The song tells the tale of a traveling musician who heads back on the road chasing his dreams. In doing so he leaves behind the woman who loves him. Later on, he starts having second thoughts and returns to her but it isn't long before the urge to roam overtakes him again. ZBB fiddle player Jimmy De Martini told The Orange County Register: "It's more of a ballad, but it gets really big towards the end. It's about the life that we live now - leaving loved ones to be gone on the road, and (how) some people have trouble holding on to relationships and some people miss being home. It kind of goes through what a musician and traveling person goes through. It's one of my favorites."
This lady is correct! Not really a toxic relationship but about the life of man who travels for a living. In this case a musician but it could be a trucker or military man or anyone who must leave his love for a time.
The studio version of this song features the entire band and backing harmonies that are phenomenal. I love Zac's vocals in this setting, but for your own pleasure, check the original version out as well. Zac Brown Band is a fun rabbit hole to go down; great songs such as "Chicken Fried" (which you've heard), "Toes", "Highway 40 Ride" (so sad), and "Free/Into the Mystic" (my favorite).
This song was written by Zac Brown and a couple of buddies, and it is terrific. The line "I can smell your perfume through these whispering pines" is one of the greatest lyrics I've heard in a long time. The Zac Brown Band is amazing, so why you chose a video with Zac singing solo is a mystery. Regardless, you're a very intelligent lady and I love your reactions, so keep 'em coming and have a great week.
I’ve always felt this song is a kind of ‘re-telling’ of the song “Please Come to Boston” by Dave Loggins which is definitely worth a listen if you haven’t already (I can’t remember you listening to that one). I think sometimes people just fall in love but don’t share the same ambitions or desires. I feel like the man in this song travels to either follow a dream or for work & she is comfortable at home. Funny how we never question why doesn’t she go with him - the world needs wanderers too and there’s no reason they have to go alone, right?
This solo version is poetic, as you insightfully note. The official version is fuller with piano and harmonies, and is highly relatable to those of us who've lived a business life on the road, with that rambling urge to leave and then come back.
I have to mention the acoustic version of this is amazing! This is the first time I have heard/seen it. Unbelievable! So good! Dig into the Zac Brown Band rabbit hole!
Watch this song performed at Redrocks! The band is amazing! Give "Sweet Annie" a listen from the same live performance at Redrocks. You won't be disappointed!!
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Just beautiful 😍 Really like to see your reaction to Th Zac Brown Band Live from Austin City Limits Song is 🎵FREE/INTO THE MYSTIC 🎵 Your gonna adore this one 💖 Keep the good work Sunshine 🌞 👏✌️👍🏼👌
Love this reaction. As the female I can see your reaction is authentic but I want to tell you that the man that keeps getting taken away by his talent and going on the road and singing every time he goes he wants to be back home with his woman. It’s a battle. And that’s what this song is about.
This song is so amazing...it really is so very poetic and really tells the story of a musician and the conflicts of the heart that we all fall victim to at some point in time. Great reaction.
You ever hear? I love shock brown by and byotherwise. I've sent my concert twice , but i've ever heard of a brother called dave rather dave logan's question mark
Real life ain't full of happy endings. Zac can paint great pictures in your mind. Zac does this and it feels SO COLD, but then "Toes in the Water" feels exactly like a Florida cabana. In that early line, it would've been so EASY to use "away" to rhyme with "stay". But instead he chose "window pane". Verse 1 is near Colorado, Verse 2 he's driven up to Lincoln, Nebraska. "Night as black as the coffee he was drinking"? Amazing line. Is this a story of winter depression? Or just the life of a truck driver? He has another song about the trucker life - "Highway 20 Ride". Worth a listen. "Colder Weather" could be about a widower, driving the roads, but nobody can overcome the memory of his lost love.
This song has always felt to me like it was written by a man that understands that he will always be a wanderer. At the same time he understands the heartbreak he leaves behind him every time he leaves.
This man is very talented and a great songwriter He also has a great voice Country Music is stories about people’s lives His song writing in this song is very deep This man has many great songs that is so relatable to people This is what I love about country music Country Music and Blues music came from gospel music
Zac barely participated in writing this song. It was Wyatt Durrette and Levi Lowrey. They brought it to the band and they made some slight alterations.
As good as this live acoustic version is, you've got to listen to the album version. The harmonies of the full band make this song an absolute masterpiece.
This song gets me! I moved to Colorado to be with my then boyfriend..then he started taking jobs other places. We broke up because I was so lonely. I'm super glad to be in Colorado though! I'll always love his gypsy soul.
Since you're a 70s girl at heart, you should check out the song "Fire" by Ohio Players. I'm sure you'll love it. It's another one of those awesome songs from the 70s . I guarantee you won't be able to keep from getting on your feet to dance to it once it gets started. You'll also love the style of the band with the clothes (matching outfits), hair styles, and choreography. They really knew how to rock it - a lot of great attitude! Super fun song!🔥
A situationship! ❤ 😂 😮 😢 ❤ That is the best description of a "come here, go away" relationship I have ever heard! Was not expecting that, but I feel like I've just been in therapy. If you know, you know.
Toby Keith's Cryin' For Me is a song he wrote for his friend Wayman Tisdale. you should check it out. Then for one of the funnest live bands ever check out The Mavericks, Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down, Live in Austin Tx
While most modern country can't compare to the legends before we have songwriting and performing by Zac,Stapleton,Johnson and Krauss that is 2nd to none so cool young people like you appreciate it
This song is SOO much better with the full band. There's videos of the writer of this song singing it. He had an additional verse that Zac Brown cut out for some reason.
I take it as a trucker that don't know how to settle down. But she also falls for the ramblin man. Somewhat like Desperado by the Eagles. The one that got away.
OMG you just posted this today. I've been thinking about checking you out and I think this might be the first time I did. The words don't necessarily lead to me to double suicide, but the official video that you haven't seen does. In the official video we see her kill herself and then the singer talks about being with her ghost and he can't wait to see her again. I agree with other commenters. You need to see the official video and hear it by the full band.
You have to react again to the full band. You stumbled upon Zac doing the song by himself. You also have to see the official video. So much is revealed there.
Most of us move on from relationships, even if we really care about the person, when we are trying to find the path we want to be on. Sometimes it's nobody's fault. It's not like the song says he lied to her. As someone else said it actually is similar to the song Please Come to Boston. (Another terrific song BTW)
🌷🌷🌷 .. very cool song & honest reaction I recommend you watch an official video with the band , or a live version of one of their hits with the entire band. All of thee members of his band are top notch .. special nod to the "fiddle" player. They are also excellent harmony singers, which makes them one of the best Country Music bands out there. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
I watched the video, I only got one thing from this song, he froze to death and she died in a fire. I am so happy I got another perspective on this song. I think I like it now.
You will be told the next songs you should hear are Chicken Fried and Toes and while these are great songs its the lesser played tracks that are really amazing first for me would be Cold Hearted the story and the harmonies are stellar! Also you will love Free/Into the Mystic with the violin intro.... and Highway 40 Ride! Its great you are getting some ZBB in your life!
Need to hear the full band, the harmonies are amazing.
Agreed..this is good but the harmonies is what makes Zac Brown Band so epic
I was about to post the same thing, until I saw this post.
Agreed! Not the same without the harmonies for sure!!

Yes, but I think "colder weather" can also be seen as a metaphor for his mental state as well.
Another one that just let's you sit in a warm melancholy is "Highway 20 Ride" for the Dad's out there living without their kids.
Pairs nicely with "The Loadout" from Last Week!

This is the perfect comment you will love the harmonies on the full band version.... his first 2 albums are exceptional!
Highway 20 ride, but yes, an amazing song
Wonderful song. A great band. The harmonies in the studio version are awesome.
“Good bye in her eyes” is amazing
And "Sweet Annie".
Hwy 20 ride is great too
I agree both are great
This is a pared down version of this song. Please listen to the studio version as well.

I grew up in the 60s and when I first heard this, I was convinced it was a James Taylor song that I had not heard before. Poetic for sure, Britt.
I’ve always felt this song is a kind of ‘re-telling’ of the song “Please Come to Boston” by Dave Loggins which is definitely worth a listen if you haven’t already (I can’t remember you listening to that one). Yesssss Zac brown is an epic guitarist and lyricist

🎼 Can you pay my bills, can you pay my telephone bills…🎼 Zac Brown Band is incredible live! This is one of my favorites. Thanks for the reaction ✌🏼

Your gonna adore this one 💖

👏✌️👍🏼👌
I love this acappella version but the instrumental version is a little more fun to listen to. He is a talented musician.
Acoustic, not a capella.
I really love their song "Free" too. Also "Highway 20 Ride"
I loved highway 20 ride with my ex and that song gut punches me.. it's so beautiful
Love this reaction. As the female I can see your reaction is authentic but I want to tell you that the man that keeps getting taken away by his talent and going on the road and singing every time he goes he wants to be back home with his woman. It’s a battle. And that’s what this song is about.
Home Free brings this song to an incredible level of beauty!
I think Home Free 's version is better!!!
This song is so amazing...it really is so very poetic and really tells the story of a musician and the conflicts of the heart that we all fall victim to at some point in time. Great reaction.
The music in the full band version just adds to it.
Your “facial expressions” are “gold” Britt! It’s like the light is literally turning on in your head when you’re hearing it! 👍😘💕
Zack has a song with Allen Jackson called, As she's walking away. Great song
“Keep Me in Mind” is one of his best!
Whole song is poetry.. the songwriting is AMAZING
Uh, excellent so much refreshment. Refreshing the code or whether blowing in the door oh yeah okay
You ever hear? I love shock brown by and byotherwise. I've sent my concert twice , but i've ever heard of a brother called dave rather dave logan's question mark
Dave l o g g I n s he does a song code place place come to boston

That's not about a trucker's life and neither is this song
He is such a an amazing artist and storyteller....they have a lot of really great songs: Toes, chicken fried, Free
Absolutely love this band!!
This is a gorgeous song! I think you'll also really enjoy Home Free's cover, they just re-recorded it a couple of months ago with a new music video
Was going to say the same thing!
Beautiful song. Zack Brown is great.
This song has always felt to me like it was written by a man that understands that he will always be a wanderer. At the same time he understands the heartbreak he leaves behind him every time he leaves.
Great reaction Britt!! Home Free did a great cover of this. This is the first time I'm hearing Zac Brown's version.
This man is very talented and a great songwriter He also has a great voice Country Music is stories about people’s lives His song writing in this song is very deep This man has many great songs that is so relatable to people This is what I love about country music Country Music and Blues music came from gospel music
It’s about his Lady who’s passed. Her in her grave talking about him leaving
Great unplugged version ! The studio version with the band has some incredible harmonies.
You're missing out on all the wonderful instruments and harmonies of the music video.
Another amazing show I saw in September in NH.
Gotta do the full band!! Soooo much better. Zac Brown is a great songwriter and this is one of his best imo
Zac barely participated in writing this song. It was Wyatt Durrette and Levi Lowrey. They brought it to the band and they made some slight alterations.
Britt, have to check out Home Free's version of Colder Weather. It's their newest song.
i always thought of him not as a musician but a truck driver out on the road for weeks or months at a time.
Britt, Home Free's version is exceptional. Their harmonies are beyond belief.
As good as this live acoustic version is, you've got to listen to the album version. The harmonies of the full band make this song an absolute masterpiece.
I somewhat feel this way with my current situation. He plays this for me ❤
This song gets me! I moved to Colorado to be with my then boyfriend..then he started taking jobs other places. We broke up because I was so lonely. I'm super glad to be in Colorado though! I'll always love his gypsy soul.
zac brown and ashlyn trying to drive live is one of the best songs ever about the struggles of a relationship
Since you're a 70s girl at heart, you should check out the song "Fire" by Ohio Players. I'm sure you'll love it. It's another one of those awesome songs from the 70s . Added!
Highway 20 ride is a great song
Home Free has an awesome acapella cover of this!
A situationship! ❤ 😂 😮 😢 ❤ That is the best description of a "come here, go away" relationship I have ever heard! Was not expecting that, but I feel like I've just been in therapy. If you know, you know.
Truck drivers feel and deal with this kinda heart ace everyday
You need to hear Home Free's newest cover of this! It'll break your heart!
Home free does an amazing job on this song
Toby Keith's Cryin' For Me is a song he wrote for his friend Wayman Tisdale. you should check it out.
Then for one of the funnest live bands ever check out The Mavericks, Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down, Live in Austin Tx
One of my Truckin favorites about being on the road
While most modern country can't compare to the legends before we have songwriting and performing by Zac,Stapleton,Johnson and Krauss that is 2nd to none so cool young people like you appreciate it
The video has Liam helmsworth in it. You should check out "chicken fried" as well.
Great song
I don’t really like country music but I went out of my way to see ZBB live. They were perfect live. Must see if you get the chance to 🙏
Highway 20 Ride, Goodbye in her Eyes, and Keep Me in Mind are all great too!
Lances Song is another great story by Zac. Its about one of the band members best friend who died in a car crash
You really need to listen to the the recorded version. They musicianship is amazing and adds so much to the feel of the song.
zac brown and ashlyn trying to drive

Glad you’re back.
Glad you’re back!!

Love this song !! I hit like before you even got started. Lol
He has such an amazing voice!! Check out his song “Highway 20 Ride” …just beautiful!
If you enjoyed this one, you'd probably really like "Free/Into the Mystic" and "Highway 20 Ride"....

Another fantastic poetic song is Better as a Memory by Kenny Chesney. One of my favorites
He is a native Georgian as well
This is a Great song!
Home free does a great version of this song
Oh, and the song is Bills, Bills, Bills, Destiny's Child
Live at the red rocks is the best version of this song
Zac has a way with words. You should check out “I’ll be Your Man.”
The video is amazing as well...
You should also check out Zac Brown Band doing Gin and Juice.🙌
Destinys Child, bills... that's a 90's joint right there.. lmao😂😂
Listen to Highway 20 Ride. Same artist. Breaks my heart. Will break your heart. Makes me think of my boys every time I have to leave for work.
You have to react again to the full band. You stumbled upon Zac doing the song by himself. You also have to see the official video. So much is revealed there.
You have to listen to Zac Brown play "Devil went down to Georgia on the acoustic guitar"
Their song Over Night is great

Sweet Annie!
lmao at the blue tongue part, i noticed it like 2 seconds before you said something.
It’s funny you took it that way I always took as a man who worked on the road.
Zach is an amazing singer/songwriter! Do you get the metaphor, Britt?
The acoustic is beautiful but you should see the video, i love the poetry
Love
Your reactions and you’re such a pretty girl…
Nashvilley 💀 Stay awesome, Britt
Need to check out Highway 20 ride and As she’s walking away.
The song is about a singer who is torn between performing and he's home life
I’m a truck driver & I have a gypsy soul. I can’t ever stay in one place to long. Just can’t.
