"Smile" is kinda special in Band-Maids discography. The music was written by Kentaro Akutsu - the writer of "Thrill". It was released as a B-Side to the single release of "Bubble" (you have heard that one) in 2019. So, released at a time when they wrote all their stuff themselves. Kentaro Akutsu was one of the writers on their first mini-albums, so one of the "label provided" writers - as most (newer) fans see it today. However Band-Maid back then picked the songs themselves, without looking up the writers beforehand, worked with them to adjust them further. They did say in interviews, that they actually enjoyed working with the outside writers and learned A LOT from them, saying they would collaborate with some of them again, if the opportunity is there... So after a couple years they worked with the "Thrill" writer again. They asked him to do a song for them (not the other way!). He wrote the music for "Smile", without any guidelines or style requests from the band, the acoustic version however is modified (d'uh) by the band.
The lyrics on "Smile" are by Miku. It's actually the first time she wrote something personal. It's her first love letter to the band-maid fans. She normally doesn't write about herself or about her own experiences. "Smile" addresses the Band-Maid fans directly. "Your smile makes me happy", "It's a special view" (-> from the scene) etc.
You have seen their online shows, you've seen how *lost* they look during the first 1 or 2 songs. They are still very nervous before every live show, MISA still takes a couple shots before going on stage; there is a good short BTS video on their fan-club - all of them are nervous, Miku kinda tries to hide it, the rest not so much. If you however look on fan-cams, they go onstage, don't really address the audience at first, all face Akane basically - they start, turn around, see the happy faces of the audience and go 100% in a second
The second lyrically very personal song is "About Us". Released during the covid19 pandemic - the second direct love letter to the fans.
Wow what a great comment. Thank you for taking the time to let us know all of this stuff. I really appreciate it,
Many Thanks for this comment. I know a lot about them, but there is still much I don't know. It is a pity, that many things still on the official fan-club side is only in Japanese. As a German I would be happy to have comments in English.
I agree! The sound recording is excellent, and Saiki's singing is one of her best, imo.
This became my #1 fav acoustic song of Band-Maid😍
Kanami was vibing so hard.
Half smiling you can see her look across to the rest of the band at times.
listening and becoming so entranced by the exquisite sound of the vocal harmonies of Miku, Saiki, soft percussion of Akane and melodic booming of MISA's bass.
Then adding to it with her own sound from her guitar.
SMILE Miku Kobato
It all started with a small dream story
Your flickering reverberating sigh
Looked so quite distant
Meeting and then saying farewell
It’s a loop that keeps on repeating
Accept these feelings welled up until now
Keep the beat
I’ll take you away anytime, shine
Remnants of our moments are intangible
Next, where shall I sing with you?
Your smile makes me happy
I’m right here. It’s a special view
I’m right here. It’s a special view
Off to somewhere far beyond the sky
Can’t stop moving
Can’t stop moving
We are still walking in a dream
Little by little peeking
Into the future we’ve painted
Hesitation and determination
On these faded out pages
Firmly colored out by delivering words
supporting me
There’s always meaning in being here, shine
With this many affections we want to convey
Let’s rendezvous with our renewed selves again
Your smile makes me happy
I’m right here. It’s a special view
I’m right here. It’s a special view
Off to somewhere far beyond the ocean
Even nobodies like us
Can become anything we want
I want to say this right now
However,
This message I can’t properly convey
Forever to remain unsaid
I’ll take you away anytime, shine
Remnants of our moments are intangible
Next, where shall I sing with you?
Your smile makes me happy
There’s always meaning in being here, shine
With this many affection we want to convey
Let’s rendezvous with our renewed selves again
Your smile makes me happy
I’m right here. It’s a special view
I’m right here. It’s a special view
Off to somewhere far beyond everything
Can’t stop moving
Can’t stop moving
It is your smile Saiki that makes me happy!
Band-Maid songs are always top notch quality, kudos my friends.
Man, I love this song! The emotion that Saiki puts into her vocals makes me tear up, and her harmonies with Miku are gorgeous.
I'm pretty sure this is the best recorded vocals by Saiki so far. I have no idea what the lyrics is about, but holy fudge it gives me feelings. Insanely good!
I like her voice in Puzzle acoustic
While the music was written by Kentaro Akutsunot, Smile was composed by Band-Maid including the guitar work and lyrics by Miku. Smile has this beautiful, somewhat haunting aspect with Kanami's continuous background riff, and the way MISA comes in with her powerful, delayed start. But she goes crazy starting the second verse, doesn't she? It's ballsy and I love it. It's weird to me why Smile is rarely played or covered. And it's super weird to me why Band-Maid isn't a million times more popular, too! I must be so out of touch with what people in general find entertaining and moving with their performers and in their music. Thx, Guys!
🤙🏼
@pantera gt8 Bingo 100% correct. But be careful there's some middle aged closet rap fans lurking in the shadows. I said exactly the same thing about a year ago. And was attacked by those you wouldn't think would be into that garbage. Ever since the music and recording industry in my country (America). Realized they could pump the sewage known as Rap out to the masses and into the suburbs. It basically killed a big part of guitar based rock music. Many of us grew up with, from the late 60's to the late 80's.
Could it be that those who aren't listening to Band Maid don't have the mental property to handle artists of this caliber? The bottom line is almost nothing is coming from western countries that's worth the gum stuck to the bottom of a table musically, it's pure garbage, 🗑️ and when you have the Masse's dumbed down to that level 🎚️ you can't expect much. As long as Japanese band's continue on the pathway they are traveling, and without changing 🚼 what western countries are producing will be conquered, no God will save it, total world domination, let this be a warning ⚠️.
So true re popularity. Mainstream cant get their head around the language barrier. If Saiki and Miku sang in English more, the band would be super popular. Hopefully Miku will practice her English. It is hard for them but to break into huge markets like the U.S.,it's mandatory for marketing and getting the message out to the potential market. Miku has the perfect personality for interviews. I can't see the band touring while Covid is raging through their major markets. Australia and NZ are possibilities for sure. Great enough fan base? Let's hope they tour next year. Unfortunately I cant see it happening before 2023 though.
I'll say this till I'm blue in the face ( I am already ). You can lay most of the blame at the feet of. The American music and recording industry. They don't get behind or back guitar based American rock music anymore. Haven't really done so for over 30 yrs. With the exceptions like Metallica and Nickelback. Where in the 70's -80's dozens of those types of bands were in the public eye and being pushed. So they're probably not going to get behind foreign ones. Media and that includes most forms of entertainment. Sometimes create, but set direct and drive all the narritives. If they just got behind Band Maid and gave them a minimal push, they'd be so much bigger than they are now.
I would love to see a Band Maid Unplugged like back in the day with MTV.
Such a beautiful song. You guys are legends. Stay Metal 🖤🦊🤘🏻
Saiki as a little girl would accompany her Mother to the local bar and she would sing Karaoke to have something to do.. She began vocal training at about 14 yo. Was working as a dancer and backing vocalist when she audition for Akane, MISA and Kanami. Band Maid is her first band at 18 yo!! 3 things to watch/hear, Miku's lyrics that she wrote, how good she has become on the guitar and that she is singing and playing the guitar at the same time, NOT easy.
Really like the tune, the vocals are superb, the playing tasteful.
I've been saying Saiki shines on slower songs for a long time. I think the slower softer pace gives her opportunity to concentrate on each note.
My favorite acoustic song by them. Saiki is just so absolutely awesome in this.
Saiki and Miku really killed it on this one. I enjoyed the live stream guys. Keep up the good work. =)
2 : 54 - how proud kanami with miku's guitar proggres, i think (lol)
I even read people saying Kanami would look "bored" in this recording, but that´s complete nonsense. To me it´s also much more a look of real pride, not only for Miku, but also all the others.
@@UltraHD.7 we're on the same page
@@UltraHD.7 Plus, she's probably writing a killer guitar solo in her head for another song at the same time. Yes! She's that good. Hey. It's my dream. I'll think what I want! HaHa!!

A beautiful lyrical song. As always, I saw the pleasure on your faces when listening to metal. Thank you, dear ones, I enjoyed the song with you.
Прекрасная лирическая песня. Как всегда, я видел удовольствие на ваших лицах, когда слушал металл. Спасибо вам, дорогие, мне понравилась песня вместе с вами.
Sooooo Good!
MISA!!! MISA!!! MISA!!!! 🥃🥃🥃
Middle Aged Metal Head finally more Band-Maid :D lol
Miku is showing off her Zemaitis acoustic in this one ;)
also loving the tone of Misa's new old tabacco wall colored bass, it has that thicc deep sound like her black cloud one had.
@eric the studio version isnt an acoustic song.
Who didn't LOVE that?
There's a famous quote variously attributed to Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker 'Cream is a Jazz band, we just didn't tell Eric' , sometimes I believe Misa is thinking the same about Band Maid when she's grooving away
Love Band-Maid acoustic. I agree with you, I think Saiki's vocals are better and I believe it is because they slow the songs down and allow her to sing the notes fully. Miku's back up vocals are really great as well. Thank you for reacting to this video.
For some reason the studio version hit me even harder than this one. It doesn't make sense, but somehow it just does.
At 1:45, I'm waiting for the tears to start flowing (TBH, so I too can shed a tear!) For me, the top story (besides this being a beautiful song): Misa's bass and Saiki's vocals.
He guys! New Band Maid live video!!!Dice&Different we need a reaction :)
"Your smile makes me happy."
Whose smile you might ask? That would be those whom they are performing to in concert and by extension the fans and by even further extention every single person on the planet. While written for them this is the type of world domination small pigeon always references. This band can technically do almost anything well. I seriously believe they could perform a country western song if they had a mind to do so. Which, somewhat thankfully, they don't. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.
Does anyone doubt that they can play any musical genre as masters?
If you can't "Smile" whilst listening to this, then you must be getting your teeth punched in by an elephant....probably :)
🦷💥🐘
An elephant? Not by a gorilla?
🎼🎼🎼♥️💐❤️🙏
You promised me you'd do Anemone.
👍🤘💐🙏
以前は全く興味も無かったけど音楽を良く聴けば改めてこのバンドの底力が少し分かった。
どうしてこれ程人気なのか少し分かった気がする。
I miss Eric... Oldschool Dicodec, we may say...
Pre surgery and post surgery.. huge difference
