I love that, Dave - raised up and laid down at the same time... that's that signature PTX arrangement that we love so much. Gentle beginning, climbing up to that crescendo, dropping off a cliff and then laid gently back down. Such a ride. Kirstie shines so bright in this one, as does Kevin's cello. It's just magical what they can deliver. 💜💛💚💙❤
This is my favorite PTX song. I love how they did this. I love Kevin on the cello As well as singing and beat boxing. Just beautiful.
This is beautiful. I liked the original but this is transcendent. An interesting note is they were trying to look like an old fashioned photograph, so tried to stay very still. This is a near impossibility for Scott who sings with his hands…a lot! Notice his death grip on the chair 😄

This is one of my favorites with Kirsten! I also love how they have Kevin gently come in at the end just after he masterfully cello boxes. The choices they make are perfection.

Such a heartfelt performance, highlighted by Avi pushing into the final stretch, and Kevin's coda to it all. Polyphony: in the style of simultaneously combining a number of parts, each forming an individual melody and harmonizing with each other = PTX. You would appreciate the "Recording of Evergreen". The work and choices that are made for the smallest details of a song is revelatory.

Haha, not far in the video but smiled a bit when you said the sound is kind of like they're married. Because they have likened being in a group to being in a 5 way marriage. Loooots of compromises and communication, haha.
Now watched more. What I love with this is they manage to convey different stages of emotions in this through their music. The panicked almost desperate yelling of "please hear me, say something", the totally worn out and empty almost whisper with nothing behind. They manage to make the emotional stages show up in sound. Beautiful!

I really enjoy listening to these performance again with your reactions. I go in thinking I have heard all the amazingness, but you seem to always find me something I haven't fully appreciated before. Another reactor recently reacted to Superfruit's "Happy Little Pill" cover, which should be more on top of mind for me than it is, it is so beautiful. It reminded me, and I think you'd really like it.
I'll second that. Mitch and Scott do such beautiful harmonies in that.

The whole thing is great, but I love that little part where it's just Scott & Avi. You don't get to hear the 2 of them in perfect harmony very often.

I just love watching your reactions Dave! You know how to listen to music correctly, experience it with your whole body and your whole soul. This cover always brings me to tears. Partly the haunting lyrics, partly the thoughts associated with the lyrics. And of course because it's Pentatonix. But this is, to me, one of their most somber and heavy covers they have done. Everyone so still and quiet. Everyone subdued and sorrowful. It just hits different, you know? I can't wait until you get in to holiday Pentatonix.

I love love love love love love this rendition that they did! Makes me want to cry every time! There is a great rendition of the song seasons of Love, it is a live performance that they did on the 4th of July. It is incredible! Highly recommend you check it out!

Fun fact: Because Scott tends to move his hands a lot when singing, they made him hold onto the two chairs. Even still, if you watch closely, you can see him move his elbows slightly... He just can't help himself! 😅 😅

This is the song that made me fall in love with Kirstie's voice. For anyone who has ever been in a relationship that cannot be saved, she completely captures the hopelessness and heartache in that situation. I LOVE this one - if you want another really good Kirstin one you should definitely do Rather Be! It's super boppy and fun
My favorite part of this arrangement is that from the deconstructed harmony breakdown out....there is no bass except the subtle notes from Beyonce (KOs cello) therefore under Kirstie's beautiful powerful lead we get to hear PTX's rare 3 part harmony of just bass, baritone, tenor. When Avi or Matt get to sing harmony it just makes me happy because that richness is so satisfying lol! Plus....lets all agree we love to hear the trio but when the bass/perc give us their voices too it's soul melting in the best way!!!

I didn’t love the original version of this song and didn’t listen to the PTX version for way too long and I’m still mad at myself for it. My jaw hit the floor and stayed there when they dropped everyone out and built the chords back one by one and then hit us with Kirstie in the final crescendo. Absolutely stunning arrangement and performance.
The original is by A Great Big World. Christina Aguilera heard it and wanted to sing it with them. There is a version without her on their album Is There Anybody Out There? (2014).
