  • Susie Ibarra is known for her innovative style and cultural dialogue as a composer, improviser, percussionist, and humanitarian. She is interested in the intersection of traditional and avant-garde styles and how this informs and inspires interdisciplinary art, education, and public service. Most recently, Ibarra’s composition and improvisation work has blended traditions, rhythms, and tunings from musical cultures across the globe.
In 2009, Ibarra cofounded Song of the Bird King to create multimedia projects that feature both contemporary and traditional music, and that contribute to preservation and innovation in indigenous communities.
Her recent works include the world premiere of Binalig Blues by Arun Ghosh’s pan-Asian Arkestra Makara, and Hidden Truths: Prayer for a Forgotten World, a 5.1 surround-sound composition recorded with seven Filipino indigenous tribes, performed with Roberto Rodriguez as a duo called Electric Kulintang.
Ibarra’s recent recordings include Drum Sketches on Innova Records and Drum Codes with Electric Kulintang on SOTBK Records.

Beautiful sounds but the site of a Hot Depot orange bucket is just so very HORRID and really wrecks it!!!! Even a cement container or a stainless steel or iron cooking pot or ANYTHING would be better - seriously? home depot? come on. do better.

You know wasn't even really noticing till you brought it up, captain obvious. The same thing they use to say about using break drums.

The bucket does a great job of anchoring the performance to the wonder of the moment. Ms. Ibarra’s amazing humility gently reaches out and embraces her audience. She transcends barriers, allowing all creatures to enjoy a sensitive reflection on the eternal whole. She spoke in her interview of the sounds of this planet, small fleeting speck of dust that it is. Her playing achieves cosmic dimensions!

Percussion has so many applications this is wonderful. Creativity is always in abundance in the mind of a percussionist. Love the way her playing ideas coincide so nicely w the recording she used. Also a very nice touch w the brushes .

Amazing. A welcome change from the usual drum pyrotechnics you find on youtube. Thanks for proving percussion can indeed be a melodic instrument.

Listen to Joey Baron, Jeff Hamilton and Brian Blade (if you haven't already). All are phenomenally musical. Often, Terry Bozzio, too.

Susie Ibarra is special.. I am deeply impressed by this person! And with Evelyn Glennie, she is my favourite drummer/percussionist of female drummers world, inspirational and brilliant!
They know how to create unique atmospheres, always changing, simply complex and within everyone's reach ... they can play everything, from classical music to avant-garde jazz, up to electronic experimentalism ... to orchestral and chamber music, or simply they can also play a chair, having nothing else available, or something even simpler and more unexpected !
And they can play with children (and children themselves, probably!) and with adults, of different social backgrounds, as well as with teenagers and even with elderly people .. this is inclusion, this is serious music, this is culture all round! Very nice, thanks Ms.Susie Ibarra! XD They are beautiful people,I think,, among my reference points in the world of drums and music in general! * Thank you!
