I was a passenger on this train.. it was the most surreal experience of my life. I’ll never forget it, it crosses my mind everyday still and I’m so fortunate I survived with minor injuries. I was in the third car, it flipped onto its side. Four people in my car unfortunately died as well. It was certainly a teaching moment for Amtrak and the industry, and hopefully nothing like this ever happens again!
My thoughts and prayers to all those families and people who had a family member die in the crash or experienced the accident themselves, and the injured, you are very lucky, my deepest thoughts to you, the people in the crash, the people who died, the people injured, and their families, thank you for sharing this experience, once again, my deepest condolences to you.
@@Noah-wv4td It appears that people can be just as vindictive as they can be immature. It's just another showing of how we humans tend to behave with savagery for entertainment. Teenagers aren't exactly the smartest people out there. They don't tend to think about how their actions affect others - that part of the human psyche doesn't tend to develop until they're more mature. Doing stupid shit such as throwing rocks at trains is more of an act of childish arrogance. They aren't really looking to hurt anyone - just fuck with people in a way they think is harmless. Malevolence, on the other hand, is when you actively try to hurt people, not caring about whether you kill them or not.
I was in the second car on this train. I remember feeling it speed up but I figured we were almost there. Then I felt the train lift from the ground as we hit a turn. The cars tipped, lights broke, Windows cracked, and people flew. My friend I was riding with had a concussion from the tilt. When the train tilted I was able to catch myself, but she slammed her head against the other side of the car once it tipped. I will never forget how fortunate me and her were.

Just some critiques on the balance. In this video and several others, the music, particularly the "Not-Runaway-Theme" uncomfortably overpowers your voice. If you drop all the music by 4db and boost your voice by 4db, or just boost your voice as much as you can without clipping, that should help just enough while keeping the audio balance you intend. It's hard to pay attention when your voice is being drowned out. Maybe throw a tiny little bass boost on your voice to give it some more punch, to account for whatever microphone you're using. The music balance during the segment on Bostian's trial is pretty much spot on though. So keep that in mind.
A foamer is someone who's a little *Too* obsessed over trains who screams in excitement at ordinary trains, trespasses for "Shats of da year brah!!" or horn shows, and acts like an annoying brat. I was guilty of a few of those but I've matured as foamers tend to be under 14 years old
Not quite, the term is used to describe people who "foam at the mouth" when they see trains, although most railfans today just call themselves and their friends foamers.
Here’s a tip: always try to get into the last car on any passenger train, so if something like this does occur, that car would usually get the least amount of damage, so you have a better chance of surviving.
In the UK (I'm a train conductor there) our awful curve was at a place called Morpeth on the East coast mainline. Alot of that line is at 100, 110 or even 125 mph but the curve is severe and trains must throttle down to 70mph. There were so many wrecks on that curve that we designed a new track sign (called a 'Morpeth board' after the curve they were designed for and trialled at). They are an upside down triangle with the speed restriction posted as a warning, a couple of miles ahead of the actual restriction. They are usually accompanied by an AWS / TPWS ramp set to a constant caution to alert the driver and requiring a reset so the driver has to 'acknowledge' that he has seen the warning and will react appropriately.
I know everyone and their mom uses undertale music, but maybe the upbeat music isn't appropriate considering the subject matter? It's just kind of distracting imo
Criminalizing innocent accidents is a very dangerous thing for a transportation system. The FAA changed philosophy some years ago from "enforcement" to "compliance." Boiled down, these changes meant better systems for reporting safety risks and immunity against revocation or suspension of pilot's licenses for honest mistakes. The result for technicians, flight attendants, dispatchers, and pilots like myself is the freedom to report our mistakes and document the chain of events that led to mistakes so that they can be known to the entire aviation community. This data has been incredibly helpful to safety improvements in every part of airline travel. To criminally prosecute honest mistakes would greatly discourage the reporting of those mistakes that did not lead to accidents and thus hold back safety improvements by decades.
This WASN'T an "innocent accident". It was at least indistinguishable from a deliberate crash, since the engineer brought the speed up to 106 and only then applied the brakes. How do you know it was an "innocent accident"?

I remember this accident very clearly.. I was driving across those tracks 24 hours prior and I remember getting a very strange feeling that something wasn't right. Almost 24 hours to the minute at the same location, the train derailed. I felt so bad for thinking about negativity the day before. I know someone that passed away. He was a middle aged man who lived in my town, who previously saved my life while I was working as a lifeguard. We ended getting a tornado and he gave me shelter in his house while the storm passed. R.I.P to all the victims
When I heard about this story it was literally 2 months before making my trip to Washington DC. On my return trip back NY I got a bit nervous when traveling the same route where the incident. To this day I still love taking Amtrak from NY to DC and won't let this incident scare me. It was very sad that this happened and my condolences to the victims. Overall great job on the video and keep it up. You my friend got another subscriber.
I actually remember seeing the aftermath of this crash on T.V. when it occurred. Also, the AMTRAK engineer ranted online prior to this crash about there being a lack of safety systems. He was also reported to have loved trains since he was a child by friends and colleagues, as he would post pictures of them on his bedroom wall.
This one train wreck still haunts me to this day too. It was on all of our local news stations. On a different, but related note: I love trains and my favorite SEPTA line is the R2 Warminster line. I take it whenever I have to go to PennU Hospital for treatment. I also like to ride from the Philly airport back to Atco, NJ (after several transfers) whenever I travel by plane. Since I’m an avid rider of the NorthEast Penn line from Hamilton Station to 34th Street, Madison Square Garden Station (I never drive to NYC), the PTC delays with NJ Transit directly affects my future travel plans especially if they run out extension time. I think that Murphy has finally granted the money to NJT to upgrade our rails into Manhattan, along the Trenton line. I hope everything runs smoothly with the installs.
Same here. As I said I live not far from this incident and I've been over the curve multiple time myself. I always pray in silence every time I go over it in memory of those who died. It was on every news source not just in Philly but all across the state. Also speaking of NJT SEPTA gave 6 AEM-7s and the ALP-44 to NJT for PTC use but I hear they haven't moved from Morrisville yard yet. The fluff NJT those engines are ready to go fresh out of retirement and we have 2302 being used for parts in case anything goes bad! You helped us with SEPTAgeddon why can't we help you!? lol
9:32 I remeber this day like it was just yesterday. We pulled into Pennsylvania station and they opened the doors. I remember we were sitting there longer than usual and then they finally told us that a train in front of us hit a backhoe. Still to this day I cant believe that if I took the train before us, I would have been on that train.
I’m amazed at how you did the music (can I get a link please) and I’m also amazed how many people got able to walk away from this horrible train wreck and deeply saddened by those who didn’t rip those lives lost
I am glad to see this told by someone who actually knows something about trains. At 3:42 you say "finally" help was on the way as if to imply there was a delay in response. Was there? I hadn't heard that. I wish you would have mentioned more about the response. The scene was so large and separated by wrecked cars that it had to be divided into two parts for command purposes. It was difficult for the commanders to gauge the enormity of the situation because they could not see the entire scene at once. Eventually they climbed up on a track crossing bridge. Also as usually happens in situations like this, people with no or minor injuries started walking away from the scene before being assessed or counted by responders. this makes it difficult to know if someone is still trapped in the debris. While train control might have prevented this so would a second person in the cab. In an airliner one person is flying and one person is communicating on the radio. Finally in times when there is increased engineer workload such as sharp turns, grade crossings and station stops they should adopt the "sterile cockpit" rule. Nothing should distract the engineer from operating the train and unless the radio is telling you to stop immediately you should be ignoring it.
This tragedy could easily have been prevented with a simple signal change forcing speeds down to 45 approaching the 50 MPH curve eastbound, as the westbound signals already did. I suspect that's one reason the engineer got off despite being "distracted" by radio talk about a thrown rock, which is a common event in N. Philly and is part of the job.
wtf. this is a documentary. not a video game documentary. how to hell am i supposed to take you seriously with megalovania in the backround. this is not cool man

I just realized sometimes. The chase Maryland included the prototype AEM7 locomotive that went into service right? This incident had the prototype ACS that went to service. That to me is a very strange and scary coincidence. 🤔🤔🤔
At 1:35 it states that the train was leaving Philadelphia next stop Trenton but stated earlier it was said the train was heading Boston to Washington so instead of Trenton being the next stop it would of been Wilmington instead it was going Washington to New York not Boston to Washington
Other than the music for this video, I really like your videos. I'm extremely sad for all of the lives lost. The history of these crashes help in New technology and safety procedures to keep more people safe. Keep up the good work 😃

thank you much for this video. thank you for demonstrating to you tube brothers that even in this newfangled day we live in, we must still have respect for the dead.
I was in 4th grade at the time. I used my tablet for stuff in class a lot and remember getting a news alert. I recognized the place because it was in the Philly area where I used to live. Months after the derailment I was still almost crying at the thought of what my fellow Philadelphia natives wouldve been through. It still leaves a scar in my memory to this day. We must never forget 🙏❤ #PhilaUnite
Okay, but auto emergency braking would not have been much use as the crash happened anyway. The biggest problem was speed and no signal warning. In the UK, rail speed limits are clearly sign posted, speed reduction warnings are also clearly signposted. Some are backed up with AWS as a very basic system to give the driver a heads-up as they are about to pass them, the driver must acknowledge the warning by clearing the alarm within a couple of seconds. A critical approach would of course use TPWS to back it up. But its the signalling that confuses me. Surely the train can't pass a signal if the train ahead hasn't passed the signal ahead? We have fixed block signalling meaning a train must not enter the same area (block) as the preceding train. So much opportunity for error on the USA rail system...
In America which has a Lot more mileage of track than the UK its more expensive to do that and in areas outside of the NEC its freight company's that own the tracks and stations Amtrak just operates services and the stations
Because seatbelts on trains or buses are pointless. They would be rather uncomfortable if they were a thing in those types of seats. Plus it's the driver's job to make sure that they don't need to come to a sudden stop.
glad you added the blooper XD i had a good laugh ngl even with bein sick an all but i love the videos keep it up i love train history or ya know any kinda history at that
I live pretty much on a 180 Year old train line ( In northern england ) with the first flying buttraced cutting for a trainline. I dont know alot about the us lines. But here they are mass hot on safety eco and less noise. The line is getting a huge retrofitting of 25KV overhead lines ( Preston to Manchester Via Bolton ) alowing for faster trains. But how much difference is there on the british stuff than in the us. I know speeds are different and some of the sets.
I actually live in South Philly. I don’t remember much in the moment since I was about 4 or 5 at the time, but researching about it a few years later due to my love for trains in the 2nd grade, I found out & gave me the same chills as the locals & victims just a few years before. May the dead from the accident Rest In Peace.
This was all over the news. If you drive on the highway you can see the turn where the trains go. For awhile my mom did not want me to take Amtrack cause of this. I eventually took Amtrack again last year and it was fine but still I was worried cause i had to get off at Trenton.
If you check out my much older videos I've made quite a few trips to W&W. One of which was to see the Pennsy Bug 4662. I do plan on a revisit someday as I haven't been there in years. Boy do some of the old videos make me cringe though
The song in your credits that you said is the one where you fight Sans in undertale is called Megalovania. RIP Amtrak 601 and Amtrak 627. 😭😭 And do you ever feel like there is a ghost train of that train sometimes which is why you get the chills partially?
Not really like a ghost but I just remember what happened there, the people who died, not to mention it's a miracle 601 didn't knock over those tankers in the background or this could of been way worse.
Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions I feel if I come to a site of a train crash from years ago in the ded of night I will see a ghost train of that wrecked train.
A jury, showing s lot more sense than the prosecution, acquitted Bostian after 90 minutes of deliberation in 2022. The local prosecutors had clearly decided that this wasn't a criminal case and had dropped the case, but a bloodthirsty judge ordered them to reinstate the charges. The prosecutors refused and recused themselves, so the case was turned over to the State. What disgusts me is that there was no prosecution in the 1999 City of New Orleans wreck in Illinois, caused by the driver of a tractor-trailer *deliberately* driving around lowered crossing gates and past flashing red lights. What part of "willful" don't these legal beagles understand? P.S. Having moved to the Philly area between the wreck and the trial, I had the dubious satisfaction of voting against the extension of the judge's tenure last year, but of course he won anyway. The real perpetrators, a Government and an Amtrak organization that shiuld have installed vanilla cab signalling fifty years ago, was never prosecuted.

You helped us with SEPTAgeddon why can't we help you!? lol
I take that route often
..still get chills going around that curve....
188 was running Washington to Boston, not the other way around.
Side note: Who else heard Undertale and Thomas the Tank Engine Music?
This tragedy could easily have been prevented with a simple signal change forcing speeds down to 45 approaching the 50 MPH curve eastbound, as the westbound signals already did. I suspect that's one reason the engineer got off despite being "distracted" by radio talk about a thrown rock, which is a common event in N. Philly and is part of the job.
wtf. this is a documentary. not a video game documentary. how to hell am i supposed to take you seriously with megalovania in the backround. this is not cool man
Randomness Prime hahaha. So funny.
Quit crying like a bitch and give him some credit! These take him ours at a time to do! He added the song for a reason, and NOT to offend anyone! Quit wining! >:(
The dude in the wreck at the top of the comment section wasn't complaining.
@@kaboomdotexe stop crying like a bitch and learn to spell properly
@@kaboomdotexe Megalovania in a documentary... Let that sink in.
07:00 - I was about to comment how TPWS would’ve prevented this wreck, but then you covered that in the video! Nice work
R.I.P Amtrak 188
we will remember you
HOLD UP, YOU WERE IN THE 188? THATS WHY YOU SAY "I still get the chills every time i got trough that same curve"? THAT´S CRAZY DUDE
I'm up in Allentown and I remember when this happened. I'm so glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
I would say that you have first hand information about this crash. I remember it, from news accounts. Thanks for the video.
Crazy how they had Actual footage of it happening..
I don't think undertale music is good with this topic
why ?
Our Federal Government sends Billions of $$ to Other Countries, they need to start supporting the Infrastructure of our Own Country Like they Should be doing , and not make the struggling companies foot the whole will
The government is not meant to help the people the people need to help the people
america has a lot of debt
I just realized sometimes. The chase Maryland included the prototype AEM7 locomotive that went into service right? This incident had the prototype ACS that went to service. That to me is a very strange and scary coincidence. 🤔🤔🤔
1:57 I THOUGHT THIS WAS A SHORT RUNAWAY THEME
Love the panhandling footage you left in! 🤣
At 1:35 it states that the train was leaving Philadelphia next stop Trenton but stated earlier it was said the train was heading Boston to Washington so instead of Trenton being the next stop it would of been Wilmington instead it was going Washington to New York not Boston to Washington
Correct it was heading north not south.. Frankfort Junction is north of 30th St not south
When you put undertale music in these I sees paps and sans foaming
It's Thomas & Friends music.
Mix of both.
0:08 This picture reminds me of the subway tunnel scene from Volcano.
Other than the music for this video, I really like your videos. I'm extremely sad for all of the lives lost. The history of these crashes help in New technology and safety procedures to keep more people safe. Keep up the good work 😃
M8 this wasn’t the driver’s fault, the ghosts of scrapped AEM-7s are getting revenge on their replacements! (Alsoooo I may be becoming the Justin Y of these videos)
How do you know it "wasn't the driver's fault"?
R.I.P. AEM-7s
this is not something to joke about
And the AEM 7s 900 and 903 from the 1987 Chase Maryland collision
@@wharris302 i totally agree with you because these people poor die 😩
I remember the day when that same wreck came on the news, it was horrific just to see it on my television, and I can’t even imagine how traumatic it was for those on the train, and those who were have my condolences...
thank you much for this video. thank you for demonstrating to you tube brothers that even in this newfangled day we live in, we must still have respect for the dead.
Great channel and great content, I never knew how many train crashes there has actually been.
This channel needs more subscribers
I was in 4th grade at the time. I used my tablet for stuff in class a lot and remember getting a news alert. I recognized the place because it was in the Philly area where I used to live. Months after the derailment I was still almost crying at the thought of what my fellow Philadelphia natives wouldve been through. It still leaves a scar in my memory to this day.
We must never forget 🙏❤ #PhilaUnite
2:45 at least it did not crash into those tankers then THAT whould have been REALLY BAD.
Same thing happen a year ago in DuPont, wa. So much for learning from your mistakes
TURN DOWN the music towards the middle of the video! Other than that, gr8 info
Thank You
I totally forgot about this accident! Being a PA resident myself, I thank you for reminding me of this.
There should be track speed sensors. How can we have PTC without speed sensors?
The USA has a pretty bad passenger rain system because it does not get enough funding in most states
A smartphone has a GPS receiver. Why not just program a smartphone to monitor speed, and compare it with maximum speed limits?
Also North America trains do not have buffers on them like they do in the U.K. and other European countries.
What’s the song when the video played
Wait, what about the runaway theme in the credits? You didn't include it!
That technically wasn't the runaway theme. It was a theme based on the Runaway melody
Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions could you link it for me?
R.I.P. Amtrak 601!!!!! Maybe come back soon!!!!!!!
I guess you'll do a similar video for the anniversary of the similar Cascades crash near Seattle, right?
Yet another example of incompetent engineers causing a crash due to what should have been obvious overspeed.
Very true the 2017 Washington train derailment happened almost a year ago. It was a disaster and sorry for those injured and who died.
That intro was straight out of a horror short film. Nice documentary.
Probably the best part of the whole video, the rest... oh boy I kinda dropped the ball here
I don’t think it’s that bad. All of the documentaries are pretty good, and this is one of the earlier ones, if I recall correctly
4 Years Now 😭 That Was My Favorite Amtrak Train
2 months earlier before this crash, Amtrak’s Carolinian Train Number 80 in Halifax NC collided with a tractor trailer at a grade crossing
The one thing I don’t get is why there aren’t seatbelts on trains. They should add those soon.
Same with buses (including large school buses)
The truth is nobody will fasten them. People just don't do that. I always have feeling i'm the only one which does that, when I'm on a intercity bus.
Because seatbelts on trains or buses are pointless. They would be rather uncomfortable if they were a thing in those types of seats. Plus it's the driver's job to make sure that they don't need to come to a sudden stop.
I ride a school bus and you get thrown around a lot it’s very dangerous if it crashes you can get thrown around it’s very dangerous
glad you added the blooper XD i had a good laugh ngl even with bein sick an all but i love the videos keep it up i love train history or ya know any kinda history at that
2:09 the footage is scary
This was pretty much a local accident for me too as I am from Reading PA only a hour west of Philly I remember this being all over the news
I've gone over the actual curve a number of times on SEPTA. I still get the chills there.
1:01 May 12th 2015? That the day of Thomas the Tank Engine 70th anniversary
random question, thunderbolt: are you ever going to railfan the wilmington and western railroad? it is in northern delaware.
Harrison La time traveler The song is a rip off of "First Flight"
In the first clip that the train is moving the song playing is the Thomas and friends runaway theme.
3:54 not sure if anybody has noticed, but there’s an error in your recording. The line repeats twice by mistake.
I think he stopped to double check
I’m just binge watching these for the day
4:19 nutter
My head:nutter butter
I remember I came home from a baseball game when I heard about this. Pretty sad moment
I like the bloopers, they make me smile even though I just saw a tragedy.
6:30 what locomotive(s) was pulling the train
PRR GG1 4930. It remained upright and did not derail
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren Wow. I was about to remake the wreck in trainz and I don't have anything close to a GG1. Guess I'll have to use the closest thing to a ACS-64 :(
