I've been thinking of getting the WA47jr for a long time now and this video really cemented my decision. I think it's very versatile and can be useful for a number of drum applications as well. Thank you for the comprehensive review and demonstration
When you do the review of the S-87 make sure you try the different voicings. Mic parts say that there is an internal eq setting that can make it sound similar to a U67 ! Thanks again for those comparisons you are doing !
I wanna buy wa-47jr but I also wanna buy Rode NT2a. They are almost the exact price right now (20euros up or down). I have heard from the seller at the music store that NT2a is more darker sounding and wa-47jr has more brightness. I would like to see some comparison between those two mics. Can you do the comparison or something similar?
The first half of this helped confirm my decision to get the WA47jr. It was hard for my ears to pick out all the differences with the drums, but I did notice that both 47's were more crisp on snare and cymbals. However, I could really hear the differences on the guitar and speech comparisons. Both 47's sounded remarkably similar on the guitar, and definitely had more clarity and crispness overall. On the speech portion at both 6 and 3 inches, the top end was again very similar on both 47's (crisp but smooth), but the WA seemed to have richer and fuller lows than the T47. Both were better than the MXL in each example---it seemed more one dimensional. Mostly mid range, and not very clear or well defined compared to the other two. The two things that helped me the most are (1) I had wondered if the WA highs would be too rounded off or subdued. However, to my ears they sound crisp without being harsh. (2) I have read in reviews that it's somewhat lacking in low mids/body, but here it seems to have the fullest (WARMest) lows of the three, at least with your vocals. I watched a comparison on Sweetwater between the tube WA47 and this WA47jr (FET), and the tube was both fuller and brighter. The jr sounded clear, but thin in comparison. Certainly not the case in your comparison. Thanks for the video, and please share any additional thoughts on this matter.
I wish I could always have talented artists come to the studio to make demos.. at the time this video was release it wasn't possible because of the pandemic.. but even today, it's hard to get customers in.. I do love the jr.. it works on most thing I put it on.. Althought, the preamp and the room could make a good difference. For speach I started to use the S-87 from micparts.com. It takes less EQ to make it work for my talks on the channel. you can hear it in my last videos.. THanks for the comment !!
The WA sounded the most flat (that is a good thing). The MP T47 had a pleasant boost of the mids and early lows. The MXL 990 upgrade sounded boomy and lacked highs. Over all they all sounded good but I would say the WA did better as an overall mic. Mostly because it was flat and you could EQ in a curve easily.
Thank you very much for this comparative!! I was wondering about your thoughts on the build quality. I'm thinking about getting this mic, but it seems that this "cheap mics" result to be damaged in the short term. What do you think about this? Thank you!
This mic feels solid and well done. The switches seems a bit weak but they work perfectly. The shockmount is massive and solid, but I'm not sure about the attachment for the stand which limits the positions a bit. You can hardly put it upside down. For the price it's a very good buy. But be carefull this mic produce less high frequencies due to its capsule (47 style) if you never tried any 47 style mic, you should try it before you buy or make sure you can return it.. ;)
They are 2 very different animals.. The NT1 is kinda hyped on the high frequencies.. if you have a lot of high frequencies in your voice or the instrument you are going to record, it's better to go with the 47jr.. Every U47 inspired mics have less HF and are the best with HF agressive sources. The best thing to do is to try them yourself.
a lot of people say that Wa-47jr sounds terrible and have a lot distorcion... i had thinking in buy a Rode Nt1a and i have a tenor voice, but i really want a Wa-47Jr... what you thinking about? i really want a great mic for lead vocals in so different genres.
Listening to this video should have help you with setting if it distort or not.. Frankly, I never heard of this. I use it most on acoustic guitar and drum room mic. It has less high frequencies than most condensers because of the structure of the capsule. For vocal that has a lot of sibilance, it's a great choice.. If you want a more versatile mic, check for any U-87 inspired mics. I always start with my S87 from Micparts when I don't know the vocal. After that, if it doesn't sound right (which rarely happen) I try other mics. There isn't a garantied all around mic that does it all.. That's why most studios have at least a small selection.
Hi, i enjoy this review, i have a question, nt2a vs wa47 jr if i need recording voices, what is better? I have looking for akg c214 but in my country there is no stock.
The wa-47 sounds way darker than the Nt2a, the 47 style mics are perfect for those harsh high frequencies instrument and sibilant voices.. If it's not you case, you better consider a U-87 inspired mic, like the WA-87 or something similar, they will be more versatile. The best thing if you receive customers is to have a well chosen selection. One 47, one 87 and something with more HF like a AKG C-12 (wa-251 or similar)
They are both, very different sounding mics. The NT1 is hyped on the high frequencies and the 47 has a cut in the high frequencies.. Not aimed for the same kind of voices.. ;)
Honestly, you can't compare them. The 2300 has a boost in the high frequencies and the 47jr doesn't. They both have surface mount parts. On the other hand the T47 in the video doesn't have surface mount, it has a better design and sound.. The 47 family is perfect for sources with harsh high frequencies and sibilant or nazal sounds.. And the will take EQ better than the 2300
@@radosmusic3308 The 47jr is very good for the price, I wouldn't hesitate. Other similar, the Mini K47 from Roswell and Microphone-parts.com has a few DIY kit with the same capsule (RK47)

Good mic comparison! Nice singing, good voice and vibrato
So smooth and nice and the proximity effect sounds lush.

The T47 was superior in all examples, but especially in voice over. At 6" it blew the other (2) mics away! Thanks for this interesting comparison
Interesting compare Marco! Great video as always!

the mxl 990 is not bad.i like his sound
Just keep in mind this one has been mode with a RK-47 capsule ;)

You have a great, well produced video. Why don't you get a singer in there to test those mics. That would be very helpful.
Im going to sample your song 😂😂
Did I forget to specify I'm not a signer ?? lol ;)
