Mainwaring despite his shortcomings is a very likeable character. What a great bit of acting. Eccentric leader, green eyed and insecure but his redeeming qualities makes it difficult not to respect him. Brilliant acting and script writing
I first saw this program on Public TV in Houston. I thought is was a great sitcom. Then 40 years later I found in on UA-cam and have watched every available program multiple times. They are all good! It is a shame that only Ian Lavender is the only one of the 6 primary actors remaining.
Gabrielle Hannon blackadder goes forth Only fools and horses Fawlty towers Pure class For all the things the British did wrong Comedy wasn’t one of them
Arthur Lowe was nominated for seven BAFTAs and won one (1973). Of course, he was in movies, but always in supporting roles (as Butler in 'The Ruling Class' and in "The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer'). The Academy Awards have been given since 1929, and the first Oscar ever went to German actor Emil Jannings.
I like the parts when Walker says "the brill cream boys" and "maybe he is the prowler" and the parts when Jones says "hey pikey cheer up boy and don't you move a muscle or you'll get blown to kingdom come" and when he picks up the land mine from the beach and panics saying "don't panic".
One of my favorite episodes of dad's army. I like the funny lines by corporal Jones, and private Walker. This episode is centering on Ian lavender's character private Frank Pike who will be the last surviving cast member. I am out of town right now and in Las Vegas so it's nice to be able to watch this amazing episodes of a great legendary show when I don't have my DVDs of dad's army or my DVD player.
Walker was always my favourite so sad that James Beck died so young he'd be up there with the two Ronnie's Morecambe and wise and other great British entertainers had he lived
While the character Walker wasn't one of the main 3 members of the cast. When he unfortunately died I felt the show started to slowly go down hill. They were never able to find a proper replacement for his character even though they tried. After he was gone the platoon was basically either the Older Men or the Spoiled Pike. He represented the Middle Aged Group and he brought that sense of humor and sarcasm of that group to the show.
Jones "I've never known him like this.' Frazer "He's worried you fool.' Jones 'Why? Has he got trouble at home?' One of the best bits of dialogue in the series.
I don't want to ruin your mood, but removing minefields after the "Invasion of Britain" is terrifying. Even like 20 years after World War Two is over, the engineers still need to comb and inspect the beaches looking for stray minefields. The death tolls of Royal Engineers is enormous, up to 500 killed in year 1943(year 1943 is the year where Britain officially made decision there will be no invasion). Further more casualties until 1950s, some civilians killed as well. In 2004, more than 20 engineers died. The job of Royal Engineer is not just lay minefield, but to record every single minefield for further references. Problem is, some of minefields at the beaches gone due to the sea waves, some might drifted into the sea but some might stuck somewhere on the shore or worse, further in land.
@@genaseidenschwarz2119 Yes, but that's not what I'm trying to say, they made a good show through a sitcom to shows what Great Britain under threat from Invasion. I'm sure Jones was trying to set Mrs. Pike's mind at rest, but I don't think she would be comforted by the thought of her Frank being entangled with a lady follower, especially one who was a bit lustful.

Ian has now passed on to that great big parade ground in the sky.
Sad that isn lavender last of dad's army past away
Some of these actors were actually real war heroes - some of them went through some really hard stuff. Especially Godfrey. Amazing bunch of men.
They gave a great service to their country in the military and in entertainment too.
Golden British comedy. Wonderful. God bless them all.

Ah they did have oscars around then but Lowe never did movies.
Arthur Lowe could have won a bafta award which is the British equivalent of the American Oscars.

Walker was always my favourite so sad that James Beck died so young he'd be up there with the two Ronnie's Morecambe and wise and other great British entertainers had he lived
James beck was responsible for his own death. Given how heavy a drinker he was there’s no surprise he died so young.
Nonetheless unfortunate.
