The last in our current series of Night In streaming programmes is here, and you can enjoy the first 15 minutes for FREE. This last trip to the Didsbury studios is the 13th in our series of hand-curated Nights In. David Hamilton invites you to one final evening of classic and rare ABC Television entertainment from the 1960s, with some special surprises - even from the man himself!
    HERE'S DAVID NIXON: SHOW 13: 22 DECEMBER 1963
Over a thirty-year career in television, David Nixon's subtle brand of magic and comedy was loved by millions. In the autumn of 1963 he created a series of shorts that showcased his skills as an illusionist that were recorded by ABC in front of a studio audience.
David bemuses and enthrals the studio audience with some tricks that feature some a teacup, a fork, some newsreading... and Big Ben!
SPACE PATROL: THE SHRINKING GAS OF JUPITER
This is Earth - the year 2100 - and these are the adventures of cult hit Space Patrol!
Join Galasphere 347 and its intrepid crew on their voyages around the solar system: heroic Captain Dart, elfin Slim, sausage-mad Husky, Irish genius Professor Haggerty, mad Martian parrot Gabbler - and, keeping them all on a tight rein, Colonel Raeburn and his super-efficient secretary, Marla!
A strange jittering is affecting the city and other Earth locations.
PLUS: Counter Attack, The Cheaters, Big Night Out, Miss Adventure, This is Sinatra, Armchair Theatre and Goodbye from ABC.

What's your favourite show from the ABC archives? Anything we haven't got online yet?

David Dixon is so charming and daft. Don't know why he's not better remembered.

Nixon (although I bet your spellchecker did that). I think the problem is that he was never repeated much after his death. ITV didn't really do repeats in those days and so no new generations discovered him, which is a shame.

ABC TV were a great station. They brought us the genre we call Adult Education in 1963 originally, beginning with Auto-Mechanics, the 13-parter that when I first saw it at an early age got me into cars in the first place. The DVDs of ABC Nights In are currently available via Amazon, and I intend to buy them presently, judging by what they have to offer. There are five of them available at the moment.

Out of This World, alas only one episode survives (Little Lost Robot) but it's available as a DVD from the BFI. Comes with a nice booklet, commentary track, off air soundtrack recordings of two otherwise lost episodes and an alternative restoration of the surviving episode.

Yes quite so, it has a certain charm to it unmatched by any other show. Now, having extensively watched the launch video of the space patrol box set, I always have a chill down my spine knowing before it was largely lost

A pity a lot of these old shows don’t survive - they could either issue them on DVD complete or - as far as possible - put some of the old announcers in there and get them to host it like David Hamilton does here and broadcast a mixed showcase - and even include commercial breaks with commercials from the era - not necessarily the actual commercials within the programme, but geared towards the audience - can’t put commercials for beer and cigars in the commercial break of a kids’ show or adverts for kids’ toys in a programme aimed at an adult audience!
That should be 2:45 - 3:45 is a quarter to four!
