My Top Three are Barry Greene (for concept), Tim Lerch (for tone) and Jonathan Stout (for originality). I watched this video twice and I must say that all of the performers are world class. I did not want to watch it a third time because I would probably have to change my mind...
Thanks for making this possible, Chase Maddox! 👏

Around 2011 I attended a Tommy Emmanuel concert at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville. Barry Greene was the guest guitarist. OMG, Barry Greene’s playing is just incredible. He played a few Django pieces with Tommy which were surreal. If you have the chance to hear Barry go do it, he’s a phenomenal musician.

This is one of the best formats on UA-cam. Many UA-cam channels do a horrible thing called pattern interrupts where they do annoying things throughout the video and make cheesy distracting jokes to increase viewer confusion and thus retention. Conversely this was a normal straightforward way to organize a video and I appreciate that.

Max Light's chord sequence at 41:47 to 41:50 is the most beautiful portion of all players. Graham Dechter was a wild and fun ride! However, I think I appreciated the flow and tone of Tim Lerch the most. That being said, all were enjoyable and represent the best of jazz! Thank you for sharing this with us, Chase!

I loved the performances. I have a good friend/musician/teacher friend of mine. I sent him this video: He replied Cannonball Adderley version of Autumn Leaves called “Somethin ELSE”. While I am familiar with Cannonball I had never heard this version. Now, Cannonball is a saxophonist but well take a listen and you will see why Roger Boykin recommended I listen to Cannon. As a musician we are all inspired by others. When I listened to Cannonball, It really is something”Somethin ELSE”.

I love that Cannonball version! I meant guitar versions of “Autumn Leaves”. Hank Garland has a version, which has cool elements, but stays very close to the way most people play it.

Wow I completely enjoyed this compilation of talent and ideas for interpretation! I wish more would have been said about the rigs and how the various tones were achieved; Tim Lerch get my vote for most gorgeous clean tone, and Cecil Alexander for best use of overdrive, his tone harkened back to Wes M. Thanks all!

So much to learn from the depth and variety of approaches and concepts, but if i had to call out anything in particular, it would be the musicality of Cecil Alexander's phrasing - so tasty! ❤

..hey Chase!..i’ve been watching your videos from the background for awhile now man, did a few years at Berklee many moons ago, a lot of rock and blues playing since and doing a lot of self learning for the last five years or so using all the resources that were not available to folks in the 1970s and 80s..
This idea of a bunch of super players doing their thing on a given song is one of the best I’ve seen on YT yet and I’m fairly familiar with all the other people sharing strong content like Jens, Nathan Borton, guys teaching Barry Harris concepts etc..
..last thought..the sound of Tim Lerch is incredible with those Charlie Christian pickups..Fender!
Thanks for doing this..i hope you continue this type of viewpoint in the future..Victor in NY

    Which performance was your favorite?
All these guys are from another more advanced musical planet, but the last dude was unbelievable. Cecil Alexander. The first thing was that he started with a guitar trio setting with a deep groove. I was sold at that point. Really laying back with tasteful statements interposed with great runs. Subtle references to Miles Davis. Then some kind of Motown soulful licks a little tweaked to fit nicely in the standard. That was more than enough! But then he kept getting more complex, but all in the groove. I've never heard anything like it. It's actually kind of exciting and scary that somebody can do this seemingly so effortlessly. (I think I now have enough evidence to stop playing myself.)

John Storie, a little shout out for your Fender D'Aquisto Elite! I purchased one (Antique Burst?) in the mid 1980's. (~$700) Great sounding guitar acoustically and through any amp. Also nice to play bigger chord stretches with the shorter scale. Eventually passed it along to my son. Jazz On!

I really enjoyed this, not only was the playing and improvising great, the philosophies that all these players have about music, was valuable, and insightful for me, and the differences in sound, approach, etc, gave me a well rounded listen.
