hi, your video helped me. I changed oil on my Ford Focus MTX75 today. My car is probably slightly different, because there was more space at the drain plug, so I didnt have to unscrew the mount bracket, but it was a close one :-)
Yeah there's definitely nothing called 'lifetime oil'. When manufacturers say filled for life, "life" means till the end of the warranty. After that they don't care. I would definitely change my transmission fluid every couple of years.
Had a car from new, another member of family had it after me.148,000 miles now.Changed engine oil every 6k miles but just changed transmission now at 148k (coz he s tight) BUT engine and gearbox still sweet..!
That's good to see brother. Sounds like it's had an easy life. The idea behind changing transmission fluid on a regular basis is to make sure it will be fine when the miles get really high. Example: a trans that's on 200k plus, and has had regular fluid changes will be in a lot better shape than one with no fluid changes whatsoever. Depending on mileage per year and the type of use of course, if you can change your trans fluid every 2-3 years, you will likely never need a new transmission.
I agree,I've generally overdone oil changes.Just suprised gearbox and engine as sweet as when new with gearbox top ups to 148K.I was doing engine oil changes every 4-5K miles, but coming out really too clean at that mileage (petrol engines). So now do it around 6k,oil still brownish tint. Fortunate enough to buy new cars last 25 years, guy with my ex car above as been a good experiment to prove regular oil changes really do prolong life of engine etc. Just for interest (or not) its a 1.25 Fiesta 4 cyl.Only major bits its had are 4 suspension arms, and clutch and alternator only just gone, new battery same time.Obviously had brakes and consumables ,but it does'nt owe him anything..!
Hi Eric. Thank you as always for the great content. Would you recommend changing the transmission fluid on a ford focus with over 150,000 miles? I just purchased it and not sure of servicing history. When careful with the clutch (manual transmission) it shifts beautifully, however if I don’t release the clutch super slowly the transmission does shift hard. I’m thinking it might be low on fluid, but I’ve also read it’s not recommended to change tranny fluid after a lot of miles. Any thoughts?
Hi Juan, I would definitely change ALL fluids if you don't know the service history. Engine oil, gearbox oil, coolant even. It can't hurt, just make sure you put the right grade fluids in 👍
Had a 1990 civic that took 10W-30 for manual transmission fluid. Had a 1999 Jetta 5 speed manual that 75W-90 was WAY too heavy for. I can't even imagine putting 75W-90 in the MTX75. The Triax DCT Fluid I used is probably a bit heavier than ATF, but it seems to do just fine based on draining the factory fluid.
Josh I can confirm that 75W90 is definitely what goes in an MTX75. Or at least that's what the Ford factory manual says. I for one can't imagine an oil thin enough for an engine to be okay for a transmission, considering the speeds and pressure the gears are under. But there you go, I guess we've both learnt something new today, and I'm totally okay with that.

Great video! Wish my 2001 1.6 focus was that easy haha. I've got the IB5 gearbox which has no drain plug. So you either have to pull a drive shaft out or suck it out through the filler hole.

The user manual says that the transmission oil lasts for life. I have some suspicions about that but i can tell you that my 1.6 has about 370k km on the clock and the 1.8 has about 230k km, both with the factory equipped transmission oil and both are running all right, no transmission problems whatsoever... The swap to mtx75 would be possible only on the 1.8 zetec, wich is practically identical to the 2.0 (except, of course, the bore and stroke), but it would be very costly, since it would be necessary to swap the whole clutch, clutch slave cylinder, gearbox, gearbox mounts, driveshafts and some other bits and pieces... The 1.6 and the 1.4 zetec are quite different from the 1.8/2.0. The block is substantially smaller, the transmission is paired with the engine trough a different gearbox bell (or clutch housing, should I say?), wich doesn't fit the mtx75... It is said (by those who have tried) that the swap would bring better on circuit/track behaviour, since the mtx75 has shorter gears, but the ib5 is a better all-rounder. For example, with the ib5 transmission, you get 100 km/h in second gear @ approx 6700 rot/min, the third gear gets you to 155 km/h... The corresponding values for the mtx75 are lower - that makes the acceleration better. Another interesting fact is that some say that a swap from the 6 speed "getrag" gearbox of the st170 to the mtx75 is beneficial for a track car... Hello, I have an mk2.5 2010 ford focus with the MTX75 transmission. I've had the car for a year now and a couple of months now I noticed a very faint 'whining' noise especially in third gear and 5th gear, recently it's a bit more 'pronounced' in 5th gear in acceleration and deceleration..I heard that the alternator can whine on acceleration too if it's starting to go bad, I've changed trans fluid 2 times during the year of ownership due to changing driveshafts, could the transmission be whining? is it common? are these mtx75 known for any major problems? any help would be appreciated.
Hello Jassim, thank you for your comment 🙂 I have not had this issue so I cannot say 100% what the problem is, but these would be my suggestions... If your gearbox is whining only in 3rd or 5th gear, I don't think it will be your alternator. Your alternator would whine in any gear. Also try this: When your car is stationary and in neutral, rev the engine. If the whine gets louder then it's not your gearbox - it's probably the alternator, or the AC converter, the power steering pump, or a pulley. These are items that are attached to your engine via the accessory belt. If your whine is definitely only when the gearbox is in 3rd or 5th gear then yes, probably the gearbox has a problem... The MTX75 transmission is VERY strong... Many can manufacturers used it, and to be honest, the power in the Focus is not enough to break it. For example, his same transmission comes in the supercharged Mini Cooper S, which has a lot more power. But what can happen after many years is that the internal components of the gearbox can wear out, especially if the oil was not changed frequently. Maybe while the driveshafts were replaced, something happened?... It only takes something small to fall in and damage the gears. I'm not sure if this caused the problem but these would be my suggestions. I hope that helps you, and thank you for your comment and for watching! Good luck.
@@dan_6915 I have a 2004 1.8 16v with the iB5 gearbox,no there is no drain plug Ford say you never have to change the oil for the life of the car.So here is how to change the oil despite of what Ford say.1st locate the plastic cover that covers the gear change cables, remove the cover.Next unclip the gear change cables from the gearbox you will then see one or sometimes two fill plugs, remove the highest plug. You will need some form of a vacuum pump attached to a plastic type hose that will fit inside the fill plug.Next insert your plastic tube into the fill hole and start sucking the oil out with your vacuum pump until empty then fill until oil starts to dribble out of the fill hole, job done. One more critical thing to do,only use FORD GEAR OIL!! using anything else will result in an early gearbox failure. Hope this helps you out.
Hey Courtney, thanks for the comment 👍 You can find the silicone coolant hope kit for the Mk1 Focus here - it comes in other colors too: www.burtonpower.com/samco-red-coolant-hose-set-focus-mk1-1-8-2-0-rhd-tcs-198-c-red.html
Thanks, just looked at the price of a set of hoses, half the value of the car, unfortunate not for me, why so expensive, they do look neat, I will say.
The process is pretty easy you just gotta drop the pan and swap out the transmission filter and gasket. You'll need a ratchet and 8 mm socket with extension or deep socket. Be careful, loosening all the bolts. They only need 6 1/2 pounds of torque so they should come out easy. Last thing you want to do is snap the bolt head off. If you do snap one off, you'll need to extract the screw or drill it out and use a new bolt, washer, and nut. Be sure to use a plastic putty knife or something similar to peel off the old gasket. Be gentle with the sensor on the filter, just pull it off, and the filter can be tugged out as well. Make sure the new filter has an O-ring otherwise use the old one, but be sure to lube it with the old fluid. Screw the pan back in with a new gasket and only tighten the bolts to 6 1/2 foot pounds each.
Very important when purchasing the gear oil for this particular transmission: use GL4 oil and NOT GL5. The newer style oil has friction modifiers that will ruin your clutch. Use GL4 rated gear oil only. Trust me you will feel the difference when you shift. Ford Motorcraft synthetic manual transmission fluid is by far the best fluid for the MTX75. Use it. Yes, it costs more. But it's only 2 bottles and once every few years.
1st and 2nd hard when it's cold? The Ford MTX75 often struggles going into 1st and 2nd when it's cold outside (less than 10°c). Opie oils recommend 75w80 which helps as its a thinner oil. Ford now fill the MTX75 with just 75w (even thinner than 75w80 or the original 75w90). 👆 this saved my car from the scrapyard
Thanks for the info mate. We don't get a lot of days under 10 here so the factory spec seems to be holding up well. Good to know about the cold weather options though... 👍
Have the same with my mk2 Ford focus convertible first and second gear is hard on cold mornings I have to go third and fourth to allow first gear to be used did it completely get rid of it
@@fordy1980uk i fixed 90% of the problem. It's still slightly notchy, but almost unnoticeable. The 5 speed MTX75 Ford gearbox needs 2L of oil.... Every last drop from 2x1L bottles. Any 75w GL4 or GL5 should be good to transform going into 1st or 2nd. 75w = thinnest 75w-80 = medium 75w-90 = thicker (this was the factory fill on 5spd Ford gearboxes)
Great video, great comments on the bright coloured catch pan, Clearly you do look after your car, great job. I guess it does not meet snow ice and SALT . That helps a lot 🙂👍👍👍 thanks for a great no nonsense video.
Hi, thanks for watching, I think I know what may be causing it. When you open your doors, you will see a metal latch on the body of the car (not the door) that the door lock on the door hooks onto. Inside this metal latch, sits a plastic (black) switch. You should be able to push it inwards with your finger. This plastic switch is what tells the car if your doors are closed... when the door closes, it presses in this switch. If you have a door ajar light, it will most likely be one of these switches that has failed. You will need to replace it and the light should go away. I hope this helps, let us know if you manage to solve the problem 🙂
On my MK1 focus I have alot of play on my gear shifter. I saw in a video that the cable thats running to the underside of the engine is mounted on a metal shifting rod with a plastic part that is worn out after all these years. Did you notice the same thing and do you have a proper solution for this?
Mine seems to be okay for now so I can't say that I know much about this... maybe try asking on the Facebook Mk1 groups - I'm sure someone there will be able to help out 👍
I have the 1.6 automatic transmission gearbox mk1 what fluid would you recommend? the local shop only has the comma brand part synthetic I think. Is this any good?

The most critical thing you must do to your gearbox to prolong it's life be it an MTX75 or an iB5 is to use Ford gearbox oil only.Failure to do this results in a not so smooth gear change accompanied by excessive wear.Ford gearbox oil is expensive which is why people tend to use aftermarket oil because it's cheaper. If you intend to keep your car don't use cheaper oil, replacing your gearbox is a lot more expensive than the oil you wished you had used when the box wears out early.
Hi Bois I have little problem, because I need to change my gearbox and Im not sure with one, maybe somebody can explain to me what is difference between MTX 75 and 2S4R 7002 KA thank you. Ford Focus 2.0 16v zetec 2003 :)
Why, when I give gas, it beeps. And when I drive, the engine literally jumps, as if it is going to pop out from under the hood, and when I brake, it shuts off.. what's the problem?
That sounds very serious. It seems to me that you have many problems all at once. It is hard to tell you what the problem is without seeing your car. I would go to a mechanic straight away.
I fix it.Hose. air..behind motor..But new problem wont turn on fan coolant. And coolant get out from safeti plastic ond end of hose on radiator (I sopouse becouse it wont turn on fans) How to fast bleed air from coolant sistem ford focus zetek 1.8 petrol 1999 year? Any link..
@Space X I'll try to answer your questions, but I can't be certain that these will help as I can't see your car. I hope this helps you: To bleed air from the coolant: Take the cap off the coolant reservoir when the coolant is cold. Turn the engine on, and put your heater inside the car on to full heat, and maximum speed on the heater fans (number 4). Let the engine idle and warm up. When the engine is hot, the coolant should start circulating because the thermostat will open. When the coolant circulates, it should bleed out all the air. You will see air bubbles in the coolant reservoir. When the bubbles stop, fill up the coolant reservoir to the full level again if you have to, and put the cap back on. That should be all you need to do to get the air out. But if you have a coolant leak, obviously more air will get into the system, and you will need to repair the leak. Is the plastic hose above yoru radiator broken? If yes, watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/s-z60YJ0BmY/v-deo.html About the coolant fans not turning on, from what you have written, I am assuming that either your engine is not getting hot enough for the fans to turn on, or the fans are broken. Check on the water temp gauge on your dash inside the car to see if your car is warming up. If the water temperature gauge is below the middle, you may have a stuck open thermostat. When the engine is warm, the water temperature gauge on your dash should sit in the middle. If it's below the middle, the coolant is not warming up (check or change the thermostat). If it's above the middle, then the engine is not being cooled (check your fan and fan relays) and also change your coolant if it's old. I hope this helps 👍
Evetlrything that you wrote i generaly correct. But it stuck in the midle (temp in dash) . But after 10 mins coolant boils!! But fans not turn on...and on dash temp is on midlle?? Is it resistor on coolant refrig. Or temp sensor of water What you asumes. (Relay and fuse ok) ac runs ok fan ok. Heater in cabine warm blows

Good luck.
Penrite is Wrong , not Rite. Use the Ford oil (made by Castrol) it has specific additive package made for that trans.
Yess true! these Fords are very specific when it comes to oil or sensors.
Thanks for the tip.
from Egypt with love keep on focus mk1 please 💖
Thanks 😀 I will, more videos to come ✌️
Good for you, pal! My transmission is an IB5, with no drain plug.. (European version, "lifetime oil", Ford said so..)
Thanks a lot 😊
Does it have a refill plug at least ?
Love you job very easy to do, mechanics wheel detest you,
don't worry we love you keep up.
Thank you 😁

Great show, seems easy, I have the same engine, can I ask where you got your nice red cooling hoses from, haven't seen them before.
Hey Courtney, thanks for the comment 👍
You can find the silicone coolant hope kit for the Mk1 Focus here - it comes in other colors too:

Thanks, just looked at the price of a set of hoses, half the value of the car, unfortunate not for me, why so expensive, they do look neat, I will say.
@@courtneyroy270 they are expensive.
@@courtneyroy270 For people with too much money. Standard hoses work fine.
any video for automatic transmission?
I’m a bit confused. The clutch isn’t in contact with the fluid correct?
@@ptiscool3334 Sorry, I mean the synchronizers. My bad!
How do you know this is true?
@@kanadaijuharszirup yes, you can, as long as it's a GL4 oil in 75w
75w = thinnest
75w-80 = medium
75w-90 = thicker (this was the factory fill on 5spd Ford gearboxes)
@@steve0680657 use GL4 gear oil only. Do NOT use GL5.
@@LA_Commander doesn't matter actually.
Damn that’s a clean car
I try to look after it, thanks for noticing 😁
Great video, great comments on the bright coloured catch pan, Clearly you do look after your car, great job. I guess it does not meet snow ice and SALT . That helps a lot 🙂👍👍👍 thanks for a great no nonsense video.
Hi I have a ford focus 2003 I have a door ajar illuminated even when doors are shut. How do I sort this out? Thanks
Mine seems to be okay for now so I can't say that I know much about this... maybe try asking on the Facebook Mk1 groups - I'm sure someone there will be able to help out 👍
thank you, it's good video
Glad you liked it!
Is there coolant temp sensor on ford mk1 zetec and position..in link or so.. (not cilinder head sensor)
If yours has a cilinderhead temp sensor, dont look further because thats the only temp sensor you have on that car.
I have the 1.6 automatic transmission gearbox mk1 what fluid would you recommend? the local shop only has the comma brand part synthetic I think. Is this any good?
My local halfords shop also sells g4l in grade 75w80 would this be suitable as well?
Hello, I'm sorry but I can't recommend an oil because we didn't get the 1.6 cars here in Australia. But try this group on Facebook - they are really good people:

The most critical thing you must do to your gearbox to prolong it's life be it an MTX75 or an iB5 is to use Ford gearbox oil only.Failure to do this results in a not so smooth gear change accompanied by excessive wear.Ford gearbox oil is expensive which is why people tend to use aftermarket oil because it's cheaper. If you intend to keep your car don't use cheaper oil, replacing your gearbox is a lot more expensive than the oil you wished you had used when the box wears out early.
What makes Ford gearbox oil better?
Drag a magnetic pick-up tool through that old fluid and you'll be able to see how much actual metal is in your fluid
Good tip 👍
there's a little magnet on the drain plug, that should catch some
Always remove fill plug first, don't ask me why.
Ouch 😬

I hope this helps you:
To bleed air from the coolant:
Take the cap off the coolant reservoir when the coolant is cold.
If yes, watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/s-z60YJ0BmY/v-deo.html
About the coolant fans not turning on, from what you have written, I am assuming that either your engine is not getting hot enough for the fans to turn on, or the fans are broken.
I think it seems like emgine mounts - the front 2 should be easy to change !
You cannot compare gearbox öil with engine öil.Gearbox öil cann be changed after 100 000km.
Yes, gearbox oil lasts much longer. But it still should be changed. Some manufacturers say don't touch it - it's for life. This is not accurate.
