
I must say that your vlogs since selling your boat have not disappointing. Thanks.
Aha - I see your clever master plan in action David ! Sell up your own boat & then use your extensive CTC contacts to get regular trips on other people's boats. Very clever !! 😎
Yup!
And no maintenance, unless someone ropes you in to helping
That was such a lovely vlog! Great to see such an empowered young woman managing her life and career on a narrow boat, and lovely to see you on the water taking the tiller! Great photography too. Will definitely watch the silent version from the bowcam. Thanks David....really enjoyable x
Love seeing you back on the cut David. It's nice to see a younger person taking interest in narrowboating. I fear that unless more young folks do so, this lifestyle will die off in the coming years.
Not while the 'midlife crises' syndrome exists. It can only continue!
Here's wishing Emma all the best. Thanks David, always love the ride.
NICE! With "Cruising the Cut" "The Narrowboat Experience" and "Foxes Afloat" all throwing their towels in when it comes to living on a narrow boat - I look forward to Emma starting a vlog.
Thank you. I found these videos randomly and I just can't stop watching them.
I absolutely love the tranquility of these canals and your relaxed way of presenting.
Really makes me want to go on Holiday before University kicks of.
Even just sitting there, staring at the water will do.
Love and my greatest respect from western Germany. You're certainly living the good life.😁👍
Very nice! Great to do a little cruising the cut again with David. You have not lost any of your ability to put together a cruising video. You could probably spend a season cruising from one boat to the next with every owner pleased to have you aboard.
David, you've inspired the next generation, bravo! Emma, your love of reading really shines through...you are so well-spoken, quite bright, and interesting...reminds me of another narrowboater/vandemoniumer (is that a word?). Happy cruising!
Very cool to see her cranking it out there. Wonderfully happy video. Love the brass plate bit.
A headless toy doll called Marie Antoinette! Good thing I sat on the veranda when I just spit out my drink from laughing so hard! 🤣
Love the name of this narrow boat. I love how you find ways to take us out on the water even though you're not a boat owner at the present time. Thanks for taking us along on this little adventure. Gloria 🐂
l love this young lady's sense of humour! All best wishes to her.
Thank you David for the wonderful video and for sharing with us the peace of the Canals, i was very happy to see a younger person having interest in the narrowboat lifestyle, we need a whole new generation of Emma's to keep this UK's national treasure on
Hello from Detroit Michigan USA 94/275 thank you for taking us on your adventure
Detroit also just north of It…..
Mary Antoinette we love this kiddo 🥰
@Jonathan kwabquack Or maybe they are just two interesting ppl with are shared love of narrowboats as they portray themselves not everything has to evolve into a physical relationship and its none of our business if that did happen..
What a charming little trip. As much as it's all good to see the parades & fancy locks and all that, I do like it when you offer up these little cruises where we meet a couple interesting people. Nice introduction to Emm and her vessel. I hope we get to see her when she's in fresh paint - the boat, I mean. ;)
Hi David. Had a chuckle at your meeting boats at bridges as it reminded me of Paul waiting for 5 boats to come through while hovering by a wasp 🐝 nest, he was greatly relieved when able to move on 😂. If I had known you were so near would have come down to say hello as only on the River Nene. All the very best to Emma I hope she has many years of fun on the waterways. Hugs 💕🦆
Ah, and I’m currently at the other end of the Nene now as well! (sort of). Hope you’re OK
It's nice to see new being added to the narrowboat gang. Highty ho from USA. 😊
Ahhh! Just when I needed it, David takes me on a trip with fluffy clouds, birds chirping, and a charming new acquaintance. Such a great way to travel without the hassle of paying, packing, 'plane-ing, etc. It was a restful trip for me and, I hope, all the viewers. 👍
David…I found your channel by accident and have never left. I am working my way through your back catalogue and find it all strangely addictive. I have absolutely no experience of narrow boating but marvel at the victorian masterpiece that you navigate.
Have the narrowboat community adopted “what three words”, the app that can fix your location to within 3sqM, excellent for medical emergencies and also if friends, family or maintenance/supply/breakdown services need to locate you accurately.
Kind regards
Stew
Yes, some people use it
Another fun ride. Thanks
Emma and Ethel are both beautiful. As a disabled Iraq war veteran with way too much time on my hands this is my dream.
Looked like a really nice trip indeed...thanks for sharing
Great trip!! (Especially the chocolate digestives!!!)
What a lovely gesture from Emma. David it was a grand wee vlog, as always and how great to see The Commodore……often see him on the videos. Thank you, as always, for sharing.
Well done Emma & David!!
Very cool especially like the frog on the tiller arm
Wow...You passed my purple boat at Gayton. 😀
Love to see you back cruising, David.
Another wonderful, calm video. Emma is a delight. I hope to see her again. And, it's so nice to see the countryside and the funny commentary that we've gotten accustomed to.
fabulous Vlog and great to see young people wanting to enjoy narrowboating, safe cruising Emma.. all the best from Tasmania..
David, I was right. Far more enjoyable than the final episode of Neighbours. Lovely boat and wonderful to have some of the sort of footage I have always enjoyed about your channel.
Well done Emma…..cheers from Australia
Best part of UA-cam. Realizing that a video has such an impact on Another human being. I still truly enjoy this channel thank you for sharing
Nice trip. It helps when there are no locks to slow you down. If you don't have your own narrow boat, this will do.
What a lovely video! Northamptonshire is so beautiful.
Nice to have you back on the cut. Enjoying the variety of vlogs. Thanks C&Lx
Very wholesome episode. I'm happy for her achievement.
Boating is always amazing and stress free (most of the time) .excellent x
Well done Emma 👍🔨📐😄
You’re a good man to help someone out by answering a letter the visiting Emma in person. Glad that I was able to see it!
SOMEONE is getting a good bit of cruising this season without having to OWN a boat!😊
Brilliant, David. I hope this can become part of a series of showing us other people's choices, why they love narrow boating, and their decor and working habits. We could then get a look at a variety of boats, including wide-beams and quirky craft you come across. The history of the canals always fascinates me and the buildings alongside them. Keep safe and well, David. See you again soon I hope and good luck to Emma and thanks for inviting us aboard.
John, Ontario, Canada
I always enjoy your vlogs, but this one was special.
pretty awesome, Im really digging the gargoyle on the hatch
I really enjoy your videos. I find them most relaxing. Thank you for sharing
Good for you Emma. You're a lot braver and bolder than me. It's something I would love to do but I'm not confident enough to quit the day job and save up for a life like this. It's almost worth it just for the idylic scenery.
The Commodore!! I'm subscribed to Rugby Boat's channel, because I can only dream of owning a boat. Great to see this go-getter make it happen! And she's a fan of the vlogbrothers (spied a Hank Green book on her shelf). Nice to see you back on a tiller, if only briefly!
Bumble and James of Rugby boats ? yeah seeeeen lots of video's from them.
Awesome video. Good for her for doing what she likes. :). Many safe travels to you and her. Live confidently and peacefully
I’m not sure why but I would love to see David do a fish-out-of-water episode where he spends a day sailing in the Atlantic with a racing team.
Maybe on Time Bandit crabbing in the Bearing sea.... just kidding
Or a crossover episode with Sailing Uma?
I’d spend the entire episode vomiting 🤮
@@CruisingTheCut David! We need you to climb the mast and unfurl the sail. If you feel like you're going to fall, aim for the netting!
It's good to see eccentricity is alive and well in the younger generations.
True. So many wonderful things have been discovered by eccentrics. The original thinkers these days are all the same. And if we are all addicted to narrow boat videos, we have discovered one delightful thing at least. Long live the eccentric.
Nice to hear that it sounds like she has family nearby as it also sounds like she's quite a long way from home ...
Very enjoyable. I look forward to watching the linked video. Beautiful scenery as usual on the canals. Enjoyable commentary. Thank you. Cheers.
What a sweet lady God bless her
Nice to see you at the tiller again.
Cheers
Excellent name
That was nice. Thanks for sharing!
Emma has a Huni-Rex geared unicycle. Those are rare! This vid ticks two of my boxes, unicycles and narrowboats :)
nice trip thanks
Nice to see you enjoy other people’s boats these days. And someone’s who was inspired by yourself, no less!
I can see how you don’t need your own boat to enjoy (boat-)life in this position 😉 Cheers!
I just finished watching your shows on Amazon Video. Fabulous job filming.
Thank you. Where Prime ends is equivalent to vlog 201 here, so everything from 2020 on is just here on UA-cam 👍
Really enjoyed the ride-along - thank you kindly to you and Emma!
I hope you're invited to do more of these "guest appearances."
Good stuff Em! Loved the digestives delivery. I always try and pick Motels where I can get a room with a balcony, close to the pool so I can jump in. Only from the first floor these days, I'm 66 next month. Nice 1 David, a real goodie, thanks.
Very lovely video, David! You inspire. 😎💕
Really enjoyable watch, as ever.
more wonderful views and great photography and editing!! Thanks a bunch!! we always enjoy your posts!! Emma is a woman of my dreams,,,,determined to head toward her goals and willing to try new things and exploration trips!! Boat was very nicely appointed and with her rework ill bet it is even better!! I was a bit nervous on the windy sections as i know how the wind can get hold of a 28ft lake cruiser. No matter the corvette engine and high top speed, when you come into a dock or loading on a trailer or tying up where there are other boats, you have a real challenge!! best wishes as we approach the fall of the year and be careful in your travels,,,bill in north alabama USA
This was awesome! Thank you!
Great one David. 👍🇦🇺🙏
Very enjoyable.
Many thanks!
That is some very good houseboat handling.
Headless doll, constellation curtains, books, unicycles... I like her! First thought the boats name was "Dawn Treader", that would have been fitting 🙂
7:37 Interesting solar panel setup. Had maybe been difficult on your boat?
??
@@CruisingTheCut Dawn Treader? Narnia...
Solar panels? Having the panels down the sides on your boat with the possibility of tilting them up.
Would like to come over and see the narrowboating in person. Maybe some day..
David, you've inspred the next generation of narrow boaters...now you need to get Emma started on her own UA-cam channel 😁
I just checked three sellers and most is either sold or under offer 😁 I liked the prices though
I was just thinking of you 😊☕🍪
Ethel The Unready. :DDDDD Love that.
Ohhhh.... you touched a tiller.... its only a matter of time before you buy another one :)
Missing the cut?😉
Thanks Emma, you'll get him buying a boat again soon.
I miss the peace of the canals, yes
@@CruisingTheCut very carefully worded😉
I think I would enjoy living on a narrow boat
Alan herd did a tv program on Dover
David, thank you for such an interesting trip and for letting us meet the lovely Emma. So good to see you with a tiller in your hand again. Should be more of it ;)
Hope you are getting settled and enjoying your new land-based lifestyle. Just wondering, now that you are going land-based any chance of you being like young Colin Fox and rejoining the Broadcast world?
Cheers David, stay safe and well.
question for you
of all your yrs on the canals have u always felt safe? have u ever been broken into? ur old boat vandalised? ty in advance if u reply
I have felt safe but I do know people who’ve been broken into or had their boat vandalised. It happened to a lady in London just a couple of weeks ago, random vandalism, everything was trashed.
There has been much in the news recently about droughts being declared in some parts of the UK. In what ways are the canals affected by such conditions?
Also, while there are plenty of videos about keeping warm in winter on a narrowboat, with daytime temperatures currently approaching +30C how do you keep cool in summer?
You moor in the shade (under a tree), and open the doors and windows. Pull the curtains on the sunny side, to stop it shining in.
Canals are affected by lack of water from empty reservoirs mainly
@@CruisingTheCut Thank you for your prompt and concise reply :-)
While navigating the canals, it seems the boats stay to the right of each other, but on the British highways and roads, the opposite is the case. Why is that the case? Is it because of nautical rules? Sorry, this is probably a repetitive question, but I haven't found it asked anywhere else. Thanks from Tennessee, USA.
Hi, please see my website faq page cruisingthecut.co.uk/f-a-q/
To discourage jousting, of course.
It sounded like the wings on that butterfly needed some oil.
Is there a Cruising The Cut Porthole or Composting Toilet?
Emma is quite a gutsy girl! Did you sell your narrowboat, David?
Yes
David, that was no "dog" on duty it was a "Westie".
Aye, this. Much more vigilant and ferocious than a mere dog.
I wished we would have narrow boats in Ontario- 🇨🇦 But we have only big lakes....
I love that each and every boat feels like a totally unique creation. Maybe some are the same model but no two will ever be the same.
What was that ultra wide one at 12:48?
Just a widebeam narrowboat, probably 12 feet wide
How does living in a camper van compare with living in a narrow boat, ie. comfort ,amenities?
I’ve never lived in my campervan, only done a few trips so I can’t really compare
Too bad she isn't a gamer. Dawnbreaker is an instant reminder of Skyrim and it would make for a cool new paintjob.
Wicked
So we know a narrowboat can tow another, would it be possible to throw a line to a stuck craft, have them attach it securely to one of the T studs (or whatever they're called, the T shaped metal things you attach ropes to) and in theory tow the craft off of the silt? Obviously, you'd ask if the other craft would like a hand, and wouldn't just assume...
The "T" shaped things are called cleats and yes a narrow boat can tow another but it can be a bit tricky because of the dimensions of the canals and the well narrow-ness of a narrow boat making them not the most maneuverable craft to begin with
Yes. I've towed grounded narrowboats off shallows several times with my NB.
Go on, admit it, you miss being on the "water"? These "short day trips", are they a build up to the main event! - David is back "Cruising the Cut".
