A Year's Worth of Updates (in less than 2 minutes)

- What's been keeping me busy over these past 12 months on my 310 gallon mixed reef -- adding corals, troubleshooting dying corals, removing troublesome dwarf angelfish, building a saltwater mixing station, re-plumbing my closed loop and return systems, adding an auto-feeder & UV sterilizer and reinforcing my custom sump. Stuff like that. Oh, and fighting off a rare infection I caught from one of my fish. Detailed videos to follow!
sounds about right for receiving the "Year from Hell" award. This is the 2nd vid I've watched and I miss my tank. At first there was some mental critiquing, curiosity and questions on the setup and design of the display tank. Then I got a glimpse of your set up to maintain the water quality and environment. All I could think was wait, stop, rewind, what was that? I wanna see. My tank was about 1/3 of the size and I didn't have a fish room. Yup, I'm envious.
Oh wow, thanks so much. I'm working on the script for my fish room tour right now, so much more to come soon if you like seeing the life support. Thanks so much for your comment -- I'd love to hear more of your feedback on the system!
Wait an infection from your fish. Need details on that so we know what not to do.
Absolutely -- I get a sense people are going to want the infection update first so I'll get it in the pipeline. Luckily the particular bacteria is very rare so most people haven't even heard of it. I actually saw three doctors before my (very smart) orthopedic surgeon identified it.
@@BaconCovehow did you get it? Did fish bite you ore did you have an open wound and got infected that way?! Im confused
@@ouchh100 Probably just a cut but my tangs bight me when I put my hand in tank they always think im feeding lol.
It is expensive hobby ugh?..my ex bf had a 500 gallon salt water tank put in his home for his son . We didn't have a "fish room" though. I find that interesting ..so it holds water that is circulated? You have an impressive system!! We had seahorses, porcupine fish, clowns, a shark, hawkfish, angelfish, lion fish,..and many others..We actually paid a professional fish guy to come and take care of the tank 2x s a week..It was sooo beautiful, especially at night!
One of my favorite things to do is watch the tank wake up early in the morning when I come down to start working. 500 gallons, huh? Even more expensive than mine! Yes, the water circulates from the display to the sump in the fish room and back. I think I'm going to do my next video on the plumbing, so stay tuned. Thanks so much for your comments!
I have a stupid question. What supports are at the base of the tank? If water weighs about 8lbs a gallon your water weight alone is 2,500lbs. Must be a pretty sturdy structure!
Good question. There's a powder-coated steel frame underneath the tank. The wood stand enclosure is purely aesthetic. I got the stand from Planet Aquariums: www.coral-vault.com/products/planet-aquariums-metal-stand?variant=43595530830036

Thank you so much!!
I notice you have nice gentle flow in the video. Is this typical or did you turn it down for video.
I ask because I also have a peninsula tank about 38 inches long and struggle with either too much flow where the hammer and torches bounces around or not enough and the sand gathers detris
Do you turn your sand over once in a while or does the power heads get the sand enough ?
Well, the flow was a real challenge. I have my return and a closed loop both plumbed to return overhead to the end of the tank. Took lots of fiddling to get it the way I wanted, but adding eductors to the closed loop is what did it. I'm going to make a video about the flow at a later date. Eventually I'll need to add a gyre on the far pane but I'm enjoying a display completely void of cords for as long as I can. As for the sand I turn that over myself. I know bare bottom is cleaner but I will never tire of looking at a beautiful white sand bed.
Got it. How often do you turn over the sand ?
@@TheHelicapt Every couple of days, or if I get a little algae bloom. I've had bad luck with sand sifters (had a diamond goby that made a complete mess of my old tank) so now I just do it myself.
Who buys corals and puts them in a tank with angel fishes... You were asking for trouble.
I know, right? I'd hoped I could get away with dwarf angels but nope... My coral beauty has remained a model citizen, but the lemonpeel, half-black and eibli had to go.
The tank is looking great, love your lighting set up!
Thank you!
That sucks hope you get better.
Thank you very much! It's been a long haul but making slow progress every day. Thanks for the comment!
Beautiful tank. We need to know the success secrets??? 🤓😂. There is no nuisance algae? Sand is sterile clean? Where is the Cyano? Dino’s? Aptasia? Vermetid snails? Life’s not fair? And wow, the hand? Got my attention. 🥴 Did you have an open wound when you think you got the infection? Thanks for sharing the good and bad. 🤘
Wow, thanks for the compliments! I'm planning for most of my posts to be about my experience and practices in the hobby -- so if you're interested in learning from both my successes and failures stay tuned! The bacteria is transmitted through non-intact skin, so I must have had some small scratch, though I have no recollection of what it may have been.
Nice update Ken! Glad to see the corals are happy!
Thank you sir! Happy to finally be having reliable success with the corals...
Great tank! Can i kno what are the dimensions?
Of course -- 8 ft long by 30 inches wide by 25 inches tall. 310 gallons in the display, another 90 in the sump. More videos to come soon so stay tuned!
Very nice 👌. Sorry for hand. You should get gloves
You're not the first person to tell me that (including my wife). I think I would need shoulder-length gloves if I were going to keep my hands fully dry...
@@BaconCove 👍
hey Ken, lovely setup. I am about to set up a similar sized tank but 6' instead of 8', but still 30" wide. Before your angels did a number on your corals, were they doing well? In the brief pic, the colonies looked great! I ask because I contemplating similar lighting to yours but 3 Kessil and 60" T5 since the new tank is smaller. I currently run 2 Kessil and 4 T5 on my 90G and it's amazing, but a 90G is only 18" wide vs 30" your tank is and my new one! just curious what you think. The shimmer is just stunning.
Ok, first of all I LOVE the Kessil shimmer. Unmatched in my opinion, and the closest to what I've seen in natural reefs. I've always been a T5/LED combo guy -- I think the LEDs give best control, ramp up/down, etc but the T5 add the diffuse coverage to help with growth (particularly the SPS). I only run my T5 for about 7-8 hours during the middle of the day. I designed the lighting rack to have the T5s at 1/3 and 2/3 the width of the tank (the 10 inch and 20 inch marks). The setup gives great coverage and I've had great coral growth. One of my earlier videos describes the lighting rack in more detail.
@@BaconCove thank you! so if you had to do your tank all over again, you'd choose the a360x + T5 combo again? I think that's what I'll continue with as well
@@drewstyring1446 Absolutely. I love the a360x plus T5. My only consideration would be that I've heard there's a chance the industry will be phasing out T5's over the coming years. There are some pretty good LED strip lights that could be used in a similar fashion to improve coverage/spread.
Osteo from M. marinum?
That's gnarly.
Yes! The M. marinum, at least -- I managed to dodge osteo, or at least caught it before got to that point. Was nasty tenosynovitis and I'm on triple antibiotic therapy for ~9 months to clear the infection. I assume you're medical?
@@BaconCove Damn that's crazy, man. It's like the scarier version of paly toxin stuff. Hope you're doing better.
I'm just a nurse, but I saw fish, ortho, a real long course of antibiotics and took a guess haha.
I just posted the video about the infection if you're curious...
Hi Ken, your system inspired me so much a year ago and helped me design my own built-in tank. I now have this channel for my own tank. Just wanted to say thank you! Tank is looking amazing and can't wait to follow along again. What was the disease you got and from what fish???
You've got a great setup yourself! I'd love a tour of the display -- in-wall tanks are so beautiful. So the infection is called mycobacterium marinum and it's super rare (don't worry about catching it) -- I think it was from one of the lyretails that died in my QT earlier this year. I think my next video will be about the infection so stay tuned. Thanks for the comment!
Beautiful tank! I’d love to know more about how you introduced your corals. Looking forward to watching a future video on that.
Thanks Samantha! I want to do a video revisiting all my livestock, and I'll definitely go over the corals. Thanks for commenting!
Aren't you supposed to mount those uv sterilizers to the wall? I really like the peninsula setup!
I'm a little obsessed with redundancy and safety features. One of my hangups is avoiding anything that could possibly cause a catastrophic leak, so I have literally all my filtration either inside or hanging over my sump. Particularly those UV units which are notorious for springing leaks. I'll go into this when I make a video on the UV system -- stay tuned, and thanks for the comment!
My uv leaked also. Not a bad idea.
Ouch!! Which species was that
Actually I'm not 100% sure. I lost a bunch of lyretails in QT earlier this year around the time I believe I caught the infection. I think one of them was the culprit!
The new corals look great!!
Thanks Lexi! I appreciate the encouragement -- I'm going to try to post more frequently from now on...
definition of a pick me
Thanks!
