Many Thanks for your video. Following your instructions, I have changed the screen of my Roland JD990 and refurbished all my SR- JV80 Expansion boards with new capacitors. Everything came out as expected.

I own 2 JD990's which I've bought once new. (incl Vintage & Orchestral Exp) From all the synths I've owned and sold over the 30 past years (quite some exotics like M12, Wave2.3, and many more) they are the only ones I will never sell. And I repeat NEVER. Alongside the Jupiter 8, the JD990 is simply the best (sounding) digital synth Roland has ever made. It is a true WONDER machine that reproduces awesome sounds on condition you know how to handle and program it. Hard to find and becomes more and more expensive. A good alternative is the JV2080, almost similar (also to program) but 32 Khz.

@ sK3LeTvM1… I agree the JD-990 is simply awesome. I too am fortunate to have some coveted vintage classics, and have also been a close follower of Roland's better creations going back to the 80s. In fact my favorite synths over all are my MKS- series analogs (2-80s, a 70, and a 30), and my mint JD-800 and JD-990s. I'm a bit surprised at times how little known and under-appreciated the JD-990 is… that might be in part because I'm older now and was around when this model of synth was new & current. For the price they can be purchased now, they represent an amazing value in an incredible sounding machine. As a side note, I will say the inclusion of 8 audio outputs (4 stereo pair) seems like an odd choice for this module given the polyphony restriction… would have been more useful on some other Roland products.

Just got my white on black display. Only issue i had was the mounting screws for the display. mine were so tight, my screws were starting to strip. i recommend that once you get the older display off, use a 5.5mm socket to get the brass double sided mounting nuts off. thanks for the video!

I just followed it to replace my JD990 display - the hardest part is getting the screws off the display raisers - they are very tight, so finding a screwdriver that lets you get enough torque, but with a small enough head, was the tricky part! Thanks again though, you gave me the confidence to tackle this on my own

Well the Black screen is in and i used tiny dots of gasket sealer to bed the screen in went relay well. Capacitor done, came off ok and new one on nicely but i almost put it to close the the hole but just got away with it and the board fitted back in. Happy JD990 with lovely black screen. Thanks for the tips.

Higher voltage isn't an issue, as long as it's not something crazy different. Capacitance has to be the same.

I want to say how fortunate I feel to have stumbled upon this vid late last night. I have (4) JD-990… 3 of them have the 04 Vintage synth board installed. The 4th JD unit is a bit "scruffy" cosmetically and I got it for an amazingly low price from a local musician looking to dump it for some quick cash… I'll be selling this unit.
Anyway… my 3 JDs' displays are still working fine, but i will be upgrading to the displays you've now turned me onto. I've gotten in contact with Matt who is Steven's associate. Matt tells me he runs the store on "Reverb", and Steven runs the eBay store.
WAY more important to me though was the heads-up i got from you regarding the capacitor on the expansion boards. HOLY SHIT! I had NO IDEA that disastrous surprise was likely just around the bend for me. SO glad to know about this BEFORE any/all of my 3 expansion boards are rendered useless.
In the video (which i believe i watched carefully) you say "should be replaced with another capacitor"… if i missed it i apologize, but could you please name the specifics of the capacitor replacement for the expansion board? I want to make this mod ASAP before any of these boards get ruined.
    btw… I subscribed to your vids… thanks.

I'm getting Steven's displays for my (2) Roland A-50, Wavestation A/D, and Yamaha TG-77 to start with. All the pixels are still active on my JD-990s and quite readable, so those replacements will come a bit later for me. I've viewed photos of the white on Black display installed in a Kurzweil K2000R on their "Reverb" store front. I can already tell you I prefer the blue… blue is "happy" and calming. The white on black is kind of "clinical". Thank you for the heads-up on that though :-)

Are there any other displays that will work for the 990? I am fortunate, my display is good, however the new LED displays are quite an improvement over the back-lite. Late last night I replaced the screen with a modern LED on my JV-880 - which is similar to the install here.

Again, great video. This time I'd like to ask about the failed firmware update. I've updated a couple of my older synths with newer firmware on ICs. Never had an issue. You didn't address the failure in the vid. Can you tell us if you were able to isolate the problem? Seems odd that it would boot up and display the correct ROM version, yet stall/hang on normal boot-up.

I have installed the Super Editor for the JD-990 (ctrlr.org/roland-jd990-super-editor/) and not able to see the JD-990 however all the synths which have a USB driver show up in the list of connected devices for both MIDI in and out. Please advice. I am using the M8 from MIDI Solutions. The one out from the M8 is going to the MIDI in into the JD-990. I tried bypassing and connecting the MIDI in and MIDI out directly to my USB to PC adapter, still nothing shows up in that app. I am able, using the M8, to control my rack modules from any Keyboard.

    • @MyDeepGuide

I have no idea, it really depends on what your specific case might be. Do you know if the display ever worked? A line across can be a broken display, or a faulty display connection or so many other things. I can't diagnose it for you, sorry.

Well, then I can't help you, because it can be anything. You can test if the synth produces sound by pressing the volume button. That is how you audition sounds, and the big dial is to flip through presets. So that would be a starting point to see if the synth is alive or not. After that, you have to trace and troubleshoot on your own. Good luck! I hope you get it to work and serve you well :)

@@MyDeepGuide V nice job on the screen, where was it from?
FWIW I found that those chip-removal tweezers tend to twist much too easily, and have a better ROM removal tip: bend a small, old flat-head screwdriver 90deg at the head (leaving it shaped like a garden hoe), and insert the blade between the end of the ROM and its socket, then gently lever it, working each end of the ROM out gradually. This exerts no undue stress on the PCB - it only prises the ROM from the socket - and does not require much space (only some vertical clearance).
