you are forgetting heros being spread out to help defending. but ya an eventual merger of these hero pedastles into one "hero barracks" could help a lot especially if it had the defensive fetures on placing heros in the base as patrol
I think the merged defenses came too early as an "needed" option to save space. They could have cut down on other buildings first like collectors or army camps just make the collectors produce faster to compensate and or army camps hold more troops

I think merging major defenses would be a bad idea as it would be too easy to destroy it with earthquake spell and reduce the number of targets. For me, when I plan an attack, I search for every major defense and try to think how I can destroy it either before the main attack or quickly to avoid damage. Having one merged inferno tower would just mean a very strong defense with a lot of HP and only one thing could damage it: earthquake... Also it's a small 2x2 defense, not a 3x3 one.
hidden tesla: no idea inferno tower: agreed wizard tower: three wizards per tower, you get to chose what effects will they cause. fire does simple damage, ice slows them down for less damage, electric chains itself between enemies and poison will attack similar to a head hunter, poisoning the enemies with it's attacks
The thing about merged defenses is that they can also softlock people from completing the achievements. While for the Cannons and Archer Tower it is not an issue, it will become one once we get to the X-Bows and Inferno Towers.
when they merge the mortars, i think itd be fun if they made it so the new mortar physically cant miss, im thinking like it shoots a missile in the air and then it rockets back down so it follows a rough arc like a normal mortar shot, but just doesnt miss
mortars play big support role in my base defense....if four mortar placed evenly to support the centre area and also the edge of base mortars will be busy...when your town hall is threatened there will be two or three mortar raining fire inside base its all placement
I feel that, for the Mortar, they should do the opposite of what they did with the Archer Tower and Cannon, where they took single target towers and made them capable of dealing with swarms. This means taking the Mortar from an AOE tower to a high single damage tower. I actually have 2 different ideas for this: 1. Do something like Clash Royales evolved Mortar where it shoots a barrel of Skeletons or Goblins. This makes it so the spawned units can attack larger units and slowly scale up damage with each launch. This can also help by making it work like the Guard building in the Builder Base, where the spawned units can delay/distract enemy troops. 2. Take a page from the Eagle Artillery and make it a lite version of that, where the projectile can seek (maybe the projectile is a mildly guided rocket) and deals much more damage, but in a smaller AOE. 2a. Maybe this could be something wacky like turning it from a Mortar into a Rocket Launcher, where it deals far more damage, doesn't have a minimum range, but only hits one target at a time for high damage (or just has a reduced AOE). Yes this idea is also partially based on the MOAB mauler upgrade path for the bomb shooter from BTD.
the biggest problem with merged defenses is unless you going on really common defenses like cannons and archer towers, there will be a lack of defenses in general for example: morters will be able to merge only once because there's a max of 4 and one of them is geared up. wizard tower iirc the max is 5 so only 2 merges and then you are left with a 3 towers 4 air defenses 4 Xbows 3 inferno towers and this is not talking about the big bois like eagle artillery and scattershots so what is plentiful enough? bombs probably to mega bombs, spring traps which could be turned to push traps or larger spring traps, skeleton traps that would turn to big boi skeletons and hidden teslas that could do something
I personally play brawlstars, not clash of clans, but I think they are doing probably the best of all supercell games at managing the game to be as good as possible. Clash royale, well, obviously, then hayday and boombeach aren’t managed at all, and then brawlstars although fine still is managed pretty badly recently, but clash of clans is consistent at fixing all their problems and staying fair and enjoyable
While the bases are running out of space, Supercell could fix thix by making the bases bigger just like how they did in December 2015. But I'm guessing they're trying to not have to do that because that would mean attackers would run out of time. In the same update Supercell added 30 extra seconds to attacks to make up for bigger bases but that ended up making attacks for smaller bases too easy. They could give the extra time to the upper Town Hall levels but I'm assuming Supercell wants to keep the time per attack consistent throughout Town Hall levels. Another reason why I think they're making fewer buildings is because they want to have less than 100 buildings so that every building destroyed gives you a percentage of destruction. They might make Hero alters not a structure or could make just one Army Camp instead of four. These are just what I'm thinking they're planning so it could be entirely something else.

No it isn't the des doesn't want it to become to complex. Also less building means more open space for basebuilding. If they whould be forced to increase map size because of to many buildings they need to change attack time, but they doesn't want that or troop speed but that would be a lot of work to balance it out forevery troop.

The problem with this solution is that your are making loot farming difficult and pretty much nerfed. For army camp, yeah, just have like 2 camps.
