I'm fairly new, so I don't know if you've listened to Homeward Bound yet. If you haven't, you should. Mother and Child Reunion is another good one altho' it's Paul solo.
This is the album cover from Almost Famous when the mom says, "They're high on pot.",
"America" so you can hear the full version of the song when the sister says it's why she's moving out.
"The Sound of Silence," "Cecelia," "Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme," "My Littke Town" (their one reunion song).
Their sound grew dramatically over the few years they were together. So they covered a very wide range of sound.
Simon is a killer acoustic guitar player, and he certainly does have upbeat songs like this. My vote for the next song is America.
Homeward Bound, America, or Sounds of Silence would be my picks. Also, when you loop back around to the 70's, I strongly suggest love to love by UFO. You guys will dig. F****** rocks but also kind of Proggy. You guys did Rock bottom like a million years ago, and UFO is long overdue for a revisit...

In this movie, it is a *very* significant detail that Mrs Robinson is married.
Yeah, Ms can be anything. I've been using it since I was a teenager.
Back in the late 60s or early 70s when Ms. became popular, there was a letter to the editor in some magazine or newspaper that said that this was discriminatory because there's only Mr. for men, but it could mean "Mister" for married, or "Master" for young and unmarried (not that anyone still actually used that except for Alfred the butler on Batman!). The writer said we needed something with four letters to mean unmarried for men and he suggested "Mast", and then he said we needed something with three letters to mean "definitely married" for men and he suggested "Stp." -- for "stupid". ;-)

People who weren’t alive at the time don’t realize how huge Simon & Garfunkel were. In the ’70s, when I was growing up, the second most popular musical question (after “When are the Beatles getting back together?”) was “When are Simon & Garfunkel getting back together?” When they finally did, for their 1981 concert in Central Park, half a million people showed up.

I was living in NYC that year and just happened to walk by Central Park while the concert was happening. Awesome sound system; I was probably a half mile away and could still hear the music pretty clearly.
If you like this song and are not old enough to have seen “The Graduate”, you owe it to yourself to see the movie. Then you will love “Mrs Robinson”.
I read somewhere that, late in life, Anne Bancroft supposedly said it was common for middle age men to come up to her in public and say that their first crush as teenagers was on her Mrs. Robinson character.

I believe Joe DiMaggio wanted to sue Simon and Garfunkel for using his name in the song. His people talked him out of it and convinced him that it was a compliment to him.

In the movie "The Graduate," Ben (Dustin Hoffman's character) may have been able to break from the current norms (metaphorically) as he and Elaine (Katharine Ross' character) escape from the wedding (literally) but they still had not figured out what they wanted to be. The glazed ("now what-the-fxxk am I going to do?") look that Dustin gives at the end is priceless. Ah, such is life, and we have to figure that out for ourselves.

The part about Joe DiMaggio, he's saying that all of the hero's of his childhood are gone, there's no more hero Joe. It was a commentary on where America was at that moment and how far culture/society had fallen. When they're singing about Mrs. Robinson putting something with her cupcakes and most of all she has to "hide it from the kids", they're suggesting that all Mrs. Robinson has a drinking problem, that's how she is dealing with everything, but she's trying to hide it and put up a front that everything is fine. It's a dark song.
I heard somewhere that Simon ran into Joe DiMaggio at a restaurant and he was a little upset like what do you mean I went away? I'm right here. Simon explained your a hero but your retired, your not gonna come up to the plate to save the day. So Joe was okay with it after that.
The lyric "Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home" has always meant to me that Mrs. Robinson has been institutionalized ... a 'sanitorium' as they used to call it in those days for the suicidal or addicted housewives like Anne Sexton or Sylvia Plath.
Yeah, rehab for addiction (alcohol). The other hint is "you have to hide it from the kids". The interesting thing is it references the movie but the song wasn't finished yet so only an instrumental version is used in the film.
I wouldnt't describe either as housewives nor were sanitoriums exclusively for women. Women were far more likely to be institutionalized BITD because their husband or father could do so without their consent or proper evaluation. Asylums were weaponizes against women for divorce or obtaining control of their money and/or property. I understand what you were trying to say and comment you for your examples.

True story: after a "SCREAMING TREES" show in a small bar on Dickson St Fayetteville Ar 1986 audience & band members hung out on that hot summer Thursday night.
A fellow ran after a gal YELLING, "OH CECELLIA...." & w/ that in about a minute 60 people were SCREAMING with the TREES that song.

another one of my faves.. We had the good fortune to catch them on their tour when they came through Houston. We had three nosebleed seats and two floor tickets. My twin girls (now 35) grew up on S&G and loved The Concert in Central Park and they had the boxed set of all of their music, so we let them have the floor tickets.. both of them were sobbing at the end of it all, they enjoyed it so much.. meanwhile, in the nosebleeds, I was doing what you normally do at a concert, shouting out Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard when these tight ass people in front of us looked back at me and told me to shut up.. what the literal eff.. glad I didn't spark up a doobie!

Originally the song was titled by Paul Simon "Mrs. ROOSEVELT." When asked to be a part of the "The Graduate" soundtrack, the director, Mike Nichols, asked him to change it to Mrs. ROBINSON, who was the character played by the lead actress, Anne Bancroft.
Actually, the true story is that the song was renamed Mrs. RObinson before it was included in the soundtrack.
The Graduate is an iconic movie. Brilliant. And S&G music throughout.

Paul Simon has mastered the art of the “turn of phrase” and is one of the best lyricists ever. That ability combined with everything else he does so well makes him an iconic singer/songwriter. Those iconic lyrics reflected the social upheaval of the mid to late 1960s, and a yearning for the loss of an American innocence that had passed only 5 years earlier from the post WW2 era from the 1940s to early 60s.

Two things to consider: the line “Everywhere you look, you lose” is a consistent comment on political realities, even today; and Joe DiMaggio wasn’t just a baseball player. In this song, he’s a well understood hero symbol and just like the whole point of the movie this song comes from -The Graduate - American culture had begun to devolve into the abyss of the anti-hero. The movie is a very 60s look as to why. Great film. Great song. Depressing subject/reality.
Joe DiMaggio was the best player for the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1951. He married Marilyn Monroe. He was a very big deal. I agree with StantheMan that he represents a high point in American culture to millions of people. Many Americans of a certain age consider the 1960s to be a disaster on many levels, the beginning of the unravelling of culture in general.
@@cosybully I agree, in part at least. In my view the cultural unraveling began in the 50s which made the crises (political assassinations, race riots, Vietnam War failures, Nixon, etc.) of the 60s and 70s possible. I believe Carter honestly wanted to overcome it, but failed miserably. Reagan succeeded to a limited degree in restoring some level of trust and confidence, but too many cultural touch points and social indicators had been on the decline by then for things to really turn. Of course, this is not about who’s President at any given time, but they do serve a useful symbolic purpose in analyzing this subject because it’s the one office that is elected as representative of the whole nation. What’s obvious is there is now a deep cultural schism in America that will not easily be overcome or settled. People literally hate each other for ideological reasons. I fear we ultimately face a deadly reckoning as a country because of it.
And yet, Paul Simon is on record saying that Mickey Mantle was his favorite baseball player. But mik-ee-man-tel doesn't have the correct number of syllables that jo-duh-maj-ee-oh has. So Joltin' Joe knocked The Mick outta the box. The fact that Joe, as an icon of late depression America resonated is perhaps one of those unconscious things that show why Simon is a great artist, and not just a workaday singer-songwriter.

In 1970 our elementary school had a talent show. A group of 6 - 5th grade girls - sang this song for their talent. It cause a whirlwind of controversy - and I as a 5th grader didn't understand why the person had to get up and wash his face. By the 11th grade I understood.

@@linjicakonikon7666 As I wrote elsehwhere, Simon is a superb guitarist - totally underrated. He can do the Bert Jansch thing, as in "Anji." He handles extremely difficult chord progressions easily, as in "American Tune." And he has adapted his style to other styles from around the world multiple times in his career.
I have known several professional level guitarists. They have all thought highly of him.
He's talking about voting for candidates when he says "any way you lose." It's a slam on politicians.
Watching you guys talking about this song as if it was created in a vacuum makes me think at how removed we are from the world of 1967. And then I read the lyrics again and think of how little the world has changed from 1967. Rampant drug use by the "respectable middle class" (the Stones mined this field very well) cynical politics and a sick longing for a supposed "better" past.
BTW, after their breakup, Art Garfunkel, who got a Masters in Math from Columbia University (1967), taught high school geometry at a private school in Connecticut.

I was in high school in southern California from 1970-1974. One of those years in my english class, we broke down the lyrics to Scarborough Fair. It has stayed with me all these decades. You are right, it is a masterpiece.

This was one of several Simon and Garfunkel songs on “The Graduate” soundtrack, which also included “Scarborough Fair/Canticle”, “The Sound of Silence”, and “April Come She Will”. All are highly worthy of an appearance on your channel. Paul Simon is a genius songwriter and a master guitarist. His solo catalog is impressive, too. Check out “Late in the Evening”. It has the most sublime Afro-Cuban rhythm. And the drummer on this track performed with two pairs of drumsticks, one pair in each hand. Amazing. 🎶🥁
While the soundtrack includes many songs written by Simon and Garfunkel, songs like _“Scarborough Fair/Canticle”_ , _“The Sound of Silence”_ , and _“April Come She Will”_ were first released on their earlier albums. I think _"Mrs Robinson"_ was the only hit song which was written for the movie.

Eventually you guys should also get around to Paul Simon's "Graceland" album. So many great songs there: "The Boy in the Bubble," "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes," the title track...
Staying with S&G, I'd vote for "America" as the next track. Brilliant songwriting there.

This song was written to be used in the movie "The Graduate" as one of the main characters is Mrs. Robinson. I can't recommend watching "The Graduate" highly enough both for some the best integration of great popular music (Simon and Garkunkel's) into a film, but also because it is one of the all-time greatest movies and speaks to your place in life as recent college graduates (though from a late 60s perspective there is still very much relevancy today as the themes are universal). Loved the reaction!

The song was written before the movie, and never intended to be in movie. The name of the character in the movie was changed to fit the song in because the director liked it.

@@RadCenter Yes, that is mostly true Nancy -- I was simplifying the backstory. However, the song wasn't already finished and just inserted into the movie. The song's chorus was changed to fit the character in the movie (the song originally referred to "Mrs. Roosevelt") and the song was only recorded after knowing it was to be used in the movie. The character's name in the movie wasn't changed, but rather the character's name in the song was revised to fit the movie.
Well if you like Simon and Garfunkel "word choices" there's no way around it you have to take in "Sound Of Silence" next. Their best song and maybe THE best song period.
"Miss" = unmarried woman. "Mrs".= married woman. "Ms." is like "Mr." = the person could be married or not married.

Paul Simon is a musical genius.
To my ears Bookends was S&G's greatest album. The song 'America' is almost cinematic in its grandeur, and the music / vocals throughout are sublime! A kind of folkier Pet Sounds, and certainly no less of an achievement.
With my music nerd friends I have been making this argument for decades. The conventional wisdom is the best S&G album is Bridge. It has always been Bookends to me. Both are great, though.

Hey guys! I'm so happy you're listening to more beauties by this duo. "Mrs. Robinson" is on the soundtrack from the 1967 film The Graduate. There are so many songs by Simon & Garfunkel in this movie. The director of the movie, Mike Nichols, had been listening to songs by the duo and was amazed by them so he asked Clive Davis if he could hire them to do songs for the movie. If you watch the movie you'll see a very young Dustin Hoffman. I won't ruin it by telling you what it's about but it's a must see. When the duo split up in 1970, both artists continued successful solo careers. I'd say if you haven't heard "Scarborough Fair/Canticle", "My Little Town", the list goes on, have a listen. Then the solo stuff by both is incredible! "All I Know" by Art Garfunkel omg beautiful and "Mother and Child Reunion" by Paul Simon also incredible. There's so much history with these 2 artists, thanks guys!
Simon & Garfunkel doesn't only play just music but they play feelings. Truly, they create a feel that touches the spirit. Try anything from Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme. First album I ever bought and I wore out the grooves on the LP. Everything is perfect.

You should listen to "The Sound of Silence" immediately followed by the incredible cover by Disturbed in the same session.
Disturbed sucks. I got tired of people raving about that song in about five minutes. The S&G version is a classic. The Disturbed remake is weak. Just having a powerful voice doesn't make a song great. It still matters what you do with it and how you surround it with melody and instrumentation.
"The Only Living Boy In New York" has to be on your list. My favorite. It (and The Boxer) still make me choke up / tear up to this day, 50 years later. It is specifically about the two of them starting to go their separate ways ("Tom" is Art Garfunkel who took off to Mexico to film a movie).
Astonishing song. My favourite S&G track. S&G's first band was called Tom & Jerry - Art was Tom and Paul was Jerry.

America is a great song to do next by Simon and garfunkel. Its about the cold War. And its my favorite song of theirs to play on guitar.

Definitely a cover comparison of America by S&G and Yes' cover is called for. Another reactor, @JustJP succinctly sums up the difference in versions, but I think you need to listen for yourselves to discover it.
@@IllumeEltanin thanks for the info. I never knew yes did a cover. I listened to it and thought it was interesting. The length was unnecessary. And repeating verses. But I dont like yes that much to begin with so it's not really fair to them. But they added a cool groove to it. I'd just never listen to it again unless I'm showing it to someone who hasn't heard it. Simon and garfunkel's version is perfect and never needed a cover.

I have to giggle at "the length is unnecessary" comment.
If one is a lover of prog, which I am, sometimes length is necessary for what non-prog lovers tend to refer to as "noodling." Fortunately, Yes' musicianship is so good, I totally get in to their "noodling."

Mrs. Robinson is a "cougar" from the late 1960s movie The Graduate. Actor Dustin Hoffman plays a guy who has just graduated from college so is exactly the age of you two guys. Mrs. Robinson is the wife of his father's business partner. Watch the movie to hear a great soundtrack and find out what happens due to this "scandal"

Just to give the fellas some perspective, Joe DiMaggio was the Tom Brady of his time, baseball being the king of American sport back then. He was married to Marilyn Monroe, which is why he honored her grave the rest of his life.

In Simon's official biography "Paul Simon: A Life", Marc Eliot details this song. The song was written long before "The Graduate". There are two versions of the song in the movie, neither is the version on Bookends. They are much shorter versions. The album actually came out six months after the movie, in 1968. Simon wrote the music in 1964 and started on the lyrics in 65. The last two versus are descriptions of contemporary events of the time. Yes, the koo-koo-a-joo is a reference to The Beatles. Simon happened to be at the Abbey Road studios when they were recording Magical Mystery Tour. The line was his way of paying homage to one of his favorite bands. The part about going to the candidates debate is a reference to the first televised presidential debates in 1962. You could go to the debates without leaving your sofa. But, like most elections, no matter who you choose, you lose. As Simon describes it, the part about Joe DiMaggio served two purposes. First, it paid homage to the sport of baseball. Simon wanted to work in something about his favorite player, Micky Mantle. When asked why he didn't, he replied, "Its about the rhythm. Its about the beat" - In other words, the name just didn't fit. So, he went his second favorite - DiMaggio. The second purpose was to highlight the fact that people like DiMaggio were in short supply. It was not meant to be taken literally. DiMaggio hadn't "gone" anywhere. DiMaggio even asked Simon what he meant when they happened to run into each other one night. He was making commercials for a bank at the time. What Simon was referring to was the attitude DiMaggio had that Simon felt had disappeared from society - while most people who were considered "heroes" would take their status over the top, DiMaggio was extremely modest and reserved about his status as a baseball god. He was also very devoted to Marilyn Monroe, preferred to keep his private life private, and maintained his dignity no matter what.

"the succinct and crisp pronunciation of the 't' sound at the end of "debate" is so Paul Simon-ish. So elegant. You should hear how he ends the phrase "New England" in his song "Duncan".

Paul Simon was at a restaurant and saw Joe DiMaggio at another table eating with his agent and went over to introduce himself and say hello. Joe said, "I know who you are. Why did you write that song about me? I didn't go anywhere, I'm still here. " Simon explained that he used Joe as an example of a great American hero and was really asking where were our heroes today."
Joe seemed happy about that. After Simon left he asked his agent, "Did he pay to use my name? How can he use my name without paying me?"
And you have to watch The Graduate to have any context for this song. Mrs Robinson is an older, respectable woman who is having an affair with her daughters fiance. So, lots of hypocrisy and irony intended with the religious language.

I don't think you have to have seen the graduate for this song. I grew up with this song and didn't see the graduate until high school. It doesn't exactly match the movie. There is a lot of stuff in the song that stands alone.
@@Meeker128-Amy You're partially right, but you can't know who Mrs. Robinson Is without having seen the movie. Additionally, the rhythm and tempo, matched to the movie image - Benjamin's frantic race to find the marriage site cements that song in that film.
You need to watch the movie The Graduate. It’s got this song and lots of other good S & G music in it. The song is about an alcoholic, high society woman who is a cougar and an affair she is having. Next? Cecelia (lively) or Scarborough Faire. Brightest blessings and hugs!

You really, really NEED to watch the movie "The Graduate" (1967), Starring a very young Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft and Katherine Ross. It picked an Oscar for Director Mike Nichols. It's about an older woman (Nowadays referred to as a cougar) who seduces her daughters' boyfriend. In many way it was years ahead of its time, not least for the soundtrack.
You should have mentioned the connection, that this Mrs Robinson is Anne Bancroft's role in the movie, and she being said "cougar".

Try Sounds of Silence next. It was their first big hit. When you look at their whole catalog they definitely have a diverse set of songs. The foundation is their harmonies. They normally recoded singing into the same mic rather than two different mics.
Definitely see the movie The Graduate it will give context this song.

I was a Sr. in HS in 1971 & my English teacher was so impressed by Paul Simon's lyrics he called him a poet. Then he had us study and discuss those lyrics instead of the standard Frost, Tennyson, etc.
Went to same HS in Queens as them, Forest Hills HS. They were known as Tom and Jerry, but school did not let them play. When they were S&G they were asked back by said school, and their response was the middle, and some other, fingers. Bravo.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s there was so much great music coming out all the time, you just couldn't afford all the vinyl. Everyone I know listened to everything: Motown, Rock, Funk, Punk, Pop, Country. Yes, Country.

Dustin Hoffman's first major film role; Mel Brook's late wife, Anne Bancroft, plays the ultimate cougar, Mrs. Robinson. Movie is hysterically funny, filled with acidically social and political insights and humor. Most amazingly, although over 50 years old, the film and song still hold up today!
