    I wouldn't say I liked gauge charts until I saw this video. NICE!

      I had a similar view a few years ago, but I think if they are done well, they can add some visual interest along with the insights.

    I loved it. I have used a lot of the concepts to create a Gauge chart on savings vs target. I decided not to go with the 80+1 partition because I needed the precise data, and also decided to go for the 30% blank option (70% gauge), then hardcoded the 70/30 and calculated how the colors should look like.
    I had to see it multiple times to get some parts of it, however, it was totally worth it.
    One tip: it has worked for me to remove the option of panning and zooming, so your dashboard does not zoom when you touch the mouse's trackball. To do that Map >> Map Options >> [uncheck] Allow Map and Zoom. This will save you some headaches.

      You need the Excel file to visualize the numbers of dimensions, isn't it?

    Great Video! Is there a way to make a static gauge chart then? For example, I have 2 targets to compare with the current value, and I did not want any dynamic parameters.

    Samuel this is the best gauge I've ever seen on Tableau. greatly done.
    Was trying to replicate the approach with a Tableau connection to a datasource but I have no possibility to create the union with Dim no. which is building the segments and assigning an ID to them.
    Is there any way to replicate a similar logic without the usage of the external excel file? Or is there any way to remove the dynamic creation of slices (I may not need that for my project). (i.e. Through contants and calculated fields)?
    I can't get a clue.
    Thanks a lor for sharing this amazing example.

    Thanks for the enriching video. I have used your exact formulas but encounter a problem with X pointer Y pointer and angel pointer are not working correctly. The values calculated are incorrect and therefore the needle point at the wrong direction. I would appreciate if you can guide me what can be the issue

    Thank you for the video, it's great!
    My pie chart begins at the 12 o'clock position. I have checked the 4d. Division Sort calculated field and the calculation is correct. Do you have any idea why it isn't working?
    Thanks

    • @sparsonsdataviz
      @sparsonsdataviz  Рік тому

      Thank you Maëva, The first thing I would check is the the ordering of the division segments actually on the view. I'd turn on tooltips and run my cursor over the segments and make sure that the Divison No is running in sequential order from left to right, and that the largest segment is showing at the bottom in the centre. If that all checks out then the sorting has worked ok. Then if you are finding your pointer is pointing to the 12 o'clock position, then look at the "2. Angle_Pointer" calculation, and make sure everything in there is OK. I have made adjustments there in that calculation to make the pointer not begin from the 12 O'clock. Try those 2 things and see how you get on.

    Is it possible to make a dynamic dial for this? I’m working on a project where the executive team would like to see different metrics in one single dashboard. As you can imagine, the values for the dials and targets change depending on the metric. How can one achieve that?

    • @sparsonsdataviz
      @sparsonsdataviz  Рік тому

      Hi Maralis, yes this would definitely be possible. Without seeing the data structure etc, I would suggest creating a parameter that lists the available metrics to chose from and then create a calculated field that pulls in the required metric depending on the parameter selections. So something like this:
      CASE [Parameter]
      WHEN 'Metric Name 1' THEN [Metric 1]
      WHEN 'Metric Name 2' THEN [Metric 2]
      etc etc
      END
      Then use that calculated field to base the gauge build off of. That way it would then run from the parameter selection.

      @@sparsonsdataviz hi thanks so much for the feedback. Would this work with having multiple dynamic slices as well. I’m a little confused and I haven’t worked with gauges before. I would like to keep them as simple as possible. The extract also has various different types: %, integers etc.

      The Needle should be a Line mark, and so if it is becoming bigger, you must have put something on the Size marks card. Does that solve your issue?
