I got to a point where I no longer enjoyed shopping because I realized that, no matter what I buy, I will still be me… just with another item. So, I started there.
Due to a hurricane, I had to start almost from zero. I bought my enough and few extras only in the areas that are important for me. Example: I love to cook, then I bought more items than enough because it’s almost a hubby. I’m enjoying the simplicity and having everything for a reason. There are no extras in closets. Feels light and good. It was awesome that I followed you before. It helped into my mindset. Instead of thinking I lost all, I thought the hurricane took care of the minimalist process. lol
Right before this video, I watched Dana K. White explain what she calls "the container concept". You can only have what your home, your cupboard - your container - whatever its size - can reasonably hold. Everything else has to go because the container, the thing that should CONTAIN your items, the container is full. This was a great followup to her video.
You both popped into my head individually the other day as I was going about my business and I thought...they are such beautiful people. I’m so glad you two exist. You have enriched my life ❤️
Thanks you guys. 7 years ago you changed my life with your first book. Total fan. Almost 6 years ago in June...Ryan hugged my Mom when I "dragged" her to an event you had in Denver 7 days after my Dad passed. She is 84 years old now. YESTERDAY she said for those 2 hours her mind went somewhere else....she realized she would need to let go with stuff (eventually) ....( I have 23 items clothes. I got it.) For her, she HAD 12 yellow shirts...now she HAS 2. We are all works in progress. Please be mindful for people not to throw stuff away. Donate. Give. Let go....it is freedom. (Put sacks for homeless in your car. ( Tshirt. Socks.a book.mini shampoo toothpaste lotion ftom all those motel stays. Blanket...GIVE)
How about ENOUGH BS in your life. Emotional baggage and ENOUGH NEGATIVITY in your life and MINIMIZING PEOPLE in your life. Sometimes it just happens on it's own. Give yourself some peace and clear the MATERIAL and EMOTIONAL CLUTTER!
We want more not only for a scarcity mindset and fear, but above all because we don't feel like we ARE enough, we spend money in order to fill the void we feel inside (and advertising know that perfectly). Thank guys for your precious podcast!
enough for me is having a home where everything has it's place. Knowing where everything is, means you know what you have and it has it's spot. No kitchen cabinets stuffed with random kitchen stuff, or an attic full of boxes you have no idea what's in them. Thanks for your videos they are very inspiring and helpful.
I am reminded of a book that a harmful “ friend” gave me. I got so excited to see the inscription of what I hoped for years of them to become. It only clouded the 99.9% of harm I experienced. So, I shredded it and finally let it go. There was some periods of remorse, but I am reminded of how keeping it kept me controlled by that harmful friendship. Which was not a friendship. Keeping harmful things out if a glimmer of hope is something to look at as far as letting go of the past to begin healing.
This is one of the reasons I got rid of my cell phone. I want my friends and family to feel like they are important enough to get my undivided attention.
Nancy Millet - if they're staring at their screen while visiting you, then - really, your company is not enough. They obviously want to be doing something different...🌹

I gotta suggest that hunter gatherers probably did store food. They may have had nomadic camps, but gathering more or extra for later, even within a few days, is still easier than going foraging every day. Even during the paleolithic tribal times, I think human groups would still care for their vulnerable and elderly, so bringing back extra food to basecamp for grandpa and grandma would make sense. We as human throughout our evolution probably didn't evolve to grow old by just abandoning grandpa and grandma for dead, after they couldn't go out and forage anymore, because they provided additional childcare and passed down knowledge. Also hunter gatherers during the winter would gather food for winter to caves, which is probably why europe has so much cave art. It's not food season all the time in upper/lower latitudes on planet earth, further from the equator. Nature gave us our first primal fears, and so our ancient fears drive us to hoard necessities, and ended up discovering things like cheeses, aged meats, dried fruit and fermented foods like beer, mead, cider, kimchi, sourkraut amd natto.
I have a teenager and I do want a pallet of toilet even though we live in a two bedroom apartment. I don’t know what that kid does, but we go through a lot. I think she uses gobs of it to take her make up off. And I supply 100% organic cotton swab pads for that. I would also like to find a 50 gallon barrel. Of vinegar. I use a lot of that!

I think an understanding of enough is helpful even if we don’t live within that confine everyday. We stayed at a VRBO townhouse with 3 bedrooms and just the basics. Our family of 6 was just fine and made it work. Came back home to a house that was 1000 sq ft bigger and realized we had way MORE than enough. Gratitude is more important than a set number of things and enough is a place that teaches us that.

I think we are using massive amounts of "stuff" to fill the enormous holes in our hearts & souls as we seek to find our TRUE selves. When we enter this world, if we are a girl, we should like pink, play with dolls, strive to be pretty, have a big wedding, have children, etc. If we are a boy, we should like blue, play with cars/trucks, play sports, be successful in business, etc. All too often these "lies" and "social norms" are perpetuated by the very people who "love" us. We have been brainwashed for far too long. First of all, know that YOU ARE ENOUGH! What is truly IMPORTANT to you? Everything you bring into your house demands your time and attention. What makes your heart happy? Pay attention to what is important to you. My mindset is: "I am thankful that I will always have more than enough". Currently, I make $12,000 - $14,000 a year, my house is paid off, my car is paid off, I save money every month, have good friends, and enjoy my cat & making art. All is well in my world. Periodically I'll re-assess how I use my belongings. I am thankful for knowing myself better every day and being able to release the items (and sometimes people) that no longer serve me.
What do you need? You need things to keep your physical body upright and moving. You need things to be socially acceptable....what is socially acceptable? Clothing? Toilet? Piped in water? This is where the hording comes in. What is necessary?
Guys I need your help. I have enough. I know I have enough. But I feel like I need more. The mindset is what I struggle with. I come from a successful family where everyone has achieved so much. I feel like I’m constantly struggling to reach the same level of “success” It’s draining. I am married to a beautiful wife, have a wonderful handsome son, a really nice house, a good job. BUT I struggle with feeling comfortable with… my job. My salary. My success. I am constantly comparing myself to others and feeling undervalued and underpaid at my job. Feeling as though I haven’t reached success yet. In the back of my mind I am successful. I listen to you guys and feel so content. Then the thoughts creep back in telling me I am not where we need to be. How do you maintain the healthy mentality and break the cycle of not feeling good enough?

Humans first show up in the fossil record during the last ice age. Agriculture showed up after we entered the interglacial period that began 9,000 years ago. Before that agriculture wasn't possible due to climate. It's thanks to the interglacial period and steady climate that allows us to have agriculture, and thus a high tech society. This will end sometime within the next 200-1500 years (depends on how much work we humans put into pushing it off), and the climate will move into the next ice age.
