I own 28 mm 1.8g The thing is crazy sharp. It accounts for at least 50% of my photography.
I own the 28mm F1.8g and it's about 40% of my photos. the 1.8g series spanks all their F1.4g line.
28mm on DX is a fine focal, good for environmental portraitures
The Nikon 28mm 1.8 is very appealing for Street if you appreciate the images produced by the popular and discrete Ricoh GRII (28mm F2.8). 20mm 1.8 is absolutely incredible on my D750.
When I shot DX, I had a Sigma 20mm f/1.8. LOVED the 20mm (FX) FOV with a DX body.
With FX, I love walking with a 28mm f/1.8 and a 100mm f/2.8, as I typically shoot very early in the AM or very late at night.
The 28mm 2.8 AIS is the sharpest 28mm by far, and is a great deal if you dont mind manual focus

I'm interested in getting a used 28 1.8g or 35 1.8g ED or 35 f2d to complement my 50 1.8g and 85 1.8g. (for FX use)
In looking at reviews and online comments of all the lenses I noticed the 28 1.8g is fairly regularly said to have focus shift and field curvature issues, but is otherwise a good lens. Have you found any examples of this in your experience with the lens or heard of these reports? Photography life and Cameralabs raise such issues for example. Or is it so minor it's not noticeable in normal use? Other than that, the 35 f2d gets a bit of a bad wrap for needing to be stopped down a fair bit to get a sharp image across the frame, but it's the cheapest and sounds like a solid buy and performer too. The 35 1.8g is the most expensive where I am second hand. Any thoughts on the above, particularly the issues mentioned about the 28? Thanks!
Thanks for the review of these lenses. But I disagree in your statement about the 20mm f/1.8 on a DX camera. This lens works like a 30mm which is great for interiors. I have run several test with that lens Vs other ones (on a D7200) and the quality of the pictures of the 20mm f/1.8 is better.Thanks again!

Well I was going to pull trigger on getting 35mm f/2D but decided to go back to the 28 1.8G because I found I use that 50mm 1.8G a lot and 35mm just not different enough and 24mm 1.8G has more distortion and not as sharp wide open as the 28mm 1.8G. I do like the 85mm 1.8G, mostly because its sharp and its light weight. I mostly like the 1.8 series because I like light lenes for walk around. I only own one 1.4 lens my Zeiss 50mm for special projects.
hey guys. I know more about microcontrast than anyone and i will tell you that the sigma 20mm 1.4 is BY FAR the best 20mm lens to get.

lol! I love my old 28mm f1.4D. it was brilliant on the D2H / D200 but I brought it w/ me from F4E F5 film so it's what I had. For me, it's a comfortable close corridors, up close and personal but to feel part of the scene. In flight aircraft or sailing so you don't have to feel like a spider against a back wall to get the shot. hehe. It felt as sharp at it's f1.4 as my 20-35 f2.8D was wide open. Had the feel of a 45mm on DX. but I hear you. If I was buying now, I'd sure look at the G lenses. I was looking into the 24mm f1.4G.

Ken I'm confused on which to pick up Nikon 20mm 1.8 or Nikon 24mm 1.8? Will be mounted on a D3 and shooting architectural work. Which is best over all?

Thanks for your awesome quality reviews! Which version of nikkor 20mm f1.8G do I need if I want to mount it on my fullframe canon 5d mark III? Will the focal length then still be 20mm once mounted? I live in Sweden and have only found the ED version.
I owned a D700 and owned both 35mm 1.8G FX and 28mm 1.8G FX and looking to sell the 28mm because I'm more of a 35mm shooter. What do you recommend, 24 or 20 1.8G? I'm just a hobbyist, taking travel photos and family events, weddings etc. I'm not a wildlife, sports or studio photographer.
Worth buying the 24mm if you've already got the 12-24? Is it that much better?? (For dx)

I'm pretty surprised how close this 28 1.8 can focus and the sharpness wide open is impressive. Glad I didn't waste money on that poopie 28 2.8D hahaha.

Definitely agree with the 35 f/2D, I loved that lens but since I also liked my 50 1.8G and they were too close to my liking which is why I got the 28 1.8G which I felt would benefit me more for my style of shooting. I love the 28/50 combo, I can shoot anything with those two!
Your right about the 28/50 combo being a mated pair, but that little 35mm/2D is so small you can put it in your pocket. I mean look at the size of that little 35 compared to the honking huge 35mm1.4 Sigma Art which probably weighs more than Nikons 50 & 28 1.8 G lens together!

for what use???? the 18-35 is sooo lightweight and awesome, but the best wide (far better than anything Zeiss as well) is their 20mm 1.8G
both are awesome for diff reasons :/ Id use the 18 35 for more general things obviously

One thing I really like about my 20mm 1.8G is the close focus distance. You can be very creative with this lens

The 35/1.8 is soft against the 28/1.8… no contest. The 35mm only sharpens up at 2.8.

I love my d500 and paired with an f 1.8 20 mm! It produces stunning video and pictures with sharpness that doesn't come anywhere close to my Nikon 12-24 mm for video. I need a wider prime that is close to the same sharpness for video. What do you think of the 14 mm f2.8? I think the 14-24 may be too heavy. any other recommendations?

I had the nikon 24mm f1.8 used on D800 but my copy displayed an alarming amount of chromatic aberration from 1.8 all the way up to 2.8 so had to send it back. Loved the feel and the look at 1.8... was lovely. I've since started using Fuji.
I'm actually surprised you'd recommend the FX 35 1.8G. I've used that lens, and the amount of distortion and vignetting is ridiculous for $530. Distortion especially because when you go and put that image in Lightroom and correct it, it changes the compostion. I have the 35 1.8G DX on my d700 and yes it has a ton of vignetting and distortion, but I only paid $125 for it .... and to be honest, it focuses very quickly and silently, its plenty sharp and there is a good amount of micro-contrast in the images.
i dont own it, and ended up saying its the WORST…….i dont think U watched this video hehehehehehe

i use the 35 1.8g DX on D810 with 5:4 crop mode (24mp) and its just cut off 4 the corner darkness. Best value 35mm len for FX

Not trying to insult you as you clearly know more about photography than me but the 20mm is perfect for sport and find myself using it often.
whatever works is valid….im just making general statements of accuracy
Caolan Hawkins most people want to get shots close in to sportsmen, using a tele zoom. A wide lens doesn't really suit this style but it of course depends on what sport and what angle you want.
what about 20 ~24 mm equivalent for Dx , an 14 or 16 mm 1.8g for dx (to keep the cost reasonable) is the only lens that i wish had been available for my d500 . any suggestions ?

Hi, I have D7200 and i got 35mm 1.8G ED version...is there any differences in photos and in usage in general between that one and 35mm 1.8G DX version? I saw on nikon web site that ED version is made for both DX and FX cameras and 35mm 1.8g DX is just for DX camera. Is there any reason to swap that ED lens that i've got to DX version?

You mention the super high resolution of these lenses. I watched a video from Tony Northrup recently where he also elaborated about lensresolution. Is there generally a big difference in resolution between modern and old lenses?
that depends….on ultrawides yes…..at 35mm and above, NO, not generally…..but hes never really used old(ER) lenses so he doesnt have a clue

Theoria Apophasis Tony refers to the DxO site a lot. I'm not sure if that site is always trustworthy.
Ken's opinion is that DxO is worthless, and for the little experience I have ... I'ts true.

Please help: I am looking to do some street portraiture mostly (on an FX body that is), I use my 50 and 85 but would like to try some wider shots... Would I be better off with the 28 1.8g, the 35 1.8g FX (which I've heard is bad for the price but that is a better focal length than 28 I would think?) Or even the 35mm 1.8 dx (and just correct the vignette and crop in a bit)

18 35 G is amazing, very lightweight, and no it doesnt compare, but its damn awesome wide zoom which is very rare

I'm looking for a sharp wide angle prime with a nice bokeh for my D500, for urban and street photography. I have the 24 2.8 but I'm not really happy with this lens. The 24 1.4 would probably be perfect but... too expensive for me. Any suggestion?

Hey Ken...I need some expert advice for my D850. Are there any issues with the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 FX on the D850? I would be using the lens for indoor groups of people. I thought I saw in one of your videos to go with the 1.4 over the 1.8 but as you know nobody would be shooting a group at 1.4 due to the focus. It's that precise. Focusing on someone's nose at 1.4 would put the rest of their body out of focus:-) Any advice on which 35mm to consider for my new D850 would br appreciated sir.

28mm is a stretched 35mm design.
The 24mm was always the Pro choice back in the day.
Interesting. I've only owned 2 G lenses and they both sucked. But, mine were DX plastic fantastic, so I am not surprised the FX glass is better.
All my Nikkor glass now is AI-s or D, as I'm shooting B&W film on my film Nikon bodies. Digital is Fuji just now. Here's hoping for a real FM2 / DM 100th anniversary body!
some G lenses are awesome…..only 3 DX lenses are any good, and only one is great, the 17 55 DX 2.8

I don't get your reasoning here. All DX lenses are G lenses and G only means that those lenses have electronic diaphragms. The letter itself has nothing to do with the lens quality.
It represented a major departure from the many Nikkor lenses I had owned and used starting the late 1990s, most of which I liked. They looked cheap, felt cheap, and the results were terrible compared to my old lenses on the same camera body (D7100) to my eyes.
So, I made a mental connection of "G lens" and "sucks" in my mind. That was my reasoning, for what it's worth.
i can only partially agree. a lot of d lenses have very good build quality, 85 1.4D, 80-200 2.8 af d, you name it. however, some don't, like 85 1.8d, and all those 52mm-thread wide-angle prime.
And some G lenses have very good build quality (not a lot), like the 105 2.8 macro, whose lens barrel is completely made out of metal. some new lenses are plasticky, but i would say those plastic are way better than the plastic that used to make d lenses.
Regarding image quality, i still think the majority of new designs are better than the old ones. and don't generalize the quality of new lenses because of the two you owned.
