- Cory Wong is a funk rhythm guitarist, composer and musical “hype man.”
He records and performs with funk band Vulfpeck, bringing his guitar antics to their much-discussed live shows. The group, which releases its own music, even has a popular song titled “Cory Wong.”
Wong’s group came to KNKX studios ready to go, and his band began playing almost as soon as they walked in the door.
Wong hails from Minneapolis and began making a name for himself in 2011. He’s skilled at explaining music to non-musicians and musicians alike. He’s also lent his talents to television programs such as The Voice.
He connected with his quartet's bassist Sonny Thompson at the weekly jam hosted by Prince’s rhythm section. Thompson was in the original line-up of Prince’s New Power Generation in the '90s, helping to define the modern funk that informs Wong's music today.

Cory's guitar tone is so clean that can kill 99.9% germs
haha true
Love that Kevin is getting showcased more, usually he's a lot farther back in the mix
Yea and his playing on Radio Shack was stelar
Love the cymbal that sounds like a 909 clap
OMG! Petar is a beast.
My son and I chose to stand at the edge of the stage right in front of Petar in Seattle a few weeks ago. He is easily the most entertaining drummer that I've ever seen! The entire concert was incredible (as most of those reading these comments probably know)! See them the next time they come to town!
I'm loving that overhead camera angle during the piano solo!
Wow, they sure mixed the drums to the front. Not complaining, Petar kinda killed it.
Overhead shot of the piano is a most satisfying music visualizer.
This should be preserved for future generations to define "tight".
cory’s mic is there just to capture his laughs
Sooooo good. There's nothing flashy or overproduced either. It's just insanely good musicians with an incredible sense of time feel and blend and I love how the acoustic and electronic instruments work together. As a big, and somewhat longtime, fan, of Cory Wong and KNKX, it was such a pleasure to see this happen.
Amazing musical drumming
I love this so much! Love the focus on Kevin. He sometimes gets lost in the mix of the big band. Just great from start to finish!
I still think he's too far back in the mix. Drummer is too loud. Other than these minor complaints, everyone is phenomenal in performance.
So much to comment on, but I’ll stick with Kevin on the piano, especially that aerial view of the piano. It was mesmerizing watching the hammers (or whatever they are called) on the as he was bringing the goods. Every Cory Wong video is like food for the soul.
Love the upright piano on this session, adds a lot.
Thanks for watching and listening!
why?
Probably some of the best drumming I've heard from Petar.
Yes, AND it's certainly not his typical fat sound, but a slender, dry drum sound that suits his playing really well! 70s Headhunters vibes!
F yes on the headhunters vibe. Shades of herbie run through this band for sure.
Haha was literally about type the same thing. Very much so. Crazy hard to get that articulation that low down.
Shades of Steve Gadd and Bernard Purdie.
Petar is an absolute monster, seeing them live was a force of nature.
I really liked their vibe in this studio, felt way more casual than normal.
KNKX my beloved, thank you
KG on the upright piano! I’m getting Dave Grusin vibes here. Amazing stuff by everyone.
Don’t get me wrong - I love the whole band and the horns kill it. But this vibe feels so cozy and tight. It’s a rally cool set up and I wouldn’t mind hearing more of this quartet!
Radio shack sounds like an anime intro and that's the highest praise for American music that I could ever possibly give , I love you guys so much!!!!
It could also be a Persona intro song lol love it!
Amazing to see Cory with a small band in a more intimate place. And with the legendary Sonny Thompson, from Prince´s New Power Generation, on bass.
Thanks for watching and subscribing Gustavo!
All I can say is that it only gets better.
soooo good to hear these tunes in this low-key style and just having fun. you can tell these guys have been playing together for years.
KG killing it
3:41 best part IMO, tight groove and awesome solo, wow, I need to see this band live
You should, I saw them in London, they were incredible. Recommend Vulfpeck too if you like this (Cory Wong is a member)
I saw them in Phoenix last week and they were freaking amazing! If they come anywhere near you, or far, go!
By far the best band I've seen live. Flawless execution the whole way through and the horn section was impossibly tight
Great tight drumming and upfront in the mix too - you’re hearing what he’s hearing! Love the avant-garde cymbal too.
More bass guy and it would be perfect.
Mm! Always tasty jams coming from these guys! I'm getting some cozy holiday vibes from this mix.
Corys band gets tighter and tighter
They are all fantastic... but this mix shines a golden light on that beast of a drummer!!
radio shack is anime af, so good btw
Kevins new album is dope.
Amazing..
Those drums are so up front they sound like they’re literally inside of my head
I see a lot of people mentioning Kevin, and not without reason, but my Goodness... Petar smashed this. Loved that the drums were so well mixed in this
I love these dudes
Thanks for this thorough writeup, a comprehensive understatement of Cory Wong.
- A GenXer
+1 GenXer
this is so goooooodddd
Kevin the boss!
Wow...drummer in the pocket there!
Radio Shack is underrated. The whole band is so tight
All of you guys are such masterful musicians, it is inspiring, intimidating, and depressing all at the same time
everything is so clean and satisfying to hear
Delectable vibrations
😊 Tight!
best thing ive heard in a while
I couldnt stop staring at that melted cheese slice cymbal
I like the sound like "STUFF". I felt the first song "St.Paul" was reminiscent of that.
Need this radio shack version by itself hot DAYUM!!!!!
💯
oh hell, that was tight!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
❤️🔥
Wow the drummers cymbal is straight out of a picasso painting
Well played that drumset, Lebowski!
❤
Kevin’s B section is the Candid Camera theme
Is this live mixed? Balance seems a bit unfair hahah XD
I love the upright piano solo! So refreshing! Unfortunately it seems to be mixed a little too softly...
Ya’ll are in the pocket. Maybe next time tell your videographer to show the bass player a little more love he was killing it along with the rest of you.
Can we expect this on Spotify?
Funky gospel from the soul ;)
channeling charlie @ 3:10 😋
Some guys just got “it”!
damn
You can't find the KAWAI after this video.
"As you can hear in the interview" sez the description. I need a clue.
10:54 minute long stank face
Whoever mixed this must be a drummer lol. Like 50% louder than anything else. Not complaining cause Petar is a beast, but the guitar is like completely lost, bass too.
Cory master of music 2022, no doubt.
TIGHT drum setup and recording
6:30 do be stanky
Was this recorded with one room mic and nothing else?
The term balance means nothing to whoever mixed this. Sonny T just gets buried in the mix, and it’s like 60% drums.
Can someone please transcribe the piano solo 🤣
Like this sound much more then the sterile super compressed thing they do usually...
gtr can be a bit on front, of course...
Yea this was really a different vibe and feel to what most Cory Wong stuff us mixed. The drums could have been just lightly lower and the bass and guitar up just a bit. I tend to mix my drums a little more upfront than a lot of people myself. Everyone who produces and mixes eventually starts to hone in their ear on what defines them as a prodcuer Insuppose.
It took me 90% into the first song to figure out that the cymbal stack was responsible for that incredible/horrible clap sound. 😂
How come you guys show close ups of everyone but the bassist??
Awesome players fantastic guitar player but I don't like the thin guitar sound
Great performance, but I don't like the mix. The balances are messed up.
harsh mix dudes... I wanted to hear the whole band not just drums
Awesome selection played well! But the drums sound like sh..! why?? Also Piano is too loud.
This is the cringiest most Berklee college of music type shit I’ve ever heard in my life lmfaooooo
Jesus did the drummer mix this? Drums are way too loud or the other instruments are quiet af.
There's never too much Petar
