  • Kyle and Alyssa road trip the Model 3 Performance from Raleigh to Marco Island. Another typical Out of Spec EV road trip! This was one of the worst... The traffic was absolutely brutal, so many accidents, and Savannah Supercharger was being Savannah. Tesla please give us V3s on I-95! No excuse at this point...

    Sweet mother of goodness. I have a Model 3 performance that I bought new a couple months ago and just completed an AL to TX back to AL road trip that was 1500 miles long. 2 people, probably 200+lbs of luggage, rain, and 80+mph on roads (TX has fast speed limits), and I got 250-260 miles on a charge at highway speeds over the course of the trip. The trip was 95%+ highway. ~268 wh/mile average. How are you over 300+ wh/mi? Wow. I do run tire pressure at 48PSI, but shouldn’t be that much difference.
    I like seeing the traffic cones. I like knowing my car sees them in roadwork zones and it has helped me out when reversing near them in multiple scenarios. It does not use any more computational power to display them. Autopilot has to see them and process their existence whether or not they’re displayed. The few pixels shown on the center screen aren’t using *any* more power than if they were not displayed. They are vector-based images, which, in the case of the center display, means that if they are not shown, they’re just replaced with a vector image of a dark spot. In other words, the blank space around the car on each side of the lane is a vector image in the same way that the traffic cone display is, so to the computer a vector image is displayed whether or not it appears as a cone. The autopilot system still sees and processes the cone whether or not it’s displayed for the car to avoid them and that is what uses the computational power.

    • @ronb4633
      @ronb4633 4 роки тому

      May I ask what you mean by highway speeds. Following the posted speed limit or? Kyle has a radar detector mounted in his windshield for a reason I think.
      Also 48psi is certainly a bit high over the 42-45 recommend range but I understand that. I wouldn't want to do that is this bad rain though.

      Especially if you live in a cold part of the country. Then batteries are even worse charge times. Plus their whole trip is filled with planning and worrying about where and how long to charge. • @dougowt

      Collin it’s not all about planning and there’s little to worry about. The video is just trying to give you a very thorough explanation of what and why they do things. And you may wish to take the same trip differently. It’s also one of the worst times to travel on one of the worst routes. The vast majority of journeys you wouldn’t think twice. You’d load up, put in your route and go. And when you do stop, you often meet interesting people and I’ve made a few friends along the way. I would find going to a filling station a pain these days, especially on my commute.

  • @RubenKelevra
    @RubenKelevra 4 роки тому +1

    Love your rant about the missing charging capacity, but I guess you're looking too narrow.
    They obviously have trouble to ramp up the production of the V3 components, but have already a good running production of the V2 components. They are installing V3 superchargers, for example in the trans canada highway, which had zero superchargers before.
    I think the issue with building new locations is, you need to find a place, rent the space, get proper electrical connections for like 1 MW installed by the grid company and then you can start doing the construction work.
    Extending a V1 supercharger a bit on the other hand doesn't require any of the steps before, but offer the same amenities for the drivers. Since you don't install an electrical connection exactly to the needs you can probably get away to draw some more power from the grid. This way you can get more throughput to the supercharger network without a long lead time.
    I think they currently install as fast as they can, and the paperwork and third party companies have trouble to keep up the pace - since money isn't really an issue, after so many new cars have been sold.

    Great video Kyle and Alyssa. I am impressed you got this video up so quickly. I have driven down from Toronto to FL on 3 occasions last year. It is nice to see how these SC are holding up. Tomorrow I am going to fly down but initially I was up to drive as I find the experience to be not as bad as people think. I have an older MS so I won't be able to experience the higher charge rates. You are lucky to have a newer car.

    The last time I did that drive for Christmas (from VA), the bottom half of NC and ALL of SC was a traffic jam. The last 40 miles of SC took 2 hours. ALL of that needs to be 3 lanes.

    Mine did the same 'freaking out' a few times Dec24 on just a 60km run to a newish 250Kw SC. The weather was foggy and the wipers went ballistic. Yet the windshield was clear. The sky looked a monotone grey so that's likely why AP flipped out. I am starting to think the AI needs more visualisations or to coordinate better with the radar & all cameras for a consensus on the weather.

    I go through Florence, SC a few times a year on the way to my parents on the NC coast (from ATL)...I too am amazed at how unused it is. The location is right off 95, and I have never seen more than about 5 stalls used. Now, one you didn't visit on this trip (but mentioned the town) is in Greenville, SC. That only has 8, and it is frequently very full.

    Ever try RainX on the front window to save power for the wipers? I do and do not own a Tesla yet. We are waiting until one of our cars is used up. (10 years at least hopefully).
    More importantly, I wonder if you could put RainX on the cameras to keep them working in weather? I have not tried it on the cameras on my Pilot, but I will.

      The power draw is tiny for the wipers compared to everything else but yes, I just haven’t detailed this car and done my usual new car process. Been on the go too much!

      I have a busy career and side business that requires a lot of traveling and planning. This is for people who need something extra to do. When I drive my vehicle for a vacation, I want to free of this kind of nonsense. I also don’t want it to take 4 hours longer!

    • @FluffyWolfMan
      @FluffyWolfMan 4 роки тому

      @@billm47645 There are many factors to this video. The guy said this was literally on Christmas eve which is one of the most busy days of the year while driving. Also they counted 14-15 wrecks throughout their whole trip, they said that they do charging differently, and they had to wait in line at a charging station for 20 mins ( which he said it was the first time they ever had to wait and it was because it was Christmas eve). If you check with google maps this drive is normally 12.5 hours with a traditional gasoline vehicle WITHOUT any stops. I have made plenty of 13hour drives in a gas vehicle and i have had to make multiple 30min stops along the way. It took them 14 hours to complete this drive with all the stops included. There is maybe a 30 minute difference in this trip between a gas vehicle and this Tesla.

    Come on Cybertrk and V3 can't get here fast enough. One thing I observed from your video and it reenforced my go-to travel plan is to travel at night and sleep in the day like working the night shift, less competition for SC stalls and less traffic on the road.

    The I-95 corridor is all V2. V1 are the early unlit stalls that provide about 110 kW. I don’t think there are any V1 stalls remaining in the US. Savannah was originally V1 back in the day. It’s definitely due for a V3 upgrade or even an expansion now.
    V2 got an upgrade last year increasing speed from 120 kW to 150 kW on almost all with a few exceptions.

    the traffic cones displayed on the screen is realistically not a bad idea because it tells the computer when it travelling through a potential construction zone. This basically tells the car to travel carefully when its in autopilot. Also it helps people that cant see very well while travelling at night.

    Nice video! My 2018 P3D (PUP) made to to Ocala Florida from a 100% charge at Savannah. I had 6% SoC remaining when I arrived at the Ocala Florida Supercharger. I’m going to see how my range compares making the same run in April with my new 19” Tesla Gemini wheels with PS4S on them. Oh and you should have your Wh/mi tab open and give efficiency updates during your return trip! Enjoy your vacation and have a safe trip back.
