"Train like you fight. Fight like you train." Love this phrase. 7 Steps of any fight (conversation). I learned these on my first day of martial arts training. 1: Walk away. 2: Walk away. 3: Walk away. 4: If you cannot walk away, hurt them. 5: If they come back, maim them. 6:If they come back, kill them. 7: Walk away. Always walk away. On my first day of martial arts training, I was 4 years old. I only took lessons from that instructor for a few months before we moved, but I am thankful for that first lesson. I have never had to take a fight beyond the fourth step. Most have ended during steps 1-3. When you understand where a fight can lead (step 6) and you have compassion for your fellow human beings and yourself, you will not want to engage in physical violence. The best way to walk away from a fight is to never have the fight. Train with compassion...fight like you train.
You are correct Shifu K., what one learn in form, will be different when one is really fighting. When one really in a fight, it is your instinct of what one do in training will come out based on timing, defense, and attack. Sometimes our emotion is so caught up, that it over takes our training in form.
I live in Pennsylvania. We have no teachers anywhere near your ability in this area. The closest is many hours away and it is very disheartening that this is the case. Much respect to you Sifu.
this guy :) When I learned tai chi, I learned it from my mom's neighbor in Taibei. Only fundamental basics for focus and improving concentration and awareness. also leads to meditation aspects from a Buddhist approach. When I studied boxing it was purely for aggressiveness and breathing technique. Push the body harder for longer. When I studied Taekwondo and karate, it was to learn something new, and improve basic skills. still want to learn aikido, and kung fu..... When I started studying military hand to hand combat, I mostly veered towards wrestling and jujitsu takedowns. in my experience almost 80-90% of fights ended up on the ground. people on the street and in prison don't fight fair.
True WingChun interesting. I don't think I ever really looked at it like that. The gentleman who showed me only the basics in a few short weeks was a veterinarian. he told me it helped with his focus and concentration through his studies and eventually steady hands for surgical procedures. I was a student in college at that time, so why not try it. Never really saw it as more than physical/ mental conditioning. (heard something about a spiritual aspect of it but never actually had the opportunity to reach that far in advance). I do know that after I learned and practiced for a very long time, my breathing techniques improved. as a boxer that is important. Capoeira also improve breathing and balance conditioning, after head injury :) hahahaha, fair fight, I mean similar match up. same height & weight class. a good sparing partner only helps to improve. it's when a guy twice you size sneak up behind you when you not looking, I can't stand. I never see a sumo wrestler attack a small child in the hospital that is sick. but unfair fight is kinda like that. Sumo champ is the nicest guy ever! so it just doesn't make sense. Weapons are whole different story. first I gotta make it to india! donate something to kelar. lol :D
Wing chun is also good but personally i train muay thai and boxing and find that muay thai is great at close range with clinch, knees and elbows and also with boxing uppercuts and rapid fire hooks you can pretty much deal with any close quarter hand to hand situation. Add some wrestling for taller attackers and your all set. These are the basis of all military systems such as krav maga, mcmap etc

Shifu kanishka Sharma i always wanted to ask.. Why dont we see more people in UFC using tradional kung fu principles? Why do they always rely on kick boxing frame work?
Android jackson lee. I'm no expert in martial arts, mostly self taught. UFC is a different kind of fighting with a different goal in mind. Like all other fight competitions UFC has rules and the goal is to win according to those rules. Street fighting is different. No rules. The goal is to end the fight without dying...and hopefully without killing the other person, but those are very real possibilities. Perhaps Shifu has a different perspective.
As someone from a boxing and karate background without many trapping, Why bother with the chisau drill? why not just apply the four techniques shown at 2:30 in sparring vs a life opponent whos trying to hit you back? wouldn't that be better? Not trying to offend anyone. Just want to be a better martial artist.
