- As news of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump poured in, local politicians took to social media with their reaction to the violence.
"The former president is safe," is what The Secret Service reported after shots were fired at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was speaking for about 5 minutes before the assassination attempt. Trump was immediately escorted off the stage after the shots were fired.
Washington leaders reacted to the news with near-universal shock and condemnation of political violence.
