Great video, I have noticed the increase in quality now that you have a new laptop. The appeal in your videos for me is that they are like scholarly articles but in video form. Unlike many other videos about history, you discuss your sources in depth and give clear and concise explanations as to their reliability. I look forward to more videos in this series about Nogai, keep it up!
By the way, I think there is a small audio issue in this video. The audio of you talking is only hearable on the left channel, i.e. if you use stereo headphones, the audio of you talking comes only from the left ear.

Thank you! That is what I aim for with this. It's actually a good writing experiment to try and condense a more detailed explanation into appropriate format for UA-cam, so I always enjoy them.
I've noticed the audio issue now as well. I haven't the faintest issue where that came from, as it seemed fine with editing and I've never had the problem before. I'll have to try and explore what happened.

    A couple thoughts:
    - roles and activities of Tamma commanders in eastern Europe would be interesting to expand on - your interview with Dr Michal Holescak related to nomadic incursions in this period was very informative
    - I always thought that 'Nogai the person' and 'Nogai the horde' had some connection! It would be great if you could touch on this in a future video - was there not even a ancestral use of the name that was passed down over the generations?
    Good to have you back!

    • @TheJackmeisterMongolHistory
      @TheJackmeisterMongolHistory  3 роки тому

Most of what I said here in this video will be touched upon in further episodes; including the matter of the tammachi (I will be detailing my evidence for this claim, and why I think it is more explanatory of Nogai's role that other suggestions to his position).
The Nogai and Nogai Horde matter is an interesting one I will also explain. Essentially, the Nogai Horde originates with the sons of Edigu, in the region north of the Caspian Sea. Edigu, despite a few claims, had no ancestry or relation to 13th century Nogai. Further, the 13th century Nogai is never known to have lived or inhabited that northern-Caspian area: his entire career largely took place in the westernmost part of the khanate on the border of Europe, so it is hard to argue for a memory of him specifically. Neither is there any 13th or 14th century source which connects Nogai to the Manghit tribe, one of the core tribes of the Nogai Horde.
The name of the Horde essentially is the only "evidence" for a connection. But a number of scholars have argued that the Nogai of Nogai Horde is an entirely different etymological origin from Prince Nogai's name (which is from the Mongolian for Dog). Even if it came from the Mongol word, it is hardly an uncommon name for Mongols. We know multiple figures named Nogai or some variation of it (especially Qara-Nogai). There is additional evidence to the matter that I will present as well, but these are the main points.

Will you make videos about other tribes that existed in Mongolia after the series about Nogai Khan? Like the Tatars, Merkits and Keraites? Not much people know about those tribes and whereabouts of their descendants today. Most Mongol, Turkic or Tungus historians don't seem to care about those great Khanates that once shook the Mongol empire and gave a hard time to Genghis himself. It would be nice to see a video about Merkits or Keraites. Anyways, good video!

It's a topic I would also like to better learn about. I have had in my head an idea about stuff on 11th and 12th century Mongolia for a long time, focusing on the Liao Dynasty rule, Khamag Mongol etc. Stuff on the Naiman, Merkit and other tribes would fit in nicely there.

@@TheJackmeisterMongolHistory it's interesting how Mongols asimilated among kipchaks.. Look at names of golden horde khans from some moment they getting more turkic, kipchak names. Actually names very interesting topic. Some names becoming a title. Some titles become to be name. Chingizkhan is a title, but now chengiz is usual name in turkic nations. Bek is a turkic title for.. Tribes head ruler, or a place.. Similar to European feudal titles. So it's not coincidence that it appears in the names of.. Özbek, Dzganibek, Ulugbek. Word BEy same to Bek. So I bet it's not coincidence that it in the name of Beybars. May be he was sold as child without name just with words.. This is a boy from nobel tribe, he a son of BEK.. Of tribe bars. You get the picture.. Beybars. Interesting story with names and titles in mid and late Nogaic horde. Rulers wasn't chengiz descendants. And sometimes names of Nogaic noblemen became as titles, which could be found in Russian documents. But that titles didn't last long. BTW Nogaic title Myrza, which also have a meaning similar to.. Senior, Lord. In modern time quite usual name in turkic nations

This is similar to how I feel. After reapproaching the sources, I rally got the feeling that he would have been perfect happy managing his territory in the Balkans, but kept getting drawn into Golden Horde politics. Even when he helps get Toqta in the throne in 1291, the first thing he does is immediately return to his own territory. Same thing after his first victory over Toqta in their civil war. To me, that doesn't feel like the actions of someone who wanted to exert power over the entire Golden Horde

For me as a mongolian this whole history after Chinggis Khaan is sad. Centuries of game of thrones, so many leaders and warriors put to death by poison, they didn't die as a warrior on the battlefield. If Chinggis Khan lived for a decade more and chose rulers like him that would destroy the tribal differences even more, perhaps mongols would have been more successful in passing down power from one khaan to the next one. I guess if mongols didn't fight between themselves, they would have been way to op for others. Tengri!

Not much is known about hpw Temujin died but in Mongolia there is a folk rumour that after defeating the XiXia he took the XiXia emperor's wife who, while being coerced into becoming a concubine of Temujin, bit off the Khan's phallus which caused the Khan to die from blood loss.
Initially after conquoring the XiXia Ghengis did not have intentions to massacre those who surrendered without resistance, however after the act of this woman, Ghengis, realozing he was about to die, gave orders to decimate the former kingdom, which is why such little records of XiXia exists today (destroyed).
Can you provide some due dilligence or insider information on this? Or is it total bullshit commoners made up to in order to mentally belittle someone who is so much more accomplished, capable, and superior thay they themselves are.

I've previously done a video on what the various 13th century sources say on his death, which you can watch here. ua-cam.com/video/hzhY3accFZM/v-deo.html
The "death during intercourse" story does not appear until some 200 or so years after his death, and nothing resembling it shows up in the sources closet to when he actually lived. So the authenticity of it we can almost immediately discard (in my opinion, it seems he suffered a fall from his horse while hunting, either just before or during the Xi Xia campaign. It probably caused some internal injuries which were not given adequate time to heal, and the rigours of the campaigns aggravated them. Either this directly led to his death, or it made him weak enough that he was susceptible to some disease or illness that finally carried him off in August 1227). The story appears in the ca. 16th century renewal in Mongolian history writing. It's suspected that it originated during the period of non-Chinggisid Oirat dominance in Mongolia (essentially the entire 1400s), who wanted to, at least somewhat, diminish Chinggis' standing.
Further, I was recently at a conference where Dr. Christopher Atwood offered the likely origins of the queen in the story. In the story, Chinggis takes a Tangut Princess, there called Gürbilchin, to be his new wife after the conquest of the Tangut. She hides a knife within herself, which then is implied to cut Chinggis' penis when he goes to have sex with her. Now, the account bears no relation to anything described in 13th century sources, and no princess Tangut called Gürbilchin is known to have existed... but Dr. Atwood suggests that it was a garbled version of a bridge Chinggis did have: the Khatun of the Naiman tribe called Gürbelsü. Chinggis takes her as a (lesser) wife once he conquered the Naiman, and then nothing is known of her afterthat. But it appears folk memory may have preserved her name and resistance among the Mongols who had fought against Chinggis, and overtime transformed her name, as well as her nationality, then gets molded into a story to explain Chinggis' death.
I've yet to see an explanation, other than what I've listed above, that does a good job accounting for these details. I find the notion that "this was what actually happened, but the Mongols stopped anyone from spreading it until it could be written down 200 years later!" to be frankly preposterous. There's so many versions of Chinggis Khan's death in the 13th/early 14th century sources, yet absolutely none of them describe anything remotely approaching the Gürbilchin story .

Nogai could have raised the vlachs to an elite level..We didn't accept it...Shame on us, we could have learnt a lot of war tactiques from the Mongols...Hristos să te ierte şi să te odihnească, Hane Noğai...But if it was for Nogai and not for Tokhtamir to rule Wallachia, Romanians would have ben muslim today. Though, Christ had other plans.

Kazakhs ruled the Golden Horde, this is our history, not a Mongol, and Genghis Khan was a Kazakh. And their names were not Mongols, but Mughals. The history of Kazakhstan was rewritten by Russia and China. And the capital of Genghis Khan, Karakorum, is located on the territory of Kazakhstan, in the Bukhtarma reservoir on the Irtysh River, which was flooded in the USSR. All tribes live on the territory of Kazakhstan. All Kazakh khans were Chingizids, This is the history of the Kazakhs, the Mongols have nothing to do with Genghis Khanau, you are looking for in Kazakhstan. And the Europeans called us Tatars, the Chinese - yuan, and these lands - Tartaria. If you check, their names are all Kazakh
