Jonathan correctly asserts that the therapeutic alliance is essential for effective psychotherapy. That said, the research suggests that the alliance is just as often there result of therapeutic work as it is its predecessor. This is where Davanloo's work on D and R, from the start, are so helpful in removing barriers to a truly therapeutic alliance. In particular, character defenses will prevent the establishment of a therapeutic alliance. We must work to remove these defenses so an alliance can be formed.
