  • Finally, an in-depth video on the Arca Swiss F-Line view camera. I go into the design of the F-Line cameras in general and my particular F-Line "Basic" model in detail.

    you are 1/2 right about the rail bracket, I have a sinar F2 and they call it a 'rail clamp' so guess it could apply to all modular camera designs; also if you extend your F -field there is NO reason not to use TWO rail clamps!, and tripods, of course to support the 'diving board' end, and give balance to the extreme extension, esp. if they are the smaller footprint ones.

    Damn you Mike! ;) After this awesome review I really want a 4x5 :D

    nice video, there are no detents on the shift because this movement is used to change formats, as you say in the video; however detents work by a spring with a ball bearing in front of it, if in this case you removed the format frame, the ball / spring would fly out and probably be lost forever in your carpet, or in the grass outside, hence why they probably went without it on this movement. ( P.S.: sorry if you were upset about my other comments, Yes i meant the pack-back polaroid, so very sorry for all the trouble you went through with that single back holder- thought no one used them nowdays.)

      Good point re the detent. I guess I didn't put two and two together :-). Having detents on the sliding movements is not a requirement, anyway. "Center" doesn't really mean much for shift or rise -- if you don't like your composition, you're going to slide those movements anyway.
      No problem re the instant backs. "New 55" are the ones making instant 4x5 film these days, in relatively "experimental" mode. Can't say that I recommend it at this point. Of course my issues were probably beginner issues.

      don't worry, Iv'e seen some of their videos on those backs, no wonder you had issues!!

    Thanks very much for the video. I always want, well, hope that is, to own a view camera. Looked at the Arca Swiss years back but your overview really got me sold.
    Also want to say I get a grin on my chin every time someone says SNAFU as I remember used just that to brush away critics on the White House FBI File controversies in front of the press. He apparently wasn't quite sure what the acronym refers to. ;-)

    Great video, thanks for introducing the Arca Swiss.
    I've had my eye on them but have a feeling that I just wouldn't get enough frames out of one to justify the purchase.
    For now, I'm happy to live vicariously through your GAS attack, though I am mindful that GAS is contagious!

      Yes, be careful. Stand well away. Especially stay away from the next few vids I'm working on...

    Nice Video! I have a 4x5 f metric and i love it! I haven't had much time with it as things have gotten busy for me at work. The one thing that keeps bugging me is that the format frames are at the lowest position and so you basically get rise only and not fall. So i'm going to be setting up the camera in the center so i can have rise and fall as well.

    What about the lens board can i buy a universal lens board that would mount in

      You can get, say, an aftermarket Linhof Technika-compatible adapter board that just stays in place, and then use Technika boards on your lenses. It’s actually shown in this video. I think I got it off eBay. That’s really the best way to go, IMO, esp if you already use Technika boards.

    Mike, beautiful camera, simplicity is the key in the design and engineering. Is this replacing your Horseman?
    If I was to go large format this is the camera I would get, right now my Mamiya Pro TL 645 is what I can handle
    And still 35mm in film. Great video!

    • @mike.thomas

      It was really a desire to try a monorail camera, and yes, the slight possibility of replacing the Horseman. However, it weighs more than twice as much as the Horseman, so not a direct replacement. As it turns out, my Chamonix has kind of replaced the Horseman for light-weight use. I like the fact that I can use Linhof Technika boards on both the Arca Swiss and Chamonix. Keeps things relatively simple. Probably the simplest thing would be the Arca Swiss F-Field that I mentioned in the video. It could conceivably replace both the F-Line Basic and the Chamonix (Though a bit heavier than the latter). It's one of those things where you approach your final decision in a roundabout way and end up spending more to get where you could have started :-)

      It's funny -- I showed my Chamonix to a co-worker a couple weeks ago, and the rest of the day he'd come back to me with questions about the camera and large format. He's not even doing any photography currently, but he was really caught up in the movements and size of the negative.
      Then there's Jason (of all trades), who commented here, who says he wants one, but can't figure out why :-)

    • @junelopez215
      @junelopez215 8 років тому

      Ha, well you have to get into photography to try it out. I've waited for long time to get into large format so I went for the horseman 45FA for now. Maybe in the future I can get my hands on Arca Swiss. This camera is pretty nice and some awesome features...
      It's hard to keep up with you Mike because you are always changing it up but I respect that you've done your research to help others like myself make that decision.
      Yes, it's addictive :)

    That is a beautiful camera! Have you tried any color film yet?

    • @mike.thomas
      @mike.thomas  8 років тому

      No, not yet. I'm going to spend some time practicing with B&W first. I'd have to send out the color film for processing, and that seems like a pain. However, I do have some Ektar and chrome film in the fridge for special occasions :-).

      Hehe. It's both -- they're cheaper, and you make more. At least that's the case with me. I could never dream of owning this gear when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s.

      I envy you your Metric! Regarding fall, rear rise == front fall and front rise == rear fall, so I've not found it to be a problem in practice. I use the rear for movements about 75% of the time except for the obvious front rise case.
