I think this scene is important for so many reasons but it was definitely what woke Serena up. Eden was the epitome of what she hoped Gilead women would be- pious, virtuous, obedient, traditional. When Eden does what a normal young girl would do (fall in love and want to run away with her boyfriend) she’s executed. Serena realizes there really is no hope for women in Gilead. Any real humanity or identity they express will be met with destruction or execution. It’s interesting the first time we see Eden is on her wedding day- a child bride to Nick, forced upon him and brainwashed into thinking it’s at all ethical. @Troll He did not say that. He said that there are some necessary measures that, while ugly, have to be put into place if the existence of humanity is at stake. Of course, Gilead is not at all a good way to do this. If we ever come to a point where we have to incentivize women into bearing more children, we are smart enough (at least I hope so) to know that putting them under constant social pressure and creating a system based on murder is not at all helpful if you want to rack up the baby count. I got a question for you. When attacked in wartime, aren't all the men levied to fight in the war, where many of them will suffer and die? Why is it okay to force men to die for their country when needed, but not to implement birth quotas if we ever face an extinction crisis? In both cases, people have to offer their bodies to the society, in order to defend it. Why is one worse than the other? Problem is; If we ever face a situation where we are threatened with extinction, systems like gilead WILL arise, and that's a fact. My guess is somewhere like China or the middle east, where the regimes are already oppresive enough to do something similar to Gilead. Do you want that? I think that if we ever get such a situation, we have to implement some kind of way to increase the birth rate drastically, in a moderate way - otherwise, we will not be able to defend ourselves against those who take the most drastic measures. If we ever face such a crisis, we WILL have to sacrifice some liberties in order to defend the general freedom of our people against those who want to take it away. We wouldn't really have a choice.

It is so interesting that the writers chose this quote for Eden's last words. It dismantles completely the philosophy of Gilead. A lot of people says that this show is anti-christianity. I do not think it is. It shows the hypocrisy that some christians or even any religious groups can have. But mainly, it shows that those people are not interested in the "Truth" but in power. Religion is not the cause it is just the tool they use.
Agree. They murdered here… which is against the teachings of Christianity. “Ye who throw the first stone should be without sin.” How many times did Jesus go purposefully to people who were being harassed and harmed to save and defend them? This is exactly the opposite of the teachings of Jesus.
There’s a scene where Serena asks Waterford (her husband) what could be more important than following the teachings of Gilead. His response? Without missing a beat: “obeying your husband”. It was never about religion or the “truth” or about serving God. It’s all about power. You’re right.
@Eva Gilead is hypocritical as a whole though. They say the carry out God's will but I think viewers have lost count on how many people have been killed under Gilead's orders and as we've seen they have no qualms about child murder here or child marriage.
Jessica Victoria Carrillo gilliad probably made sure this did not happed. Anything that would paint these two as martyrs would be detrimental to gilliad
Even the "ball and chain" part can be seen as a metaphor referencing how people sometimes jokingly but still negatively call their spouses their "ball and chain". This scene was pure art.
What is the most chilling about this scene, is that this exact scenario actually plays out till this day in some country's. Saudia Arabia for example still drowns women in their family pools for sexual relations deemed inappropriate. The thing about Handmaid's Tale that many people don't realize, is that all the punishments and restrictions are things that have had, or are currently happening to women in the world. The author of the book in which this show is based wanted to show how horrifying the world can be to women.
Sue Meriah No - Margaret Atwood was directly inspired by the fundamentalist Christians right in the good old US of A. In the words of some of the Irish people I know - they’re crazier than a shit house mouse. Atwood just took their beliefs and followed them to their logical conclusions. Just look at the shite guys in the states - like the attorney general Barr and Erik Prince with his Blackwater mercenaries. Some people call them Christian Dominionists. There’s another name for them too. Christo-Fascists. And THIS is exactly what they want - to turn america into a theocracy.
@@siobhanofarrell4646 there is nothing Christian about what those people are doing. Stop calling them Christians it's not that hard. I wish y'all respect christianity as much as y'all respect islam.
Lol what a liar. I’m a Saudi woman. Yes relationships before marriage are not acceptable in our society because they might lead to adultery and pregnancy “which often happens in your degenerate society” but no man kills his daughter for that and if it happens he gets public execution. Also, alot of couples marry after long “pure” relationships without sexual contact and it’s not a big issue in our society
Does anyone think there is any symbolic meaning the positioning of Eden and Isaac's bodies at 2:10? He falls below her and of course, it could be because of the chain, but it kind of looked like he fell into the position of a proposing (as in engagement) man. Since most marriages and Gilead seem to be arranged, proposing and choosing your partner wouldn't be a thing. They rebelled against the system by choosing each other, could their positioning be another form of rebellion even in death? Any other interpretations (if any)?
Svante Faron nah im pretty sure its just to signify that he is dead, only live humans (as in with air still in their lungs) can float. Once you expel the air/lungs fill up with water you sink
Perhaps. What makes this show so captivating is the way th writers and directors masterfully utilize every frame and scene to their full potential. Symbolism is especially commonly so can't help but search for hidden messages in such climactic (and heartbreaking!) scenes like this one!
Seems worth looking into. Also noticed how the dark tiles behind them looked like Crosses. Probably just coincidental, but jeeze if it's intentional, then the attention to *every* detail in this show is crazy. Another thing I noticed is that there are several other kettle bells. If others were drowned here, would it be for "crimes" of the same degree? If that is the case, then maybe Gilead really isn't moved by this one couple's martyr. S o m a n y q u e s t i o n s
I love the shots of them being pushed into the pool, not for sadistic reasons but for film ones. They don't look scared or anything.Even though they are pushed, they look as if they are diving in willingly when the fall into together hands first, like regular partner divers would. It's so symbolic of their love for each other
ronnie. og I thought the same exact thing. I thought they jumped on their own until I saw they pushed them but it looks like they’re just diving in. They don’t scream or cry out loud. They’ve accepted it and rather die than live in that place
How do you like it Serena? That's your paradise, your dreamland, right? Country full of traditional, truly religious people! Are you happy? Clap your hands with all 9 fingers! Oh, I forgot, she can't read this... :(
The problem is not in religion it's in people. Eden is also religious but can you see how her perspective is completely different than serena for exemple?
She is an amazing actress, the way she cried when she realized Nick didn't love her, I couldn't unsee Cassie from euphoria crying in the bathroom drunk with Nick while Masdy trying to break the door down 😂
The only thing that's unrealistic about the acting in this scene is the calmness in their faces as they're drowning. In reality, drowning is very painful and torturous. It's one of the worst ways to go. The corpses of people who have drowned always have faces of pure terror. With real victims of drowning, you can see how much they suffered.
This scene is acted so well, every second is packed with emotion. Even the priest sounds as if he’s going to cry the last time he said renounce your sins and plead for his mercy
I loved June’s eye-roll when Eden started quoting scripture before she died. Like, this is what got you killed, how could you waste your last words reciting their brainwashing? Not being dismissive, but genuinely wanting better for another young woman. Tremendous acting.

It strikes me as satirical that this is being done in a school swimming pool. Gilead wouldn’t even build new facilities for their “new world”. They were fine with the old one, they just wanted the power to say and do what they want, no matter how fake or ridiculous it was
I felt so bad for Eden. What a truly sweet, heartbroken girl just trying to love. She looked like an angel floating above her ball and chain in that pool and I could not stop crying.
Could has nothing to do with it... It WOULD be Nicole standing up there one day. Any little thing a woman did gets them killed. Nicole wouldn't make it to 20 in Gilead and neither will Hanna if Offred doesn't get her out.

This was so beautifully tragic. They died as martyrs and their deaths would definitely be a some sort of turning point in the minds of Gilead's people.
Death is only meaningful if others know about it. Gilead chooses what information the people hear and see. In the end, her death will only affect the people in the room. And it won't urge most of them to fight for freedom. For her mother and sister, they will bind tighter to the laws and restrictions out of fear. Unfortunately, her death is meaningless. She is another statistic.
This scene gives me chills. It is awful. She is so young. She could have a had a whole life, but instead this society has decided to kill her. Forcing people to watch as she slowly drowns next to somebody she cares for. This is such a damaging scene and it really woke up people like Serena to the harsh reality of what they live in. Serena always victimised herself (she had every right to feel oppressed, she was, however she did bring it upon herself), but this helped her realise what the America she created looked like for less fortunate women. Women getting taped, children being married off at such a young age, lesbians being killed, children being killed. It’s such a powerful message about society as we know it, and how we will soon destroy ourselves. We are going backwards in time already, and this Sven is the perfect highlight about how messed up society can be
She was so young and all she wanted was to feel loved but she was forced into a marriage and then Nick having no feelings for her made her feel even worse.
I remember seeing this clip but now having seen this episode, I came back here. Eden was a beautiful, wholesome child and yes, she was a child! Also Serena's expressions hit me so hard. I have found it so ironic that Serena was at the forefront of the Gilead movement and wrote a book but then she got no access in the higher authority for the movement AND reading got banned in Gilead. There's a phrase in Urdu that describes this situation 'اپنے پاؤ ں پہ کلہاڑی مارنا' which literally translates to 'To hit your foot with an axe' which just basically means Serena messed up things for other women as we already know BUT she also messed up things for herself but she didn't realize it then.
I love that she was named Eden...the Garden of Eden is where Adam and Eve first sinned, and were tempted to do so...Eden in Handmaid’s tale diverts from the strict path Gilead has for her (by running away with Isaac), and she falls, just like Eve. Also what a juxtaposition: the Garden of Eden vs. Gilead. Couldn’t be more opposite. And Gilead killed Eden. This feels allegorical.
One of the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole series. The fact that she recites these particular verses of the Bible makes it even more devastating.
I’m an atheist. But even I believe in that quote. And I love eden for saying it! Was a horrible scene but a reminder that religion isn’t always peaceful.
I have to say I dislike when people say that. It’s an action and would not exist if religion hasn’t made it occur. Anyways. Let’s civility agree to disagree because I’ve fought about this endlessly with people. There is no point in wasting energy on that. .
@@coconutsciencegirl9232 I disagree. People use religion to do bad stuff that doesn't make the beliefth bad. It has power but people use it wrongly. It is not God's fault humans are evil.
Everyone crying for Eden is actually showing that they all love her because she is a pure angel. She has no feature to hate about. They all know it inside that killing an innocent child is not normal. She just made a mistake, she just wanted to be loved. The system is considering her as an adult and not forgiving anyone who did a single mistake. All resulting in execution. So the scene makes us realise how the system is fucked up.
@@perchlarkin Innocent yes. She was brainwashed into a fucked up reality and did what she thought was right for herself and the man she loved. If she wasn't living in a dictature, she wouldn't have been punished for liking a boy.
Scarier than this scene is the comments section advocating Gilead as a near perfect society.. It is truly chilling to read that there are people who believe that Gileadean principles should be upheld..
In this case, a lot of people think it's 'just' when cheaters get their 'just desserts'. You'll hear some say they deserve to die for cheating. I don't give a damn that someone cheated, they shouldn't be hurt.
Also people from similar religions here, saying "but my religion is different" - no, Gilead can be any religion/ideology in the world, that's the whole point.
If you re-watch the pilot, you see Eden as a young girl (probably 10) in a pink dress. Then 5 years later she’s considered an adult, placed with a man, and eventually drowned. So sad but great storytelling.
Anyone in Gilead: **farts out of turn** >fingers cut, eyes stabbed, hanged, thrown into swimming pool and cancelled on twitter Offred: **attempts 7th terrorist act** >"yOu ArE LuCkY ThE CoMmaNdEr iS MeRciFuL" This is the thickest plot armor I've ever seen.
Well she was pregnant for most of season 2 and she still has working ovaries so they are much “nicer” to her. And well she’s the main character so obviously she’s not gonna get killed
🤣🤣🤣🤣 yes. I got so annoyed with her doing outlandish things and not doing what she should Gave up on this show a while ago. Maybe one day I'll binge them all but she got so tiring to watch
@@belindahart8496 I think it was a small mistake that they tried to execute Janine in Series 1. If they had kept her alive (punishing her another way), then June's 'plot armour' wouldn't be an issue.
I find it interesting/metaphoric that in Offred giving knowledge of the old world (free love/choosing who we love) that she lost Eden All like the orginal story of Eden. Man and woman were made for one another yet through the woman gaining knowledge and teaching man were they casted out. Eden gained knowledge of the old world, of the hope that was love and freedom then passed it onto Issac. Both were then punished and casted out.
Adam and Eve were caste out of Eden because they had sex with Satan, referred to metaphorically as the "tree" of the knowledge of good and evil (playing off the metaphor of God being the "Tree of Life"). They were BOTH mentally and spiritually corrupted, and that's why God caste them out. Not because Eve was learning calculus or someshit.
Mesmer ASMR you are very very sick. Satan has no body, how can you have a sex with the SPIRIT? Stop your fantasies and visit your doctor, you're illness is going worst
They were cast out because they disobeyed God's one rule. Not just because of gaining knowledge. Eve was deceived by Satan and foolishly convinced Adam to follow along, even though he knew better as well. They both disobeyed, so they were both cast out.
Drowning is one of THE MOST painful ways to die. The air is right above your head, you cant reach it. You start panicking for air, the air in your lungs soon runs out, you panic. You cant hold it in, and that's when the water comes into your lungs. What a sad sad scene.
This is one of the strongest moments in the entire story. She is faced with her execution and she she says a passage from the bible. Eden was the ultimate victim of Giliad. She showed them with her final words
Eden didn't know any different life from Gilead where as June did,June can't totally understand Eden's stand cos she doesn't have her faith. It's just they are totally different.
I saw it as a mix of her going "you stupid girl" because she has been wired to survive and being utterly heartbroken and not trying to succumb to immediate guilt.
Serena reminds me of Fox News women or conservative women in general, advocating for policies that if they were to be implemented , all women including them would suffer from.
I don’t know how Eden got so much vitriol. She’s literally a child with very lofty goals of being a perfect little wife with a husband who would love her & not only was that not a reality but she also fell in love with someone else which was a crisis to her very foundation. Most adults wouldn’t be able to navigate those waters, I don’t understand how we could possibly expect a 15 year old to do so. Not blaming Nick at all bc I’m very glad he couldn’t feel love or arousal concerning her since that would have been wrong as well. That girl just deserved better in all respects.
The detail of them diving off the board together instead of letting the weights pull them down is beautiful. They are one and defiant of Gilead, in control of their own love, bodies and destiny, instead of submitting to the state. Was Isaac the best human being in the world? No. But he was also a victim of Gilead in the same way Eden was - by indoctrination. And he was who Eden chose, which is ultimately what matters in the end.
That’s McMaster University’s pool if I ever saw it! It’s often very warm in there; around 26 degrees Celsius or so. That deep end is 15 feet deep, and the high dive platform they were pushed off of is around the same height.
So strong scene.... The love quote from Corinthians was always my favourite, but now it was given another dimension... The scenes when someone starts to quote a part of the Bible which does not conform into Gilead propaganda are always amazing... Eden in this scene, June answering "and blessed are those who suffer forthe cause of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven"... It's only a pity that when they were asked to stone Janine, no one remembered John, the part stating that he who never sinned should throw the first stone... Though that scene was impressive on its own.
Crafty Courtney I think so too, but she is a teen who wanted to experience love that wasn't controlled by gillead and was difently scared of dying, but she did anyway to prove that even when gillead though they controlled everyone so much to every little detail like their sex lives, the people still have a will of their own that no one can contain.
I can just imagine if this show was someone's 1st acting gig. "Mom,dad, I got a gig. I wear red for like 2 episodes then drown in a pool, I get 400 bux from Netflix."
I can't believe that it took me so long to finally watch this show. I absolutely regret it. It was always on my list and since 3 weeks ago, me and my partner started watching it and honestly we are already in the middle of the third season. I really like. It gives you a weird feeling while watching it
the euphoria's fans in the comments are so annoying like yeah... that's cassie from euphoria... she's an actress...euphoria is not her only role...i swear they act so childish
When you first click on, it looks like a baptismal service (baptists do baptisms at swimming pools alot), but it's something else. The watery grave is literal. Then you have her quoting I Corinthians 13 about love, which is the opposite of this. How do they choose your execution method? Some are hung, stoned, and now drowned, is there any rhyme or reason?
It’s sad that people keep blaming christianity when they watch this show, when they don’t seem to realize that the religious aspect of gilead is mainly a front, it’s easier to commence such heinous acts when its in the name of god, because it takes the guilt away and makes you look better to everyone else, but this is not true christianity, and that’s coming from an agnostic person
I was kinda surprised to see Serena crying so miserably. I thought whys she crying so badly ? Was she so attached to Eden ? Then it hit me that she's crying because that's what happens to women in Gilead and that could be her daughter someday. Sooner or later. She saw the future of Nicole in Eden.

Nailed it !
YES!!
Religion can even be the cause at times
And we all thought Eden would be a snitch one day. I'm sorry, Eden 😭😭

@Eva Gilead is hypocritical as a whole though. They say the carry out God's will but I think viewers have lost count on how many people have been killed under Gilead's orders and as we've seen they have no qualms about child murder here or child marriage.

I thought the exact same thing with the proposal position
Perhaps that is what the director wanted, or prehaps it is just a lucky take

@@Alayne89 Idk. You may be right, but I think it hardens the resolve in people like June.
We are going backwards in time already, and this Sven is the perfect highlight about how messed up society can be
Serena was literally destroyed by her own creation
She was so young and all she wanted was to feel loved but she was forced into a marriage and then Nick having no feelings for her made her feel even worse.

@@riyad3320 not to mention he was pretty much forced to have sex with her because he risked being killed for being a gender traitor (gay).
The distant shot of them both dead in the water is so haunting.
Sydney was so cute here, now she’s a mega star on Euphoria. Excellent actress from the start.
One of the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole series. The fact that she recites these particular verses of the Bible makes it even more devastating.

Everyone crying for Eden is actually showing that they all love her because she is a pure angel. She has no feature to hate about. They all know it inside that killing an innocent child is not normal. She just made a mistake, she just wanted to be loved.

They were cast out because they disobeyed God's one rule. Not just because of gaining knowledge. Eve was deceived by Satan and foolishly convinced Adam to follow along, even though he knew better as well. They both disobeyed, so they were both cast out.
I think the power of this scene comes from Eden refusing to sacrifice Issac, blatantly telling Nick “ I don’t want to have your baby”
Drowning is one of THE MOST painful ways to die. The air is right above your head, you cant reach it. You start panicking for air, the air in your lungs soon runs out, you panic. You cant hold it in, and that's when the water comes into your lungs.

Their love was so pure and loyal.
When I first saw this episode, I thought 'how are they going to drown in a pool?' and then I saw the balls and chains and it suddenly made sense.

Was Isaac the best human being in the world? No. But he was also a victim of Gilead in the same way Eden was - by indoctrination. And he was who Eden chose, which is ultimately what matters in the end.

The scenes when someone starts to quote a part of the Bible which does not conform into Gilead propaganda are always amazing...

This is one of THE DARKEST shows ever made and it’s PHENOMENAL
I just realized this is Cassie from Euphoria!
if you watch this and somehow think this is a good idea; please leave. this was horrific and not something to be admired.
Even more painful would be the weights pulling your body apart before you even drown. Eek
This scene was horrible… even for the show.
I think cause she is a kid
@@dreamsteddybearsmaster she’s 15, not considered a kid in that world nor ours.
@@epicchocolate1866a 15 year old is absolutely still a child
