  • Ever seen a super short freight train out on the mainline and wondered what it was? Chances are it was a local freight! This video goes over what local freights do, why they're used, and how they work.

I’ve heard about the Dog Food Local down in the Oklahoma City Area and I think it’s BNSF. Thanks! 👍

as far as road assignments go, they are divided into 3 classes... road switcher, way freight, through freight (ranked from highest to lowest rate of pay)... way freights and through freights are paid by the mile... 100 miles = a basic day (when using a 12.5 overtime or mph divisor... whichever you want to call it)... so the road pay formula is, miles/mph = x (100/12.5 = 8.00... that's how long crews would have to work before overtime starts on a 100 mile run)... same formula applies to longer runs, just plug in the appropriate numbers, but any runs OVER 100 miles and your overtime starts beyond 8 hrs on duty... way freights and through freights also qualify for extra payments to the crews called arbitraries... these are additional payments crews get when certain working conditions are met... typically these would be *terminal delay*, *switching time* and *held away pay*... also, through freight crews can get bumped up to way freight rate if their days work includes four or more station stops... now, road switchers are different as they are a combination yard/road assignment... road switchers are paid at the 5-day yard rate, which is nice as yard rate is one of the highest pay rates (certainly higher than way freight and through freight rate)... also, road switchers can perform yard work like flat switching/classification work but they don't get any extra compensation for it because they are already being paid at the higher yard rate (way freights and through freights WOULD get extra compensation if they were to perform and switching/classification work)... road switchers can also go in and out of the yard MULTIPLE TIMES, but once again receive no extra compensation for doing so... some agreements allow extra payment to way freight and through freight crews if they were to go out of the yard multiple times

I find local freights to be the most entertaining. There are a couple customers near my house but i know the number is dwindling unfortunately

Would a long distance train (100+ miles) that has 1 or 2 customers still be considered a local?
