As a toyota technician who has rebuilt this engine, check the valve cover gaskets! Ive seen sealant over applied and coming into contact with the camshaft lobes.

I'm interested in this car. But, will this issue go away after changing the oil multiple times thought the life of the car? This, I think, will allow all of the break-in metal shards to go out, right?
Can you do this inspection on a '22 WRX? I have an oil change coming up in December and might have you guys do it this time if I can see what's in that pick-up cage.
I have a 22 model with 3.5K miles (no commute). Had my oil changed twice so far due to time, not mileage. How important is changing twice a year? I ask because I’ve seen people say it can go a year. While that may be possible, I don’t want that to mess with warranty in case something arises in the future.
I'd keep the 5k miles or 5 months to play it safe. Engine oil can also harbor contaminants such as acids and moisture which can damage the engine if left to sit.
Late comment but I own a '16 FRS with 89k miles and I recently had a cam carrier oil leak. Car is at a local shop being fixed under warranty but Im paranoid about how they're going to reseal everything; they need to pull the motor out too. The RTV issues w the second gen kinda make me concerned about if my first gen has similar issues. Also didn't know you were in the Bay Area, would definitely bring my car over in the future for small maintenance or installs
Late 2023 car. The trend I've been seeing is that some late 2023's we will see big strings of excess RTV in the oil we drained out (as seen in the cell phone video) but the oil filter will be clean.
Keep waiting I contacted Toyota headquarters and the response very poor mention that As long as I don’t get an oil pressure on the dash WON’T be a problem?? Also the dealer wanted to charge $450.00 to remove the oil pan a search for RTV!!!
So does NOBODY know where this RTV is coming from ??? Why not just yank the motor out, remove the timing chain covers and re-apply the RTV properly and do the same for the oil pan .... That should stop the RTV issue.

Oil goes through the filter first and it does its job of catching anything unless to small.
The torque spec for the oil drain plug bolt on gen2 is 30.8 ft•lbs. It was 28.9 on gen1.
1 ft lb really ???

Just picked up a ‘23 BRZ, will certainly do a 1000 mile break in oil change as you mentioned. Couldn’t imagine waiting until 7k miles 😬
Yes. First oil change at 7500 miles is horrifying.
Thank you
Thanks for the support!
Thanks for the helpful advice, I wish you were my mechanic!
well done!
Thanks!
Man I did 3 oil changes before 6k miles. But I bought a lifetime oil change from Subaru. Gonna use my 4 changes a year.
Fantastic info thanks man

No. As seen in this video, RTV will remain trapped in the oil pick up and create a "birds nest" ua-cam.com/video/H0tjPnGQ2w4/v-deo.html

We can do it. Results are most accurate on the first 2 oil changes.
New GR86 / BRZ - How soon to change break-in TRANSMISSION and DIF oil ???
Before your first track day or 30k miles

4 of my cars see about 20 miles per week, so i change the oil once per year
What's the deal with the black Trueno?

Have you seen any RTV issues with the last Gen 86/BRZ?
Yes with the RTV inspections we've done so with the 2024's, its looking like 98% are fine, 2% have a serious RTV issue like the early 2022 cars
@@CMAutohaus how about 2020 models?
@@ericcoombs 1st gen cars do not inherently have the RTV issue from factory

That does NOT work, loosen the bolt and take it out, put it back on and it wont line up again.
I want to buy one but I am waiting for Toyota to wake-up.
This is going to be a Subaru issue as the engines are manufactued by them. Toyota of Japan unfortunatly claims this is a "non issue"
Its a Subaru motor and Subaru does NOT seen to care.
Just buy it, I just picked up my car. There’s laws that prevent us from getting screwed over. They have to prove it was your fault. Which this isn’t.

I dont think anyone wants to tear open their engine on their brand new cars - hell, we dont even want the dealers to be touching our engines
