I knew lagunitas would kill the sweetness and throw in too many hops. God forbid they just brew Heineken’s recipe or, better yet, go back to the original. I get it... I understand they want to get their hipster client base to drink it, but they just alienated the actual fans of this beer.
Agreed... The Lagunitas version really sucks, it tastes so bad, tastes totally different, it is so bitter, gave me a headache after one bottle, I thought I bought a bad spoiled batch, then read Lagunitas on the label, this absolutely sucks, I am taking it back to BevMo to get my money back, or trade for the older version, since they still had a couple left, this is a very sad day, Newcastle used to be my favorite tasting beer, just the right amount of sweetness, hint of chocolate with hazelnut taste, I used to buy it for all the special occasions, but not anymore.
I got introduced to the old Newcastle beer in China last weekend. A random-ass bar had 2 boxes of 24 bottles left in stock and the owner said he wanted to get rid of it. So me and my buddy drank the first box, got drunk, and i took the other box home. This has been the best beer I've tasted in a long time and it saddens me to realize they switched brewery.
If you end up home brewing it, please please please, let me know. I feel the same way about castle...they killed a unicorn...
if we homebrew it I'm sure we'll film it. in the meantime, I'm down to my final case of newkie brown and thinking of filming a review of alternatives.
@@christiansass I don't think there is an "alternative" but if you find something to fill the void that newcastle is leaving, I'll be boosting their sales lol
ill film my trying Turbodog side by side with the last of my newcastle... trying to see if there are others to add to that video
@@christiansass I found that 1554 by new Belgium was somewhat comparable
@@ryanmead9945Mead I've had that but it's not really a Brown English. More chocolaty if I remember right.
The universe smiled upon me today! I stumbled across a case of the real one and only by surprise at a gas station. Doubtful i can stretch it out for the rest of my days, so I'll just have to finish it off this weekend. Going to see a man about a dog...
New castle has been my favorite beer for decades
Stopped at the gas station after work today. Hadn't drank a New Castle in a while, picked up a 6 pack. "Oh, they redesigned the packaging. Huh, brown bottle..."
First sip, "crap, must be old"
Second sip, "wait, this is New Castle, isn't it? Lagunitas?!"
Third sip, "This is disgusting"
Fourth sip...poured it down the sink
Seriously, they ruined this beer forever. People used to ask my favorite beer and I almost always said New Castle. I thought it tasted a little different when Heineken started brewing it, but it was still similar. This is just nasty.
Absolutely ruined. Lagunitas may as well have pissed in a brown bottle, added a ton of hops, slapped a blue star on it and called it Newcastle. Oh wait, they did. The one and only is dead.

@@Edward-yf3hp well today was the day. I drank the last of my Heineken Newcastle stash. 30 years drinking this fine ale. Sadly my last newkie broon tasted like tears. So long old friend, you were the one and only.
FU lagunitas, I'll never spend a single dollar on your piss brews.
@@grim782 Oh I weep for you, my friend, I have 7 left of two 12 packs I bought 2 weeks ago that I am literally nursing and milking for as long as we can, when we get to the last two, we are thinking about doing a ceremonial tribute ending one of the best known legacies gifted to mankind, it will truly be a sad sad day :((
Loved Newcastle.....now it is a generic American brown ale that you taste everywhere.
God, its like New Coke all over again, except this time i dont see a happy ending where they bring back the old one. #ClassicNewCastleBrownAle
Only been drinking for a couple of years now. I am not a fan of hoppy beer more prefer malt-forward beers. I like amber ales a lot. I really full sail amber, but because of the state that I'm in, and t is at 6%. I have bought at the state liquor store and added more tax and stuff; I would spend about $20 on a 6 pack. Lucky, I only drink like once a month or so. But I was at the grocery store saw it decided let try this one. The malt-forward craft I had is better, but I didn't think it was terrible or super hoppy compared to a lot of beers I had that were super hoppy or Floral. So for cheap beers, I go for it. Now I never had old school one or the u.k. one, so I can't say the other is better, but it is terrible or hoppy.
What a shame. Sounds like the really screwed up the beer.
@@christiansass that really sucks. I love new castle. Great video production.
I tried it for the first time last night. I kept thinking where are the old smells. The taste left me flat. I won't be purchasing this again!
One would think that professionals could get it correct, so much for that line of thought.

im only 19 so only drinked the new kind of new castle but i love the taste of it :)
Newcastle brown ale is always drunk out of a half pint glass in Newcastle, never ever from a pint glass !
Guys, my heart is broken tonight. Just found out Newcastle is dead.. Is there a way to still get the orignal somehow?
Abita Turbodog is a malty sweet Brown Ale. Give it a try.
Awesome I'll definitely look it up. maybe I'll even compare it to the last of the Newcastle
I never had it the uk version I just bought a 12pk of Newcastle Brown ale us Version made in pelaluma ca 12pack 7.99+ tax total 8.83 here where I live in phx az
I use to drink New castle all the time until I tried the new version it sucks!! Put it back the way it was!!
The sad part is Heneiken owns Lagunitas...
Ruined it completely!

I agree. One of the big reasons why I like the classic is because it never gave me any hangover. The new stuff did! I will never be buying it again unless they go back to classic
Plz bring the original newcastle plz
Loved Newcastle for years and years, but I stopped because I thought my taste buds changed. They didn't. The changed the beer. Newcastle is not supposed to be hoppy. It's supposed to be sweet. This is like swapping out Mick Jagger with Justin Bieber and still calling the band the Rolling Stones. Call this beer anything but Newcastle.
The sad truth is that not enough people actually bought Newcastle. The sales have fallen off drastically over the last 15 years and as a Heineken brand the upper brass at Heineken decided to try something different. I can sympathize with everyone who loves Newcastle...truth is that beer has actually changed in taste and profile a few times before Lagunitas tweaked the recipe.
the reviews on here are laughable at best. the Lagunitas brewed Newcastle is a great brown ale that will probably bring in new younger beer enthusiasts to the beer. It’s a shame too lose the diehard fans......but old Newcastle wasn’t gaining any new followers.
They should have done more marketing for the classic instead of changing it
The truth is there's no new demand for any brown ale out there right now. All Heineken did is piss off and alienate the people who loved Newcastle in a futile attempt to chase people that couldn't care less about the brand. Coke made the same mistake with New Coke and Pepsi did the same with Diet Pepsi. Both reverted to their old recipies in the end, as I'm sure Newcastle will eventually.
I agree, if you call it Newcastle, that is what the bottle should contain. The new recipe ruined the brand for me. Bought a couple 12 packs figuring the packaging had just changed. I was so wrong! Told the wife don't bother to bring that stuff home again. Lost another of the faithful here.
I think its the closest thing to what it was.. although im still hunting. I think they should release a clone and call it Oldastle
Loved Newcastle, HATE Lagunitas Newcastle. I will never buy their beer, they killed my favorite!
No.
God, they ruined it!
Why couldn't they just leave the classic alone? This new stuff SUCKS. If I wanted an American ale, I WOULD BUY ONE. This is not supposed to be one though.
Lagunitas ruined Newcastle. So long sweet friend.
Everyone should send in a complaint to their local grocery store and ask them to stop selling this fake Chicago liquid turd.
Abita Turbodog is a malty sweet Brown Ale. Give it a try.
Official Response from Lagunitas:
"By design, the new recipe tastes different and introduces new flavor notes, creating a fresh take on a classic. We know it might not be for everyone and are bummed that you are disappointed. Thanks again for the feedback and perspective. Cheers"
Such a soul-less corporate response. This is NOT a "fresh take on a classic." This is Lagunitas doing one of their hops-forward brews (which taste like soap to me) and trying to get mileage out of it by stealing a classic brand. Everyone involved in this fraud should be ashamed. But, given this is the era of Trump and the triumph of those who have no idea what shame means, I have no hope I will ever taste the classic Newcastle again. Will NOT purchase this swill. Will NOT purchase anything Lagunitas or Heineken bottle.
Oh yes. And if this is "by design" then you folks are knowingly perpetrating a fraud by brewing something that is NOT Newcastle yet trying to pass it off as Newcastle. Pathetic corporate liars.

"Official Response from Lagunitas: "By design, the new recipe tastes different and introduces new flavor notes".
So does a rats ass, but I don't want to taste that either!
New? what new notes? these are the same crappy IPAs they make. They took a classic and unique beer and turned it into another "run of the mill" coffee IPA
