Hearing that deep voice come out of June... it startled me and then it broke my heart. The forced “babyness” really shows through when you hear her real voice.
I love that the actresses are casted older. It makes June so mature and like she didnt get the chance to be a little girl because of Rose. I think the casting and this revival was just phenomenal.
The portrayal of June is really interesting. In most productions, when it comes to the moment of June blurting out her hatred for the act, most actresses would portray it lividly (which there is nothing wrong with as June is angry that her mother won't let her go further) but Leigh Ann Larkin had so much anger but she held it in, fighting to not let it out. That's what I like about this June. She is screaming inside but she has control over herself.
I adore Leigh Ann Larkin and find her one of the most underrated Broadway performers around. I saw her in both Gypsy and Night Music, and her voice is just stunning. I love how she really plays up June’s bitter frustration in this number too. In addition to finally dropping the mask and letting us see how June really feels about her career, she also injects a ton of humor into the scene. Laura Benanti is a goddess as well, but we all knew that already!
I'd give anything in this world to have a recording of the show I saw. It was the Friday night before the Sunday GYPSY closed. By this time Laura was saying "Smile, baby!" in a faux-LuPone accent like "Smile, baybaaay!" It was hysterical and the best memory ever.
I find it incredibly tragic that these two stayed so alienated from each other in real life... how different things could have been if the two of them had stayed together and supported each other
I really love their relationship, you can tell they really love each other and care for another even through all they've been through. They seem to be each other's rock and are holding each other together throughout the craziness Rose has put them through at such a young age.
Harmonies are fairly simple in all songs in Gypsy as opposed to other Sondheim musicals where harmonies are just SO complex and HELLACIOUS. Like Sweeney Todd. (don't count the movie version at ALL) You have to have a perfect ear and have to be great at HARD harmonies.
Rose did many things and one things she did was have at least 3 birth certificates for each girl, so neither one knew exactly how old they were. (It didn't help that records weren't kept as well as they are now). It was said she eloped at 13 or 14. I think she might have been something like 16 or 17.
Seeing this production from the first row (student rush, baby!), with these two incredible powers just giving it their all right in front of me...wow. Such a great time. They harmonize perfectly.
Its just amazing that sondheim can write fun, silly, lighthearted songs like this, and haunting songs such as My Friends and Pretty Women from Sweeney Todd
@ MichelaSings I think what makes this song truly amazing(beside the harmonies) is than it only appears to be fun and silly. It's the first time we see how they really feel; how they interact as siblings. Brilliant craftsmanship.
I saw Sound of Music in Painters Mill Music Fair in Baltimore County when I was a child, theater in the round. And I am pretty sure Maria was played by June Havoc! I wonder how I'd find out. That was a thrill, to see live musical theater. Now Painters Mill Music Fair is a service center for Toyota!
@RealEyesRealise no way, june is practically a grown woman here. at least 18 the poor thing has badly bleach blonde hair and cant take it. having a mother like mama rose, trying to keep you young, would make you grow old and bitter pretty fast. leigh is BRILLIANT
My problem is you can't view any musical theatre video on here without some misinformed person mentioning something about Wicked, as if that is the one thing that everything else must compare to. Gypsy has been around for almost 40 years longer than Wicked. I don't have a problem with either show, but there's honestly no comparison.
Do you have the full show? I clicked the link and it seems like you do, but all of the posts are from five years ago. I was wondering if you still have it and are willing to trade or upload it. Thanks!
You know what, I think it is a fair comparison I don't know why people get so on their high horse. Its interesting to find how things kinda sorta relate to other things...OF COURSE Gypsy is a classic show and Wicked is relatively young as shows go, but still there are certainly similarities between the character of Glinda and the character of Baby June and the characters of the young Elphaba and the young Gypsy Rose Lee.I found your comment interesting.
@fiddleriddler I agree that the harmonies are great .... but ... Idk about them being better .... saw the 2003 revival cast in person ... loved them. Also ... do you know what else Leigh Ann Larkin has been in?? Thanks
@Sharpay291 Not to be rude but ... Are you crazy?? Did you watch when it was close up on her in the start of the scene?? She is acting the crap out of her little monolouge bit
I'm not sure why you're getting so many likes. You're being really rude to this person for no reason whatsoever. Their comparison was completely logical and not just "I LEIK WIKED". Get over it, Wicked's a great show with a large following. It will be mentioned. Get. Over. It. Don't lash out at someone for no reason.
A Major. 3 sharps. Get the FreeTuner app to get the note and you can figure this stuff out pretty easily just by listening and distinguishing between the 3 major notes of the key: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chord_(music)
While I do admit I was a bit unnecessarily hostile (I stumbled across this today and honestly don't remember replying to it), I do stand by the comment that Wicked seems to be thrown around a lot whenever someone wants to seem like a true musical theatre "fan". I think of it in the same vein as people commenting on videos of musical theatre songs that were featured on Glee. They have no other frame of reference other than that one show and usually don't venture to discover where it came from.
@LaCageAuxGypsy yes in real life true, however remember in real life as well, mama rose put a gun up to tulsa's head and pulled the trigger which doesnt happen in the show obviously.. the gun was on safety, thus june and tulsa running away. the show is a stretch, and june and louise are practically grown up.
It has nothing to do with snobbery. But we all know that every few years, shows come around that seem to become THE show that you MUST like if you like or participate in musical theatre. And honestly, those are the musicals that I end up not really wanting to have anything to do with, after hearing someone mention it for the millionth time, even on videos that it has nothing to do with. There are other things out there that people can enjoy. Why does everything have to be like Wicked?
don't get too mad, melinaemilymay is probably trying to relate this to Wicked because it's the only musical she knows, other then High School Musical, stumbling upon this video when she was trying to finger out who the heck Mama Rose is. She's obviously just a poor beginner ignorant musical theateren', as jesus says "Forgive them, for they know not what they do"
There is big a difference between selling your 'detached' character and just being a detached actress. Obviously June is 'over it'. Thank you for pointing out the obvious. I only made that comment because I've now seen her in 2 completely different roles where I've felt she was detached.
Laura deserved a Tony nomination. This is the best part of the show because Patti is not in the scene--she is loud and vulgar and steamrolls over everyone else.
I saw this production on Broadway and I was not impressed with Leigh Ann Larkin. I most recently saw her again in A Little Night Music and I felt the same detached character when I saw her in Gypsy 2 years before.
This is a really different performance and that vibrato is horrible in a good way kind of. The song isnt that good ti begin with. June is really bitter in this take.l and it's an interesting direction.
this person had guts filming a production with patti lupone in
well, the video of the entire show is on the Liza Minnelli UA-cam channel for some reason
I like Randy and Patti's version better! ua-cam.com/video/5AoY6RRfMZM/v-deo.html
@@shana7672 Wait, where is it? Would love to see it

Peter Toto Saw this opening night. I agree! It was phenomenal!!
CAST not "casted."

I imagine June is also exhausted - of everything.
More like the real person honestly
Laura's, "smile baby" is one of the best things ever!!
here for the vibrato
Word.
I love how throaty they get on the "Maaaa-MA!" Sooo gorgeous.
I adore Leigh Ann Larkin and find her one of the most underrated Broadway performers around. I saw her in both Gypsy and Night Music, and her voice is just stunning. Laura and Leigh are a great pair.
I find it incredibly tragic that these two stayed so alienated from each other in real life... how different things could have been if the two of them had stayed together and supported each other
What happened?
Are you talking about the real life sisters June Hovic and Gypsy Rose Lee or the actresses portraying them in this production of Gypsy?
they're talking about the real-life sisters, June and Gypsy Rose @@jameshamilton8245
I am obsessed with Leigh Ann Larkin’s June. The choices she makes are hysterical but filled with anger and depth.
I really love their relationship, you can tell they really love each other and care for another even through all they've been through. They seem to be each other's rock and are holding each other together throughout the craziness Rose has put them through at such a young age.
Yeah, Louise being pushed aside for her sister by her mother whom embarrasses the life out of her making her play a two-year-old.
+Fox Teen Yep. It's sad.
At least June got away though, thinking "I've had enough! Mr. Grantziger was my biggest chance to be an actress. I'm leaving."
this bitter angry June works so well and Leigh Ann was amazing at it, as well as her Petra
The harmonies are SO great!

You probably know this, but Sondheim didn’t write the music or harmonies for Gypsy, “only” the lyrics.
Rose did many things and one things she did was have at least 3 birth certificates for each girl, so neither one knew exactly how old they were. (It didn't help that records weren't kept as well as they are now). It was said she eloped at 13 or 14. I think she might have been something like 16 or 17.
Leigh Ann Larkin's belt drives me to tears!!!!
The drama in this scene is amazing.

oh my god Leigh Ann Larkin's vibrato s to die for!
Its just amazing that sondheim can write fun, silly, lighthearted songs like this, and haunting songs such as My Friends and Pretty Women from Sweeney Todd
Leigh Ann Larkin’s voice is a powerhouse. Absolutely incredible belting. So effortless
the best production of gypsy!!
The harmonies are fantastic!
I am so obsessed with how they are both feeding off each other’s energy.
Louise : "I'll gladly support you!"
June *looks at her sister in disbelief*
June : "And I'll gladly *give you AWAY!"*
this is the best performance of this song I've seen
@ MichelaSings I think what makes this song truly amazing(beside the harmonies) is than it only appears to be fun and silly. It's the first time we see how they really feel; how they interact as siblings. Brilliant craftsmanship.
June has an amazing voice! omfg
Goosebumps all over
Loved this production of gypsy
"Without much success" is unique
Damn! Leigh Ann can freaking belt!
Their harmonies Oh My God Amazing!
One of the best songs in the show.
This is the best version with older actresses and i love their competing vibrattos. It sounds nasty but in the best way. Idk

It doesn't just have the song. It has the dialogue before the song. But I'm not complaining! XD
Vibrato

Who had the top note,Laura or Leigh Anne?
Leigh Anne had the higher harmony

Lots of coughing out there!
In every "Oh Mama", Laura (is that the blonde one?) was sharp. But on the last one, she was fine.
I sense some musical theatre snobbery...
June looks a little angry...
Except for Bernadette. I am firmly convinced she is the best Gypsy

Because a Mama Rose that's soft and tasteful and politely lets other people upstage her would be....... a correct interpretation?
