  • My How To video of how I have replaced the troublesum ridgid oil return pipe for a felxible one to my 06 BMW F650GS Dakar motorcycle.
    I am preping my bike for a long UK to Mongolia and back trip and though it wise to pre do this should I have any of the common water pump issues with the bike.
    The way I have done it in the video using an oil / petrol pipe with hose clamps is about the cheapest way to do this modification and the full credit for it has to go to an ADVrider.com forum user called 'Gravel Seeker.' He can be found here -

    That OEM oil return pipe is one of the worst design choices on the bike..Water pump replacements should now be less stressful,might do this,Great tutorial...

      What makes it so? Why was that a bad choice by Rotax? I’m trying to understand what problem is being solved here.

      @@posterestantejames The position of the pipe blocks access to the removal of the clutch plate cover.. Also the pipe itself can be tricky to remove or displace..

    When you changed your clutch plates, did you keep them and would that be something you would take as spares on your trip

    Hi Phil, nice job. I wonder though - can the flexible pipe be routed further from the exhaust pipes? Like closer to the middle of the bike - other side of the clutch cover like the original was? Because I'm not quite decided whether to heat wrap my pipes and I'm afraid it might burn the rubber hose quite a bit. Thanks ! Wish you a safe trip.

    Why do you keep the top metal pipe bracket? Can you not just use a pipe all the way up to the tank?

      maybe for a more secure fixing point at the top, but it could work with flex pipe all the way up i guess.

    Excellent guidance, I've done my clutch plates and just ordered the parts in to do the pipe mod (and the pump assembly), I'm not sure doubling up on the hose clamps is necessary, I read that it's not a pressure issue, if anything it'll be a temperature issue. I'm also prepping for a trip out East to Mongolia continuing the rest of the way around. Mines a standard 2002 GS (single spark) but I've installed a later set of forks and a Dakar rear shock (though the centre stand is a bit short now so need to mod that as well). When are you planning on heading off? How far have you got with your prep?

      Hi, thanks for your comment. My thinking with the 2 clamps was not because of pressure but to make sute that if the first one didnt get a perfect seal the second one would catch any last drips! Whether it works like that or not. Well I was planning to of been heading off the end of April, BUT well you know!! Planning wise the bike and equipment is ready, I had a very basic low info route and I was just about to do the final steps to get a Russian visa and all the boarders started to close. Thats all the prep I had really done and i was going to wing the rest. I dont think this will be over any time soon and then we are heading in to the wrong seasons in places so i guess its on hold for a year. What was your plans? and what are your new plans?

      @@PhilJC Hi, no worries. Yes, it’s better to be safe than sorry and I’m sure it’ll work well. Such a shame that none of us are able to head off as planned but it won’t last forever. Good idea to have flexible plans on the actual trip itself if you have the time, it’ll feel so much more like a proper adventure that way. My original plan was to be off at the beginning of April but for lots of reasons, not least Covid, I had to delay again! My original, original plan was to go last year, but, long story short, the fates did not work in my favour. Needless to say, I’ve become much more philosophical about it now. I’ve calculated that the first of July would be the very latest date I could leave for the seasons to still line up ok around the world but there’s always going to be somewhere the climate interferes (the monsoons around the Himalayas mainly). My realistic new plan is to head off early April next year but it’ll remain flexible now. Whatever happens have a safe journey when you finally get to it.
