Evans ES-5 tape echo (1979)

New toy in the studio! an Evans "sound creator/super echo" ES-5. just cleaned, serviced, some adjustments in the inside trimmers and new longer tape (re201 tape). i put the speed pot on the front (originaly it's near the tape on the upper side of the machine, don't know why they built it like this? strange...)
now it sounds killer!!! these "moving head" tape echos are unique (like the dynacords and some H/H) , more flexible than the space echos style, much more crasy! and honestly the sound quality is the same than the RE201 (talking about the echo sound, not the preamp (dry) sound), and the Evans is much cheaper (but no spring reverb).

Do you meen 100%wet? You can do this using "from P.A." connections. Or mix dry and wet using echo volume pot.

I have a Solton Echomate E-1000 that looks to be a copy (internal and external) of this Evens. I am experiencing a wobble or wavering with long repeats. It has a re201 tap also. i was looking into cutting my own tapes as i thought the long tape maybe causing the tape not to be feed correctly. where did you get your shorter tape from and did you have any issues with the longer tape. I am also keen to know where the internal trim pots as i cannot get geed repeat feedback. thanks for any help

yes; i moved the speed pot from the upper side of the machine to the faceplate; i also changed the value of the pot but can't remember which value... anyway, very easy mod...

What is your opinion with the Roland RE201 in comparison??

IMO the 201 is a step-up and is more a "studio" gear. better electronic, better eq, spring reverb, more heads so more choice, . the evans is more "basic" but very well made and built like a tank. i bring it in live and it always work; this moving head is a terrible weapon and the echo tape sound is very very good . much better than all those chitty cardridge tape echos. the recap of the evans is very easy to do...on the 201 it's a real mess!

the only issue I can see with this is that after many hours of use the head will be worn out like fuck...
