Original game boy is still my favorite system of all time. Something about handheld games at the time was so amazing. With the light and magnifying glass accessories in the back of the minivan on the way home from the mall just trying to get a level code or save spot before your batteries die and your screen slowly fades and slowly turning up the contrast to get just a few more minutes. Luckily I had the rechargeable AAs on hand. Thanks Mom & Dad.

I've never been big into handhelds other than GBC & PSP however, this is a fantastic product.

Looks amazing, it seems the dock is a must have, which bumps the price to $320. Add in Analogue’s infamous shipping rates, this gets pricey. It’s a shame Nintendo can’t just offer GB games to its Switch Online service, boggles my mind.

Analogue Pocket Is not Emulation, it has real hardware that natively runs the GBA, GBC etc. Games.

@@TehThespian if you play games on your phone you're not the right person to talk about retro games my friend. Only becouse it runs at full fps doesn't mean it runs great there is way more to it.

The picture and sound quality is amazing. It really shows how good the pixel art is for these games, something that the original hardware couldn't do, even with modded screens. I'd get one if the sd card is had supported ROMs but I'm guessing analogue doesn't want to put themselves in murky water by emulation. At least they support everdrives.

@@savagemathorror4671 check out boxypixel's unhinged aluminum cases for the gba sp. It pretty much mocks an analogue pocket look but is real hardware. would save you some money compared to buying an analogue pocket as well.
9:35 @MetalJesusRocks The reason why the Analogue Pocket has large bezels isn't really to do with the screen, but more to do with the fact that the stereo speakers are right next to the screen inside the system, there needs to be space for those. From what I've seen in tear downs, the speakers are very similar to whats found in the Nintendo Switch and the new Game&Watch systems where the speaker it actually laid flat, and the plastic around it has been molded in such a way to channel the sound 90 degrees from the speaker.

Good review. I am kind of on the fence due to the price, but it does support multiple systems which is cool. It would be nice to compare it to the modern IPS screen upgrades that are available for GB, GBC and GBA [original hardware].
I think the major issue is the other systems it supports cost less than the attachments. This things a huge cash grab.
@@syreplays5079 Well the screen it is using is a very expensive lcd. Cutting edge. They also created all the filters and scaling techniques for it. The thing is seriously impressive in its ability to recreate the original experience but idealized.
They should have used the gameboy advance form factor. Though it wouldn't look as slick, it could have been more comfortable with a bigger screen
If you haven’t looked into it, the gba has an awesome and really approachable modding scene.
You can buy IPS screens, rechargeable batteries, custom Shells. It’s really cool and pretty easy to install!

I got a GBA sp and some games came with it on kijiji for $160 . Score!
I bought a modded psp for only $150. Had all games on there from Nintendo all the way to ps1. Works flawless and all games look and sound great

I agree that the company makes solid retro console clones and I would love to pick one up or ANY of their systems, however, my pride gets in the way and I have a hard time backing a company that does not respond to fan questions or give feedback on comments. They are a one-way communication company and I hate that.
Communication is definitely one of their biggest shortcomings. Across the board. You know, they never notified their customers this was coming available for pre-order again? Even if you’re signed up for their email newsletter and signed up for a “back in stock” notification.
I was excited about this for a long time, but got tired of waiting and bought an Anbernic RG351V instead. I’ll always prefer to play my own carts, but honestly I have had literally zero issues with the Anbernic and it’s emulation, and it is a high quality device as well.
I think the rg351v is better than the pocket . The ability to play tons of systems and modded games , on top of having a joystick makes it the winner in my book
💯 Exactly! People overpay such a higher premium for nostalgia. The Anbernic line of products is amazing for handheld emulation, and runs just as well, if not better, than these clone products.
Pocket your paying for fpga and it’s ability to replicate the original handheld. But if you are fine with emulation, it doesn’t matter. I really want the Pocket, but I ain’t waiting to 2023….

Yeah, I picked up the RG351M. I love how it feels so high quality and how many different systems run on it. Honestly, in its price range it is near impossible to beat.
I like that it got two extra face buttons so we could also assign L & R shortcuts to it on games that need them without having to reach for the shoulder buttons every time.
This is next level, top tier stuff. Gameboy games never looked as good👍

They literally, objectively look better when emulated. You can upscale the resolution, up the framerate, etc. in addition of other quality of life improvements.
If I had already collection of physical carts, then this would be pretty cool, but expensive option.
I think all eyes are waiting on the jailbreak firmware. Imagine if this could play nes, snes, genesis, tg16 and more roms from the sd card

The Game Gear audio is still my favorite. I love that specific original GG sound for some reason (probably youth-sentiment 😀) Great video!
Late to the party on this one, but I must say this is a very nice handheld as I've noticed that, while you can find games very easily, at least over here finding used original base units in good condition can be a bit of a hassle at times for certain systems, having this readily available albeit at a higher price is really awesome!
This looks amazing. I'm going to personally wait since they have made physical improvements with their past consoles over time. I'm hoping they release these in different colors others than black and white. Also, I hope they release their own GameCube link cables since I would rather not remove the locking mechanism on my official Nintendo cables.
Aside from the Nt Mini cart slot, what physical changes have they made to any of their consoles?

Had one in my cart and was ready to submit the order within the first minute of pre-orders, but decided against it. After you add shipping and tax, it's almost an additional $50. Crazy. I still have all my vintage hardware, including an array of GB Color, Light, Advance, SP, Micro systems, so I can live without spending an extra $270 (without any accessories) on this. Worst time of the year to do pre-orders, too.
Sadly, if you change your mind later on, I think it’ll end up costing even more.
My first Analogue product was the Analogue CMVS Slim, a consolized NeoGeo MVS finished & housed in select hardwoods. The pocket is an amazing piece of hardware & shows Analogue has really come a long long way since those early days.
I’ve tried for years to get that Neo Geo. Whenever I saw someone selling it it went for a godly sum. I’ve picked up everything they released since.
@@FernandoMaldonado Yeah they’re definitely difficult to track down and can get pricey. I purchased 2 in ash wood black finish with matching controller directly from Analogue back in the day.
It will play roms eventually. Every console they've put out has had a jailbreak the week after they're released
For GB, GBC and GBA I would absolutely think so. Anything else, most likely not happening.
Their deal with this thing is to sell the add-ons to play other systems. Hard to do if people are playing all roms from the SD-card.
I was late to the party. So I'm hoping to snag one tomorrow. But I have to say the analogue brand hasn't steered me wrong with the genesis & snes consoles they put out.
Slight tip, when I bought it you couldn't pre-enter your card details by making an account. Unless they changed that you either have to have some auto-fill to enter it, manually enter it (I do not recommend this because you're counting potential seconds before sell out), or do a loophole of adding something else to the cart, entering the details, clicking save for later, and then backing out of buying the unwanted thing last minute.
Be sure to look ahead of time and know exactly what color/accessories you want.

I haven't ever had a GBA and I don't have my GameGear any more, which was my first ever game console back in 1992. But I do still own my GameGear cartridges and some GBC cartridges.
So I purchased this device, turned out at 255EUR for me - but yeah I still think it's a better deal than searching for a GG in great condition and a GBA (with good backlit mod).. But maybe I'm just justifying myself for buying expensive stuff.. :D
You don't need a backlit mod for a GBA, you can just buy a backlit SP, and the gamegear can be had for under 100. Your entire investment into this couldve been around 180 EUR instead of 255, and you can add an HDMI mod to both the gamegear and SP for under 70 dollars, bringing your grand total with tv out to around 250, instead of 350. I hope you enjoy though :)
That first preorder run was really rough. As bad as limited run games, maybe worse. Here's hoping tomorrow's drop will be less painful. I really wanted one.

I believe he is referring to the fact it was up for approximately 5 minutes and with them being based in Hong Kong, your credit card company will usually verify the purchase. Most of us had the items in our cart be removed during checkout
There's a fulfillment group now. Which means you'll eventually receive your order... But you'll probably be in the LAST group, late 2022 or early 2023...

@ Patrick McCabe, Yep. I lost my first preorder round because my bank rejected the transaction. By the time I could authorize it, it was too late. That has happened to me every single time I’ve purchased (or tried) from them, until this round, but only because Chase changed their processing procedures.
Analogue should win a Nobel prize for their work. I'm kidding but I'm also kinda serious. They're walking the line between fake hardware but non-emulation. A bit revolutionary if you think about it.

The only major issue is the cartridge mounting. The game cartridges like to fall out of this bad boy at the slightest graze of your finger.

I really wished Analogue would have allowed previous customers an early opportunity to preorder. It’s too difficult to compete with bots and frustrating seeing them immediately appear on eBay
This day and age of buying hardware sucks so bad. Like trying to buy a PS5 still after over a year of it being out...what really sucks it'll probably be this way with any major hardware release for the foreseeable future. I miss the days you could go in a store and get what you want :(
@@Nathan-is7li Companies that have the money and volumes to pay for fab time and manage supply chain well don't have as big an issue. So large guys like Apple still hit most targets. Console makers not so lucky. Bespoke console makers surprised they can get any factory time at all.

@@SumDumGy they’re planning to ship 300 million iPhones in 2022 each of which costs as much or more than any PlayStation. They’ll also ship some 20-30 million Macs plus watches and iPads. Let me know when Sony ships 10 million of any console in one year.
@@espressomatic Let me know when you have something irrelevant to contribute and compare to. Apple is one of the largest corporations on the planet. They have all the resources and influence they can get to produce their products. This year, they cannot meet demand. Sony and Analogre would be pushed aside by manufactures and assembly plants in favor of Apple’s business, if it ever came down to overlapping needs.

@@oceano901 Mainly the price and the fact I'd rather have a nice device that can play roms. This is a VERY cool device for those it's meant for though.
You made two complaints about the screen, both indicating you wanted it bigger. There is a specific reason the screen is the size it is. Its an exact 1:1 scale of the Gameboy/Pocket/Color that way no image stretching occurs. It also allows the pixels to be exactly square so it doesnt look 'off' (as replacement screens for the other handhelds tend to be).
TL:DR the screen is sized intentionally for accuracy.
This might be unpopular opinion, but for me GBA SP AGS-101 is more than enough to play Game Boy games. I do realise that modern screens are better, but I never felt that the screen on that device needed improvements. Unlike every previous Game Boy model, which were seriously lacking in the screen department.

Fast games have insane amounts of blur though. Good enough for most games, but mario kinda looks like I'm playing through a milkshake. I'm excited for my Pocket to arrive, but I agree it is unnecessary.
I agree. Let's see if the PC Engine/ Turbografx HuCard adapter or the access to the second FPGA to port other cores to it makes it worth it.

I can’t believe I didn’t realize this was a thing! I just found out about it this past weekend, I guess I’ve been living under a rock haha! Curious if it is worth it to be honest, may be worth it to wait for any limited edition models to come out, it would be cool if they brought the transparency to the system like atomic purple or a jungle green! Nice video MJR as always.
@zero4021 the price is a bit steep for me right now but I like where they are going with this! It has a lot to offer. I’ll hold out for a limited edition one :) I’m still focusing on my gameboy color collection. Only need 1 more to go for my complete basic color set.

Its pricy and IDK what the actual product will look like or perform so ill wait for reviews, Glad to see its almost flawless in its design and features. Shame about the dock not having those features for the pictures but I definitely want to grab one of these in the future, hope they keep producing them for a while so I can get one!

Really excellent review I loved how you kept going back to the original hardware for comparison as well as taking your time to really familiarize yourself with the pocket before you started diving into the review. If I only had one review that I could watch on the pocket it would be this one.

It should be noted the Dock has been confirmed to be getting a software update in 2022 to bring in the features it offers in handheld mode. It's basically a beta software right now.

I've been looking at IPS modded GBAs, but even there it's a hefty penny.
I wanna start building a gb/gbc/gba collection, but I need a good screen, and it seems the only non-expensive option is emulation nowadays.
Hoping more ppl decide to start making these clones, preferably at a slightly lower cost.
Yeah this is what kills it for me. You can buy a backlit SP for significantly cheaper than this, before you add on anything else. It just doesn't make sense.
@@syreplays5079 This'll cover half a dozen other handhelds with adapters far cheaper than purchasing new systems, and is brand new, not 20 years old. As time scrolls on, those SP's will have more and more problems.
Not saying the SP isn't the right choice for you in particular, but the Pocket *does* make sense for a lot of situations.

Do games with vibration (e.g. Drill Dozer) maintain a stable connection with the port through vibration? Other reviewers have commented if you bump the cartridge it can freeze the game due to interrupting the connection. I'm curious if this happens on its own with vibration.

Great review. I think there is not too much of an advantage having an Analogue Pocket over the original hardware. You can still find a Gameboy Advance for cheap that plays GB, GB Color, and GBA. The Analogue Pocket does look great though for someone without a GBA it would be a great investment.

My unhinged gba sp destroy this thing when it comes to play gba games. The cool thing of this is the dock and the overall versatility. Otherwise its an extremely overpriced handheld
I could be wrong - but I've watched 5 other reviews of this thing and MJR is the only person to talk about the feel of the buttons and d-pad
The idea of playing an everdrive on this amuses me. "I've ripped old software off old storage media, put it on new flash media but interfaced with old port technology to run on new hardware simulating old hardware but with new software overlay features that can simulate the look of the old hardware's limitations."
MJR DUDE! The viewing angle on this handheld looks epic, cant remember you mentioning. The old Gameboy you couldn't watch someone else play. This handheld looks cool the screen obviously is high end. The back bumper buttons cool idea. I think this will sell well........ That micro SD slot hmmmm deffo gonna be flashable and rom-able. May pick this up. Not massive handheld fan.....but would love to have a nostalgia hit with this. So many old games and many memories to bring back. You can't plut a price on that. Well this manufacturer has lol.
Oh almost forgot only problem or negative feedback would be the sound / on board sound. Compared to classic. Is noticeably different, not as warm colourful as old school Nintendo hardware. Still debatable but an coming from an audio background me, it is noticeable. Loss of warmth and sounds thin compared to classic.
They should update speakers and sell bit higher.
Gotta say the audio difference was recorded and edited by MJR so obviously, I can't 100 percent review the audio difference since it's been recorded / edited and rendered before YT does there magic. Would love to test these side by side with old hardware.
It sounded thin the new one compared to old but that's going via editing and YT and average mobile phone speakers. Got respect for this company pushing out hardware at that price. The screen looks sick!!!! Very crisp at that price range 🤔👌😁

I would disagree with you if the shipping wasn't so expensive; not to mention the wait to get one's hands on a pocket will be at least another year, unless you preorder in the first 15 seconds. So much hassle for just another way to play - I agree!
@@lukaskidd4621 This wave of pre-orders was delayed three times I think and that's not including the delay *before* the pre-orders went live. It went from shipping Q3 2020 to just barely making it by this christmas.
They're at least offering a decent "pre-order wave" system now.
Dont get me wrong I really think this device looks great but even if I buy one Im pretty sure Im gonna stick with a regular gb pocket color or gba with ips screen mods, because im looking for that old classic feeling, all the features on this device are great IF that’s what you are looking for. I personnally never gonna play gb games on my tv and don’t like save states and Im not a big fan of the cartridges not completly insert on the back, wulff den shows that on his review video and already have scratches on the back of the unit, for such a premium device that shouldn’t happend so quick. That being said this device is exiting because it bring attention to gameboy in 2021 and thats great !
@@michaeldemers2716 Good point about TG-16 although those adapters might not be ready to order anytime soon.
The bezels on the side are probably due to the speakers being located in the top corner on both sides. They needed room for that most likely. It also seems to be very generous with the Gameboy but not so much the GBA games due to the aspect ratio. Anything that's 4:3 will be able to use the bigger screen size.

This definitely looks awesome and is by far my most wanted clone system! Considering I already have all these original systems I don't have much care about clones, BUT I love handheld gaming on the go and this thing would be perfect for playing any and all of those I wish, all in one! If they can do a virtual boy adapter or a clone handheld system to play those carts, my life would be complete

I wonder what's their yearly production capacity that people were able to fill it in hours so they've made them to push to 2023. I don't think I've seen any successful small/middle size company pulling that but probably I'm wrong :) Usually long pre-order times finished badly. I hope it won't be like that this time, I'm excited for the product but not excited to wait 2 years :D I'll be watching it from a distance and hope I'll get my hands on it faster than 2023 :D
First run preorders took a year and a half to roll out. This round had three different delivery tiers. We’re still waiting to find out which tiers we landed in.

It’s fking fantastic but my RG351V already caters to all my retro handheld needs. As tempting as this über device is, I bought the RG351V for a mere €80, it sports a great and large 4:3 screen and my 128gb SD carries a whopping 13000 or so games from every conceivable system of yore, most of which are emulated just fine through the numerous cores in Retroarch, with terrific UI’s such as ArkOS of 351ELEC, with a slew of neatly categorized collections and a plethora of tweaking possibilities to achieve the images you desire across all those old consoles. This is not meant to talk down the Pocket in any way, it’s just me basically realizing I already got what I wanted. My best friend has preordered a Pocket though, so I’m going to test it for sure!

I was kind of hoping this would be something like a handheld Raspberry Pie. Not sure I'd shell out $200+ so I can go on a scavenger hunt for retro cartridges. If it was something like the Switch, but with a storefront for those types of games, TOTALLY. But not now. Great concept though.
I agree, the screen should've been bigger at this price point especially. Those borders kinda sucks, giving an illusion that it has a way bigger screen than the orignal gameboy. Barely bigger if anything.

This device offers a perfect 10x integer scale for GB and GBC games. GBA games will have a 6.67x VERTICAL scale and a 6.67x HORIZONTAL scale with interpolation. You'll see horizontal black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, but that's the nature of GBA games since they used a 3X2 aspect ratio. Still looks WAY better than the original GBA screens however. Definitely on my list of things to buy.
If I'm not mistaken, you can just reset your video options to default or set it back to the analog option for you to get your options in docked mode

The screen is pretty niche, I imagine the only option they had for a 1600x1440 was this screen size. Analogue seems pretty perfectionist with their systems, if they had access to a larger screen, they probably would have used it. Though maybe I'm misunderstanding how parts are sourced for this sort of product.

If you want to use the Dock, with very minimal input latency I suggest using a 2.4Ghz 8Bitdo controller. They have built in support for 2 of these. 8Bitdo makes NES, SNES, and Genesis style controllers for these. It would also be silly to think that Analogue won't be adding the pixel effects to the Dock. I.E. scanlines, dot pixel grids, and so on. It should be no different than the MiSTer or GBA Consolizer running on a display.
I just can’t believe they put the controller port on back, instead of the front of the dock!
@@SumDumGy I don't see myself using the USB ports for controllers. It has built in 2.4g and USB wireless for 4 controllers. I already own multiples of most of the 8bitdo 2.4g wireless controllers, and they work great (N30, SN30, and M30). The only thing I could see myself using would be 2 of the USB wireless dongles, since I believe the internal 2.4g support tops out at 2 controllers, so for 4 player games, I might also use 2 dongles, in addition. And those are fine in the back. I like how the Dock looks with just thee Analogue Pocket facing outward and all of the connections in the back. It looks a lot nicer/neater like that.
@@videogameobsession Different strokes for different folks. I *only* use wired controllers. Plugging one in and using it means keeping the dock turned around backwards. Is that a better look than the clean one you prefer? All consoles have controller ports on the front of them, if I’m not mistaken.
@@SumDumGy If they were actual controller ports, such as finished SNES/GEN ports, then it might look appropriate, but USB ports really should be in the back. I used to only use wired, until decent wireless controllers started coming out. 2.4g are generally free of input latency. Coming in at under a frame, or about the same as a USB wired, when polling is added in. It just makes more sense for me to use wireless, since my consoles are at the other side of the room, and I have a bunch set up. I also like how you can simply turn the Pocket on with the wireless controller as well.
Just curious though, why would you have to turn the Pocket Dock around backwards / keep it that way, just to use the USB ports?
Some older consoles do have their controller ports in the back (Atari VCS, CD-i) or hidden inside (ColecoVision).
@@videogameobsession I respect where you’re coming from. You want clean and convenient for you (I don’t even keep my consoles hook up or set up because of dust; they’re stored when not in use). We all do. I’m sure wireless controllers are just fine nowadays and I know they’ve come along way in technological improvements.
It’s not just about the controllers though when it comes to latency. The TV has a huge impact there. For example, my Retron 5 (another console without ports in front, but understandably so) is completely unplayable with my current TV, even with wired controllers, due to latency. I just can’t do wireless right now.
That aside, I’m a simple man with simple tastes, and I like to keep things simple. Wired is simple. I never have to concern myself with charging or extra cords. I’m always close enough to consoles during play to not have to worry about cord length.
Regarding ports, the Evercade VS and the PS4 use USB controller ports, in front, and it isn’t detrimental in appearance. Hell, my Blu-ray players all have them in front, too. No worries. That’s not to say that I’d object to some nice rubber or vinyl port plugs (dust again) to hide it a bit if someone wished.
Older consoles with ports in back used thicker cables. Today’s controller cables are thinner. If you want to go wired on the Pocket Dock, like I do, turning the unit around protects the cord and connector from having to make a harsh 90° turn right out of the Dock that will eventually damage either the cable or the port itself. You do also lose a few precious inches of cord length, which was always my biggest gripe when it came to Nintendo Japan and the Famicom design (the controller cords are hard wired into the unit...bad, but wired at the front of the console, where they then travel inside to the back, exit through grommets, then make their way forward again to the player, which makes for two feet of wasted cord length on already too short a cords).
I think if I played my Pocket in the Dock with a wired controller, facing the proper way, it would be only a matter of moments anyway until the slight pull on the cord rotated the Dock 90° toward me anyway. I doubt it’s heavy enough to resist that.
To launch this wave of preorders (covering the next 2 years!) immediately before Christmas when no one has extra cash laying around is just poor business. It's like they are trolling their customers. They should have waited just another month or two. I am starting to hold resentment against Analog over the way they run their business. I've wanted to pick one of these up for years but am passing once again. Frustrating. I want to be a fan and customer of Analog but 99% of the time they won't take my money and the 1% they choose to take it is 2 weeks before Christmas?
I agree - I was going to get one but wouldn’t see it until 2023. It was scalped badly. eBay has them now listed for 900.

For the music stuff, you may want to hit up Ian from Pat the NES Punk's channel. He's into that aspect of the system and he should be getting his Pocket in January.
This seems like the end-game if you were ever considering ips screen mods and such of any of the gameboys. The screen being so high-res that you can then mimic the LCD/dot-matrix aesthetics lets it be the best of both worlds. The PC can do those effects great, but for handheld, the past screen replacement mods just weren't high-res enough, you could only do it on phones which then have to be made massive after you mount a controller. Having to have flash carts for the 3 out of the box systems, and many more with the future adapters they're planning to release, that's where this gets very expensive, at $30 a pop for the adapters and who knows how much for all those flash and SD cards. If someone can CFW it and easily just put roms on it, it becomes a much better deal, for those that want something more accurate and less buggy than the emulation retro handhelds.

Hola Jason, la verdad estuve muy entusiasmado con la salida del analogue pocket, pero la dificultad de vivir en otro país y luchar por un número de unidades tan limitado me hizo intentar probar algo diferente, algo del lado sparrow la miyoo mini, no es un FPGA claramente, pero es increíblemente portátil (se que eres un purista en el tema de hardware original) pero algunas veces uno se puede perder de algunas curiosidades. @@SumDumGy cause of the shipping email. Lol. Was actually delivered on Friday and I’ve been playing a few games. Metroid Zero Mission and Pokémon Fire Red. It looks amazing. The screen resolution makes them look really clean. Haven’t setup the dock yet but everything was shipped like their consoles in nice boxes. They did a great job. It was worth the year and a half wait.

Analogre’s Hong Kong banking caused me to miss out on the first round because my bank rejected the transaction. I got in on the most recent round and their website said we were supposed to be notified within a few days as to which of the three delivery tiers our orders landed in. We haven’t been. When you said a few weeks, it sounded like maybe you had heard something, somehow, because that’s about maybe when the first tier will be shipping.
Amazing review. I would love to pick up one of these I have a decent sized handheld gaming collection I haven't been able to play for years.
The only thing this needs is compatibility with the GBA to Gamecube cable for those late night Four Swords Adventures or Crystal Chronicles sessions
