@@CrazyOldCanuck This wasn't the most exciting, bit it definitely wasn't boring. No need to be a dick, there aren't many boring fights over the years. There was plenty of action here, the only boring matches are the ones with no action, and not many significant strikes thrown. But a lot of you casuals think wrestling is boring, even when they get a good submission, or use lots of ground and pound. I think that ground and pound are the most exciting shots, and those big punches and elbows from full guard/full mount do the most damage. Laying down to just have control for the whole fight is boring, but most people throw big ground and pound or move for a submission once they are on the ground. You honestly just sound like a casual that only watches highlights to me, because this was a good fight overall‼️💯💪😤
Same here. The first fight I ever watched was Hughes vs Trigg 1. That’s what got me into the sport and Hughes became my favorite fighter. I hate what happened to him.
When I was a kid I never realized Hughes was so one dimensional. Exept for Judo and wrestling, it did did take the rest of the martial arts community an absurd amount of time to realize how easy it is to trip a guy.
He was strong too. But didn’t have much stand up. Even the fights he won were often chaotic back and forth fights or comebacks. So he was good at winning close fights. GSP seem like a much more complete fighter when they fought-at least the second and third time. Actually had a good jab and kicks
@@mauriciosalgadogonzalez2305 yep GSP was the superior fighter throughout those 3 fights but Hughes really capitalized off that submission. Same thing when you look at the Hughes/Penn trilogy the fight that Hughes won Penn was dominating until he got injured and Hughes capitalized.
I honestly thought that Serra won it. I don't think there's anything more he could have done. He played to his skillset perfectly and defended well when on the ground. It was surely 1 round each going into the 3rd, and I thought that counter ought to have won it. He was the least hurt, the most composed, and the most tactical. When it's a close fight, considering everything, Serra was the better fighter. He took the 3rd for me, given that he neutralised Hughes' attack, advanced positions on the ground, and was on top at the end. Say R1 was 10-9 Serra, R2 10-8 Hughes, and R3 10-9 Serra, then it's at least a draw - I can only think then that it was the takedowns that scored so heavily, but then that's lame because Hughes is huge and the smaller man is always going to get taken down. Hence, why score it so highly? And if they were favouring takedowns, then they should have rewarded Serra's takedown more, especially given that he's the smaller man.
I give it to Hughes. It was close but he won the 3rd it was simply because he was in control for the majority of the round. Also it would be hard for me to give it to Serra when the only time he had Huges in trouble was after an unintentional headbutt past that the majority of the fight was controlled by Hughes so he won.
You know before the Reebok thing the ufc used to charge those Sponsors. Example. They give hughs 5k for a spot in pants. Ufc implements new rule taking a cut of that. Now for the same spot they only pay hughs like 1k. Greedy ass ufc can’t even let them make a little on the side. Gotta have it all
Al surprised me alot. Good dude. Hanging with khabib is no joke. On days notice. Mcdouchebag couldn't even do it. What a stud Al is. Hope the best for him he deserves it.
Both were awesome....two of my favorites. Both guys have good hearts too. I would like to see a reunion of the two. GSP would be the perfect encouragement for Matt during his recovery. 🙂👍
GSP is fully retired, he has made that quite clear. He took a break once to deal with his colitis, but he has made it very clear that he isn't coming back again. Let the man rest and enjoy his retirement, he deserves it. He has nothing left to prove, and he isn't getting any younger. No reason to come back and lose, and damage his legacy when he is already considered by most to be the GOAT‼️🐐💯
Hughes was more of a wrestler with basic submission techniques because of his strength advantage. Serra was the far better submission artist but less of a wrestler
Matt Hughes was insanely strong for his size and was a great wrestler. People who have followed MMA from The beginning have seen some monsters come and go. It's sad to watch great fighters lose the fighting spirit and newbies dismiss entire careers. Jose Aldo, Tito, Royce are all prime examples My favorite fighters: Don Frye Fedor GSP
Rogan kept going on about Serra being a world champion BJJ black belt blah blah blah. But he got dominated on the ground by somebody Rogan said had “picked up a lot of stuff from Jeremy Horne.”
You know what, I watched this fight now for the first time. I have it to Matt Serra. I think his take down and damage in round 3 was better than Hughes. I have Serra round one and Hughes round 2. I think Matt Serra can be upset with that result.

DUDE!!! The guy beat the fuk out of her s wife on multiple occasions. Then he tried to commit suicide by train!!! He was my favorite fighter until I heard that !!!
The guy was a complete and utter a******. Karma caught up with the scumbag.
I've been wanting to see this fight for 11 years!!! SO glad i finally get to watch this. Great fight!
Great fight? You must not have watched many mma fights. This was a yawner thru and thru. Especially for a belt.
@@CrazyOldCanuck you will never be a woman
I remember watching this fight, and I knew 100% Matt was going to win this fight😳
Matt who? Douche cake
@@fiddelsworthdinkle Matt. You know, the fighter with the long shorts. Duh!
@@fiddelsworthdinkle You're almost there bud just think a little harder
Well I knew Matt was going to lose
Chael sonnen actually won
Its really sad what happened to matt hughes he was the reason i strated watching ufc.he is a legend to me in this sport
@fart nugget Covington one dimensional? Lmao
He was strong too. But didn’t have much stand up. Even the fights he won were often chaotic back and forth fights or comebacks. So he was good at winning close fights.
GSP seem like a much more complete fighter when they fought-at least the second and third time. Actually had a good jab and kicks
@@seanmatthewking gsp was outstriking him before the armbar
@@mauriciosalgadogonzalez2305 yep GSP was the superior fighter throughout those 3 fights but Hughes really capitalized off that submission. Same thing when you look at the Hughes/Penn trilogy the fight that Hughes won Penn was dominating until he got injured and Hughes capitalized.
3:55 Marcus Luttrell
Holy shit that's totally him
I honestly thought that Serra won it.
Yeah it’s bs
Agreed. Cerra should have had a 2 pt first round, Hughes never hurt him or did anything but hold him down. Cerra won this fight
Why should he have a 2 pt first round??? Everything he hurt Hughes with was illegal? And the big punch at the end? Also illegal
I give it to Hughes. It was close but he won the 3rd it was simply because he was in control for the majority of the round. Also it would be hard for me to give it to Serra when the only time he had Huges in trouble was after an unintentional headbutt past that the majority of the fight was controlled by Hughes so he won.
Lmao Hughes layed on him not doing any type of damage the whole time too
Matt Hughes conditioning is on point.. awesome fighting physique
They didn't test for steroids back then
I love it when Goldberg tells us what these UFC HOFers are going to do.
Despite how you feel about matt he deserved the win matt didnt have anything to really contend with against matt especially once it got to the mat.
Yeah, I agree, Matt didn’t have shit but a little luck against Hughes.
When the sponsors Paid the fighters well.
Gotta have it all
@@MinoritiesRlazy you're so right. How greedy can a man be?? Why wouldn't Dana want them to make as much as possible, he's so fuckin rich already
1:11 that's the power of Matt Serra as he hits him with a head butt to the chin.
@@gmb7200 Well now he works for a corporation...so the goal is always make them maximum profit

Al Iaquinta is the Matt Serra of today in almost every way.

@Ragin’ Cajun Do you try to read the whole comment, or you pick a few words and start typing an idiotic response ? Goddamn
Imagine if he beat Khabib Serra-style!
Al surprised me alot. Good dude. Hanging with khabib is no joke. On days notice. Mcdouchebag couldn't even do it. What a stud Al is. Hope the best for him he deserves it.
@@floatinggoose9197 I guess I might be guilty of that at times :)
Good classic fight. This era helped elevate the UFC to what it is today.
I want Joe Rogan to follow me around my whole life, and when I get hurt Joe can say “OOOOOHHHH HES HURT”
... and when you stop you buy a hotdog in the street and ask for chili topping, Joe will be right behind you saying, "We call this the Chili Dog"
Hughes submitted Ricardo Almedia, Trigg, GSP, Riggs. He's definitely black belt level.
Wow. First time watching this fight and omg. Awesome
This was awesome! Seeing a grappler vs grappler is just so intense. Anyone could be submitted out of nowhere.
Hughes was more of a wrestler with basic submission techniques because of his strength advantage. Serra was the far better submission artist but less of a wrestler
Two of the most respectable guys in MMA.
Matt Hughes was insanely strong for his size and was a great wrestler. People who have followed MMA from
The beginning have seen some monsters come and go. It's sad to watch great fighters lose the fighting spirit and newbies dismiss entire careers. Jose Aldo, Tito, Royce are all prime examples
My favorite fighters:
Don Frye
Fedor
GSP
Roids
How MMA has evolved so much since this time it crazy!
Rogan kept going on about Serra being a world champion BJJ black belt blah blah blah. But he got dominated on the ground by somebody Rogan said had “picked up a lot of stuff from Jeremy Horne.”
One of the best built up fights in TUF history. I'm glad I was there to see it live.
You know what, I watched this fight now for the first time. I have it to Matt Serra. I think his take down and damage in round 3 was better than Hughes. I have Serra round one and Hughes round 2. I think Matt Serra can be upset with that result.
Yup
Two of my favorite fighters from back in the day. Watching this again you can really see how much the game has changed since then. I like the way the game is played but this shit is classic for me. These guys are incredible.
"And the winner by unanimous decision is...MATT

God Bless the legend Matt Hughes. Hes been through a lot in and out of the ring
The more i read - i think the guy you replied to knows this and has a brain. compared to you. His statement is accurate
@Jack Adams because your so perfect right? I never judged his character, I just said hes been through alot.
He's a dirtbag but I wish him a full recovery.
I'm struggling to think who either of these guys would be favored against in current top 10. The sport has really advanced
Imagine non-USADA VS USADA!
In his prime Hughes beat GSP. I would say he would do very well. He was really skilled and a beast.
@A prime Hughes wouldn't crack the top 5. Prime Serra doesn't beat anyone in the top 10. Period.
If they were still fighting, i would imagine they would evolve with the sport.....lol.
Hughes beating the fuck out of Royce and renzo is the real evolution. MMA is just really well rounded with better conditioning and gameplanning
Much much much love for The One And Only Mr. Matt Hughs!
