    Wow Highly, the way you are sorting out these sentences is very cool. You are 'cutting' them in pieces and then translate and make it into the Dutch sentence again. Well done! Plus your pronunciation is spot on!

    First indeed on thin ice. Sneeuw schuiven, means you move the snow out of the way. Sjaal is scarf, muts like a beanie. If rain freezes, it will get very slippery, so you have to be careful . For the birds they lay down extra food like peanuts. Bustling fire warms the living room warm. Spek is bacon, but when used with glad... is very very slippery . Overwinteren, stay in place to get through the winter. You did great!

    Your Dutch has improved so much since you've started this! The correct pronunciation surprised me the most on the word "glad" as most English speaking would automatically pronounce it the English way.

    Great how you understand our language. And handy if you ever visit the Netherlands. Especially if you walk around in Amsterdam on King's Day, then you can really see that we Dutch are a bit strange, but very nice and friendly. So keep your spirits up when learning our language. Toi, toi, toi!

    Spekglad is a fun one (Slippery as bacon). You should use this if something is slippery from /or like grease.
    If something is slippery from it being a smooth surface it should be ; Spiegelglad (mirror smooth) (So smooth/slippery it has a reflection)

  • @TheJoaveck
    @TheJoaveck 19 днів тому +2

    Glad has multiple meanings. Google might say smooth but here it means slippery. A 'glad' surface has less friction

    Slippery bacon made me giggle so much. You're not exactly wrong, either. Spek = bacon, and glad = slippery. But in context it means it's extremely slippery outside

    "overwinteren" is a basically variation on "overleven" (surviving). It means to get through/to survive the winter. It translates to the English verb "to hibernate".

    • @irisvb8343
      @irisvb8343 19 днів тому +3

      Nog even een kleine toevoeging over onze gecompliceerde taal 😂Overleven of ontwijken. Surviving or avoiding.
      Hibernation is one way to "overwinter" if you take it more literally it would mean over(the)winter. It's like a way to skip the winter. Hibernation is one option to do that. As well as the migration of birds. Or Dutch who go to Spain for 3 months to overwinter.

    You did well! And you are right to question our ways of saying things! Somtimes it is like: Het slaat als een tang op een varken!
    In this last phrase it means there is no logic to this. Literally it states "It beats like pliers on a pig. But in this case in dutch -het slaat nergens op- means it is bullocks, it does not mean anything. It doesn't mean that you are beating a pig with pliers! In this way of saying 'Het slaat als een tang op een varken' usually it means that you are responding to a statement of comparison that holds no truth or reality. so you are dismissing their argument or view to total rubbish! I love being Dutch! 😀

    "Glad" actually means both smooth and slippery, depending on context. Glad geschoren = smooth shaven. Het is glad = it is slippery.

    If you replace the ‘sch’ from the words by ‘sh’ you can make a good guess

  • @baskoning9896
    @baskoning9896 19 днів тому +1

    'Glad's meaning depends on context a bit: you can shave your chin 'glad' (smooth), but if the rain freezes over on the streets, the road will be 'glad' (slippery). And if you dress up slick you might look 'glad'. Also if you talk like a sale person, people might call you 'glad' (smooth talker, as in friendly but not so trustworthy).

    • @baskoning9896
      @baskoning9896 19 днів тому

      A bear will 'overwinter' (hibernate) in a cave. Some people move to Florida (or Spain etc) in the winter to 'overwinter' (as in sit out the cold winter at home in a warm place)

    Spekglad dates back to Dutch whale hunting when whale blubber made the deck nearly impossible to tread…

  • @MasterSandman
    @MasterSandman 18 днів тому

    You did pretty good! Not too shabby on pronunciation either! 👍
    Only why did you reverse the order on "spekglad"? Cause literally that wouldn't translate to "slippery bacon", but "bacon-slippery"... now wouldn't it? 😉
    As in "slippery as bacon"...
    And "haardvuurtje" isn't a fireplace, it's actually the fire inside the fireplace.
    It literally translates to "hearthfire".
    "Voedsel" is indeed food and "pinda's" are peanuts! Very good for birds, lots of energy and oils.
    "Overwinteren" is an action, not a method.
    It means to stay somewhere to 'over'come the 'winter'.
    For example, you have a cabin somewhere, with plenty of food and wood to make yourself a "haardvuurtje" (😜) and survive the low temperatures and the ten feet of snow that will keep you there all winter.

  • @TheJoaveck
    @TheJoaveck 19 днів тому +2
