    A very nice performance ,one of my favorite Trovatores.
    She is in excellent form here ,and i think ,that ,as far as the quality of the recording is concerned ,is easier for us to have an idea about how large was this voice ,her unique beautiful opulence. Natural gift + incomparable, unique techique = one of the greatest singers of the century...

      Milanov e' distante anni luce dalla Caballe'. Dalla Callas poi non ne parliamo.

    Zinka had some great moments during her first MET period 1937-47 & as fine as this Act 4 recit. & aria is, I still feel her studio recording after she returned to the MET of this aria in her complete recording with Bjorling is even better. Although she could sometimes be inconsistent in LIVE performances even during her very best years (1951-55), her studio recordings seldom, if ever, indicated this. In the studio TROVATORE her recitative before the Act 4 aria she sings a soft high b flat that, IMO, is her best in this moment followed by the aria which is memorable as well. Another studio recording of O PATRIA MIA from 1953 is also her very finest singing of this aria. These 2 examples mentioned here I would play first for anyone unfamiliar with her singing.

      Her best years, '51 -'55?! You've got to be kidding! Fine wines improve with age, singers, quite the opposite, and Milanov was no exception. The '50s witnessed a steep, continuous decline in the size and the beauty of her voice.

    • @ER1CwC
      @ER1CwC 2 місяці тому

      @@photo161 I agree that she was better earlier on, but she never had a vocal crisis. That's a considerable achievement. She sang at a high standard through the 1950s.

    Wow. After Callas, maybe the best performance I've ever heard of this scene. Milanov's only flaw is a lack of soul, but here she conveys a certain emotion. And the trills are absolutely dazzling.

    03:57 Milanov does a genuine trill! We don't get to hear that very often.
    05:37 Heaven-like pianissimo. She literally pulled it out of thin air.

    • @rugby8-Philadelphia
      @rugby8-Philadelphia Рік тому +2

      I have to disagree about the "trill". She kinda gargles the note prior and "slides" into the sorta-trill -- however 3 other trills are pretty much absent.
      Wrong note sung "improvido le pe-NE" NE is an Ab - she sings a Bb and I assume self-corrects to the Ab --- the Bb is consonant to the key, so, it doesn't sound horrible - just not Verdi.
      The pp Bb is lovely in the following "impro-vi-DO" -- however That Bb *IS* supposed to resolve down to the Ab in the Fminor chord

      "It"?
      Trill? Sing Leonora? Sing the correct notes? Etc....
      Did I mention anything about the quality, or lack thereof, of my trill? Or desire/interest to sing Leonora?
      Irrespective - none of that has any bearing on my response. If you like it, that's Great. I've mentioned some thoughts/opinions I have. If you don't agree, also Great.

      Think what you like. I said regarding "knowledge". I did mention of number of things about the score of Trovatore. Those would be facts.
      Do I have opinions about art (music)? Yes. Do I call my opinions fact? No.
      I think that your age - 89, as you have said, may be affecting your ability to discern between facts and opinions.
      If you doubt my statements regarding specific notes in the score, please take a look at the score for Il Trovatore
