Can I just say it is such a refreshing change to hear somebody use proper Latin pronunciation. While I've got nothing against the anglicised names we use today, it makes it feel more genuine to hear more or less how their names actually sounded.
It's important to note his popularity skyrocketed around 63 B.C.E when he stopped Catalina and other conspirators from overthrowing Rome. He earned the title Father of the Republic. He himself deemed this day the greatest moment of his life. That popularity sustained him through turbulent times in the republic.
This video helped fixed the last part of washing vulgate latin sounds out of my head! Thank you! I’m a huge fan of the moody middle class orator, no matter how much he went from enthusiasm to self pity within his letters to Atticus, you’ve done a great job of making this succinct and absolutely close to the sorta meticulousness and pride I associate with Cicero :)
I’ve just started reading a translation of the Brutus for fun and this video is a brilliant introduction to Cicero - told me everything I needed to know, from how to pronounce his name correctly to the essence of his political thought. Fantastic work, thank you.
Thank you so much for making this video! Helped me a lot in a test for my Political government course! What helped me here was how Cicero's ideology was explained well and that he's a conservative.
i dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Boone Luke thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Thank you, this was good. I am writing a story with a fictional character who tries to follow precepts of Aristotle and Cicero while working in an Intelligence position during the Cold War.
This is so useful, thank you... 2022 and im preparing for my law of Jurisprudence exam with this video amongst my study material... South Africa, #NorthWestUniversity
This is a great overview of Cicero's life and beleifs. This was an enjoyable and informative video, and I am citing it in an essay for my college rhetoric course! Thank you so much for sharing!
Great video, mate. I've just finished reading De Republica and I'm presently looking for explanations. :D I'm kidding, it was an easier read than I expected. As a matter of fact, I expected more from the book about the mixed constitution. It's the subject that interests me the most, as a conservative, and I still feel like I need to know more about it to fully understand it.
De Inventione is an important text you didn't mention. Its argument is essentially that oratory and rhetoric are political sciences. Also, philosophically, Cicero loved eloquence and praised it highly in every book.
Great video, so informative! Thank you for the list for further reading! I own many of his books, and planning to read some very soon! Is Political Speeches (Oxford World's Classics) is a good place to start? 😊🙌
Nice to hear classical for once. Some liberties seem to have been taken with the pronunciation of ae though - as far as I am aware it really was a diphthong.
At first I thought I saw Keegan-Michael Key from Key & Peele doing the video lecture. That would have been rather funny if Key could do a video lecture as Obama's Anger Translator Luther.

Absolute great name, though i really din't get why the latin pronounciations, i mean, we know latin c always sounds as a k, and the r is always as a 'angry dog' but why?
His ideas don’t seem very useful. How do you measure prudentia? It is like saying a good leader has to be great. ‘Great’ is even more ambiguous but prudentia is pretty ambiguous as well. Was Gandhi less of a leader because he was less authoritative by some definition of that word?
No. That's the Italian prounciation, and is wrong. Latin was not pronounced as Italian is now: the language has changed over the course of 2,000 years. The "ch" sound did not exist in classical Latin. The man in this video is pronouncing classical Latin correctly.
I know that we don’t know the Latin pronunciation - but please never ever say Cicero like that again. It is pronounced Sissero - after hearing your pronunciation I lost all respect for him - sounds like a donkey farmer or something. Great presentation otherwise those - really wonderful
I don't understand why this channel is nowhere near as popular as is should be. Will definitely be sharing these brilliant videos.
That's a tremendous compliment, thank you very much! :)
Henry Savage Henry pal! how are you doing? Revising much for the May exams?
The delivery is a bit dry for youtube's tastes, but the content seems to be very high quality.
A truly informational and educational experience! I loved the Classical Latin pronunciation and thank you for this lecture x1000

Beautiful presentation!

Shame he died with the republic.
I like the moderators pronunciation of Cicero.

He said Cicero correctly!
Why do you pronounce his name like that?
Because that's how it is pronounced. He nailed it.

I thought his name is pronounced “See-sero” not “kee-Kerro”? Lol 😂
He is pronouncing his name the Latin way. Also in Italian his name is
pronounced "Chi-ka-ro' ... Cicero.
It's sissero
@@ryanlawrence9010 it depends who you ask lmao. there's far more grey in this world than black or white

what do the consuls have to do with monarchy? theyre voted in by the senate, and theyre in office for only 1 year.
My kitty named Cicero. Eats Mango.
If you were in Russia, would you use English translations for the names of the various American presidents? It’s just distracting.
Good, but why does he pronounce Cicero (Sis-a-row) as (key-ca-row). No one else does that. Funny...hummmm... Thanks

Isn't his named pronounced Chee-Che-Rho?
Walter Johnson that's bugged me is this Marcus cicero?

"Kikero"??? Don't you mean "Sisero"?
"kikero" sounds so pretentious.

And actually Cicero's name derived from the word 'cicer' which means 'chickpea'
